One of the most hilarious albums I've ever heard, and at the same time a cutting satire of love in the modern age, a collection of wonderfully arranged psychedelic folk songs with beautiful melodies, and the best album of 2015. I am willing to bet this will become one of the iconic albums of our era. Don't be surprised when this shows up on lists of both the best of 2015 and, eventually, the best of the 2010s. |

Lucinda Williams Car Wheels on a Gravel Road |
An absolute masterpiece of American roots music. Lucinda Williams seamlessly blends country, folk, rock, and a bit of blues to create a beautiful paean to love and home and desire. The stories she tells convey real emotion, and you can tell she is feeling every moment, from the palpable longing of "Right In Time" to the gorgeous escapist journey of "Jackson". Even if you're not from the South, this album can make you feel like you've lived there forever. It's that powerful. |

Wednesday Rat Saw God |
This is exactly the level-up I was hoping for after the already amazing Twin Plagues. Hartzman's lyrics have reached an even greater level of specific and evocative detail in their portrayal of Southern youth, and her vocal delivery is stunning in its level of passion and nuance. The band fires on all cylinders as well from the powerful, punishing highs to the gorgeous subtler moments. This album confirms Wednesday as the best band we have right now. Bootgaze has found its defining statement. |

Acetone Acetone |
Acetone York Blvd. |
Acetone's final album presents an almost classic rock version of the band, with greater energy overall and more pronounced influences from psychedelic and blues rock largely superseding the country flavors that were more pronounced on the band's self-titled album. The album is structured more like a vinyl-era LP as well, with the first half containing relatively tight rock songs and the second half consisting mostly of more drawn-out slowcore tunes. Even more so than its predecessor, York Blvd. is a document of a band in peak form; if their song structures are not always particularly interesting, the band always sound perfectly locked in to each other, Richie Lee and Steve Hadley's rhythm section providing solid foundational grooves with plenty of subtlety that perfectly complement Mark Lightcap's guitar work. There's nothing terribly "heady" about this music but it's hard to complain when it goes down so damn smoothly. Just absolutely lovely stuff - it's an absolute shame things had to end they way they did for these guys. |

I definitely overlooked this last year because this is really awesome stuff. The band's mixture of noisy shoegaze and alt-country fits my taste to a T and Hartzman's lyrics and especially her passionate vocals are to die for. Very consistent
quality across this thing, but it does feel like this could use some more tracks with a tad more oomph to bring the whole thing to the next level. Their covers album from 2022 suggests they're trending toward a more even mix of shoegaze and alt-
country and if the proper follow-up to this album follows that trend we could be in for an even bigger treat next time around. |

Pretty damn good until the last track kills the momentum and almost makes you forget how great the rest of it was. "Boxing Day Blues" just should not have been kept on the track listing. "Kim's Caravan" works so much better as a closing track, and if that were the end the album would still have 10 tracks and be 40 minutes, a totally appropriate album length. Nonetheless, you are missing out if you haven't checked this out yet. |

Edit 3/15: I'm a bit saddened by these low ratings... Nonetheless I'm going to wait for the official release and give it an open-minded shot. I'm guessing that this album is intentionally divisive on Tillman's part and while I know he's not for everyone I still love the shit out of I Love You, Honeybear and I have a feeling I'm going to adore this too. Grouper Cover the Windows and the Walls |
I am familiar with pretty much all of Liz Harris's most popular/significant releases (her unique blending of singer/songwriter and psychedelic folk instrumentation with ambient and drone composition was one of the first forms of ambient music that really clicked with me) so Cover the Windows and the Walls represents one of my first forays into the fringes of her catalogue. This comes after my having finally fallen in love with ambient and drone music in the last couple years, and indeed I'm glad I waited to hear this because I might not have appreciated it as much when I was first getting into Grouper. "Murky" is the first word that comes to mind to describe this music. The echoes of conventional songs are here, but obscured by layers of reverb and feedback such that any conventional song structure is virtually undetectable; this is ambient music through and through. And in that sense it's quite successful, with many gorgeous textures forming the foundation of the music, paired with beautiful and subtle melodies (vocal and instrumental) that drift in and out of focus, urging the listener into a sort of trancelike state. The foundation is well-laid here for the sounds Harris would explore in her next several releases, and this would certainly not be the first Grouper album I'd recommend to anybody who is not decently well-acquainted with ambient music, Cover the Windows and the Walls certainly deserves to be in the conversation as one of Harris's many excellent releases, and makes me even more exited to dig into her other less-heard albums. |

Iron And Wine Light Verse |
My personal experience with Iron and Wine is rather limited considering Sam Beam's massive catalogue, so I was not quite sure what to expect when listening to Light Verse, but what I found, after some careful listening, is a truly excellent folk album composed by a master seemingly near or at the top of his craft (and if this isn't the case, then I have truly done myself a disservice in not exploring more of Beam's discography). Light Verse is a carefully composed, subtly beautiful suite encompassing a range of influences, all anchored by Beam's gorgeous melodies and lyrics. The arrangement of acoustic instruments and textures is simply a pleasure to listen to, especially when it is intertwined with orchestration and progressive song structures as on highlights such as opener "You Never Know," album centerpiece "Taken By Surprise," and the climatic (and cinematic) "Tears That Don't Matter." The mixture of lush chamber folk with melodic indie folk pop and Americana textures (and occasionally structures) and Beam's masterful songwriting is consistently rewarding to bask in, although some moments do not quite land, and many of the best ones may not reveal themselves at first. Given how little I know of the Iron and Wine oeuvre maybe this is all par for the course, but I am certainly surprised it has not received a more enthusiastic reception. Regardless, I am now finally convinced I need to better acquaint myself with Sam Beam's work, because Light Verse is an absolute highlight for me in a year that is already very strong for folk and country/Americana. |

Lucinda Williams Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone |
The 20-track Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone is an immense return to form for Lucinda Williams, her best since her 1998 classic, Car Wheels On a Gravel Road. She drops the murky, plodding atmospheres and improves massively upon the songwriting of much of her other post-Car Wheels work. Disc 1 is definitely the better of the two, and one can't shake the feeling that she could have made a much better album - hell, maybe even another classic - by cutting this in half or doing two albums, but what we are left with is still an excellent album from one of Americana's greats. |
Lucinda Williams Sweet Old World |
An stunning, bittersweet alt-country album with traces of death running through it, Sweet Old World is in many ways Car Wheels On a Gravel Road 1.0, though that appellation is a bit reductive. |

A wonderful, feel-good set of easygoing and uplifting country rock and Americana tunes. Some great tasty guitar playing on display here, and the chorus harmonies give the recording great warmth. Perfect stuff to play when you're feeling a bit down, or when you just want to kick back and relax on a sunny afternoon. |

Huh, I really underrated this before... Gave it a 3 initially. Not on the level of Metamodern Sounds or Sailor's Guide but still a really excellent album. "Life Ain't Fair and the World Is Mean" is badass and "Hero" is a true tearjerker. The backing band is class too. |

Torres Sprinter |
A stunning album that uses its obvious PJ Harvey influence to its advantage. Torres expertly straddles a mix of distorted guitars and quiet atmospherics, all centered around her incredibly meaningful lyrics about aging, alienation, and death. The simplest yet most powerful track here is the closing "The Exchange", in which Torres is backed only by her acoustic guitar, placing her songwriting right in the front. "Mother, father / I'm underwater". Not a happy affair, but one that will reward your attention. |

This is much better than I expected. Every song included here is of course great and the intimacy serves to highlight how at the core of Tweedy's best work is great songwriting and melodies. Some versions try a bit too hard to replicate the originals (for example when Tweedy whistles the violin solo at the end of "Hummingbird") and not every one works ("I Am Trying To Break Your Heart" just isn't the same without the fractured studio wizardry of the original) but overall it's a worthwhile listen for fans of everything Tweedy. |

I'm quite impressed by this, despite my not enjoying his work in the past this is very good (and, surprisingly, much better than the album his father released this year). The first half is an excellent run of varied Americana tunes. The album does get markedly weaker in the second half but there are still some highlights and there's enough variety across the whole thing that this makes a great listen overall. |

The boys are back on form here, this is about all I can ask for from a very 80s gothic rock/darkwave heavy post-punk album in 2022. It doesn't do anything new but the sound/songwriting/riffs/melodies are all pretty much on point. Not quite as memorable or varied in the songwriting department as that debut but it does what it's intended to do. |

Rating only based on the B-sides. The first four on the second disc are excellent and the rest range from average to really good. Only "Man of War" and "Lift" are good enough to have possibly made the album imo but after a number of listens to them I wouldn't be too disappointed if one or both had made the cut in place of "Subterranean Homesick Alien", "Karma Police", or "Electioneering". |

This album is simply an extremely satisfying listen from start to finish (with the exception of "Past Life"). Tame Impala have managed to do something different from their previous output but still sound very much like themselves, resulting in one of the easiest 4's I've heard. Currents doesn't quite reach Lonerism's heights, but it doesn't need to.rEdit: Well this is awkward. |

First half excellent plus second half good equals great overall. Jeff Tweedy has said that the idea is it gets mellower as it goes on, and this is not always a good thing. However the two halves work pretty well individually and as I said I would rate the first half a 4 alone while the second would get a 3. |

Whitney Light Upon the Lake |
A promising debut. Whitney have pretty much nailed their sound - a wonderful, breezy pastiche of late 60s-70s
pop, rock, and folk, with a bit of country and soul too - but for the most part they don't quite have the songs to
back it. Still, impressive work. |
Wilco Star Wars |
This album is, essentially, the sound of Wilco deciding, for better or for worse, not to give a fuck. Proof: They released it for free; it's fucking called Star Wars; it has a fucking cat on the cover. Most of these songs are quick and fun, with ra lot of ideas for their runtimes. Overall, the album does sound like a bit of a retread, but with nine albums now under their belt (not to mention the Mermaid Avenue albums, and, on Jeff Tweedy's part, a solo(ish) album and the four-album rUncle Tupelo run), this is no surprise. But Wilco don't give a fuck, so we might as well enjoy this for what it is: a short and sweet sampler of all things Wilco. This won't be one for the history books, but not every album needs to be. |

Dead Can Dance is certainly a decent and enjoyable effort, but its more derivative sound compared to DCD's later works makes this a less rewarding listen than what would follow it. Hints of what would come are present here, especially in some of the Lisa Gerrard-fronted songs, but overall the more simplistic songwriting and arrangements here lack the dark, captivating drama for which DCD are best known. |

Fleet Foxes Fleet Foxes EP |
A few good tracks here, a couple decent ones, and one kind of bad one ("Textbook Love"... ugh). Either way this is an intriguing listen as it presents an entirely different sound from everything else Fleet Foxes have produced. Presented here is a surprisingly simple, Beatlesque indie pop sound, only "Icicle Tusk" sounding even remotely like the lush and increasingly complex harmony-laden folk the band has explored ever since. While it's understandable that Pecknold and co have let this release fall into obscurity, it's worth a listen or two for fans of the band, if only to appreciate just how far they've come. |

There's a handful of really good tunes here ("The Love That We Need", "The Magic Kid", "Good While It Lasted") but the rest, while pleasant, are fairly unmemorable. Carll gets the stripped-down acoustic sound right, but the album falls short in the song department. |
Heartless Bastards Arrow |
Heartless Bastards Restless Ones |
This is good but still a lot of these tracks feel like they're not quite "there". They have all the right elements, but only some of these tracks cross the line into great; however, when they do ("Wind Up Bird", "Hi-Line", "The Fool"), they work exceedingly well. All that said, Erika Wennerstrom has some serious pipes, and really propels these songs. |

John Moreland Everything The Hard Way |
Everything the Hard Way, John Moreland's last studio album released before coming to greater prominence with 2013's In the Throes and his only billed with The Dust Bowl Souls as a backing band, is a set of mostly short, straightforward Southern rock songs, quite different from the comparatively mellow, lyric-centric but emotionally intense singer/songwriter Americana-folk he would later master. There are hints of that here (the brief opening title track, "Gods" and "This Town Tonight"), but the rest of the songs here sound basically nothing like anything Moreland has done since. Self-released, it's an incredibly authentic-sounding album, the sort of thing one could imagine buying as a cheaply-produced CD after a show by a local act. While the melodies and riffs are far from original and certainly do not do anything flashy, these songs are sturdy, heartfelt, and catchy. Moreland and co. know to keep things brief, so no song overstays its welcome, and the whole set comes in under 30 minutes, which makes the album quite listenable and replayable. Unfortunately, the lyrical content is also more generic than Moreland's typical fare, mostly conjuring images and feelings of youth and high school but mostly lacking the level of insight and craft of wordplay Moreland is known for. Again, this straightforward approach mostly works, so on the whole Everything the Hard Way is a very enjoyable release but probably not worth investigating for anybody who isn't already an established fan of Moreland's work. |

I love Marling's music, and on the surface this is a lovely release, but I can't help but feel this is just a bit too tried and true. Some of the songs in the first half are excellent, and it's hard to say anything here is less than good, but it's one of those instantly familiar records that, while very well made, are just a bit too comfortable to be memorable. A step down from Semper Femina, which saw her taking more risks in production and songwriting. |

This is nice psychedelic folk rock with some really good guitar playing. Unfortunately, Gunn isn't much of a songwriter or vocalist, and the sound is so uniform that many of the songs end up blending together. The album, both in its vibe and lyrics, is about getting lost, but overall it ends up getting a bit too lost in itself for its own good. Overall though, it's an enjoyable listen, fine background music, and great for a sunny summer afternoon. |

Coldplay Ghost Stories |
I have to give Coldplay props for trying something new at this point in their career, even if that something new is exceedingly dull and unimaginative electronic/synthpop. And sure, Chris Martin was never the best lyricist, but Ghost Stories' lyrics are particularly uninspired ("Ink" and "O" are exceptions). For this album, Coldplay have traded in the melodicism and emotional heft that made their first two albums (and Viva La Vida) so great for murky atmospheres. Sure, this isn't as cheesy as Mylo Xyloto, but ultimately, Ghost Stories elicits little other than indifference, and is none the better for it. |

King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard Murder Of The Universe |
King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard Paper Mache Dream Balloon |
This went from quite pleasant to pretty annoying in record time. |
Kleg Eating and Sleeping (#15) |
Linkin Park Hybrid Theory |
Lissie Castles |
I love Lissie's first couple albums but wow is this dismal. Awful lyrics, completely forgettable melodies, awkward electronic elements, bland songwriting. It randomly gets good in the last three tracks, which bring back a bit of Lissie's earlier folk/country sound, but they're not enough to save this thoroughly disappointing album. |

Steve Earle So You Wannabe An Outlaw |
Disappointing... Most of these songs are pretty generic, the instrumentation is often clunky, Earle's vocals are pretty bad... The only really good song is the closer "Goodbye Michelangelo", a nice tribute to Guy Clark. |

The Pretty Reckless Light Me Up |
Van der Graaf Generator Do Not Disturb |
Willie Nelson Summertime |
This is undoubtedly well-performed, but the production makes it come across as dull. Granted, that's about what I would expect from an album of 1920s and 30s standards being released in 2016. The material is of course good (except for "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off", which is atrocious), but it is not given the sense of life it deserves. |
Yves Tumor Heaven To A Tortured Mind |
Weird, I wasn?t expecting another Tame Impala album so soon. |
