06.18.19 | Ok, let's going to check these next competitors. Let this new round begins. |

06.18.19 | I'm really very curious about both albums. I suspect that we are going to have a very different journey of the last two, with much more mysterious and obscure stuff. |

06.18.19 | I'm already well familiar with 2 since it's my submission
Time to check out 1 |
Jethro42
06.18.19 | After one listen each, 2 could be a live album with its jamming nature. It reminds me of an ex-Twig competitor Badger - One Live Badger but this time only instrumental... with more instruments and diversity. Sounds great! 1 seems right up my alley. Reminds me of modern prog act Mad Fellaz at first glance. Very good match up, Friday.
|
SharkTooth
06.18.19 | dang it totally does resemble a live jam session
hell, it's even in the name "rocksession"
why wasn't I able to get this when I first submitted this album and its description?
|
Jethro42
06.19.19 | It's a jazz rock matter, so most of the time, it gives the impression it's live, but according to Progarchives, it's not. Because of the name ''Rocksession'', it's confusing for the least. |
Divaman
06.19.19 | After the first listen, I have a clear preference. Let's see it it holds up through two more listens. |
hansoloshotfirst
06.19.19 | Embryo is one these bands I've always planned to check out but never did. So I'm curious. |
Zig
06.19.19 | Gonna be a nice krautrock round. |
e210013
06.19.19 | After a first listen of both albums, I can say that we are in front of two very different proposals and I think I've a clear preference. I'm going to confirm that with the other three listenings. |
Jethro42
06.19.19 | I enjoy this round. I love me some jazz fusion. Krigssang is more busy with rigid structures and well done arrangements and tempo shifts, and needs some more attention. Sounds a bit strained in places.
Rocksession is a trippy, generous improvisation's jam and is more like background music. I particularly enjoy that kind of music when I hit the road, or when I chill out and sitting down outdoor with friends. I'm far from being decided on which one I prefer.
Both are grooving a lot, each in its way. |
Divaman
06.19.19 | Two listens now, and it was a little closer this time (but still the same favorite). One more listen apiece, probably tomorrow. |
Jethro42
06.19.19 | Diva, knowing your taste in music, I have my little idea on which one you gonna choose :) |
Divaman
06.20.19 | We'll see, my friend. We'll see. |
e210013
06.20.19 | "I think I've a clear preference."
After two listenings I'm not sure about that. Let's see what will happen. |
Divaman
06.20.19 | OK, I'm ready to vote. I suspect I'm going to surprise my friend Jethro with this one.
On first listen, I really didn't like the Trettioariga Kriget album at all. It's grown on me some with repeated listens -- I do like that second song. But there are some parts of it I just hate -- I tend to like my prog melodic, and there are times when both the vocalist and the music itself wander far from that pleasant pasture. (And this was one of those albums when my wife gave me one of those looks, and asked "Why are you listening to THIS?") I really wanted to like it, but it's just not my thing.
The Embryo was a whole different trip. I've mentioned at various times that I don't really like jazz, but that's because jazz can all too often be harsh and dissonant. (I used to know a local folk singer named Kathy Fleischmann. And any time she'd accidentally hit a clunker chord on her guitar, she'd smile and say, "Jazz!") For the most part, this music goes down smoothly, especially the third track, the aptly named "Warm Canto" -- they're right, here. It IS a warm canto.
So while I appreciated the Trettioariga Kriget a little more each time I listened to it, I still had a clear preference for the Embryo.
My vote is for Embryo.

Divaman
06.20.19 | So did I surprise you Jethro, or do you know me better than I suspected? |
Jethro42
06.21.19 | You did surprise me. Krigssang is the most prog of the two by far, and they have a good singer, but you recently said it's not the way you choose a candidate, and you rather go with the one you appreciate the most, so you did :) and i'm surprised cos I thought that Rocksession was too much jazz for your endurance. On the other hand, Krigssang requires a lot of attention. Given you have an attentive ear, I thought you'd be seduced by the sparse, clever arrangements and diversity of its content. In fact, I was sure you wouldn't appreciate Rocksession and all that jazz, which means you'd choose the other one by fault. You know what, Diva? You are more unpredictable than I thought! |
Divaman
06.21.19 | If I knew how to make a smile emoji, I'd do it here now. |
Jethro42
06.21.19 | Well received :] |

06.21.19 | This discussion has brb fun so far
I've only heard track 1 of krigssang do gear and i loved it, gonna see if the rest lives up tomorrow |
Jethro42
06.22.19 | Both albums have their highlights, and both have elements that irritate my ears. Krigssang is good at folk, funky and jazz fusion a la Mad Fellaz (Italy) and Deus Ex Machina - the latter being an Italian jazz fusion band that I have to add to the database - Krigssang is not consistently good, but their pros are pros. It's only that its great parts are scattered here and there. They have the potential to be better. I'm gonna listen to their first album, so yeah.
Rocksession is really great, but ''Entrances'' drags too much, to the point I keep and keep on waiting a climax or something, but in the end, nothing is happening and it's too long for nothing. I agree with Diva about ''Warm Canto'' ..That's pretty warm. I also really love the second part of the last song.
i'm voting for 1, but I really like both.

Jethro42
06.22.19 | Both bassists are seriously amazing. They have nothing to envy to some of the greatest jazz bassists. Also, Krigssang's three included bonus tracks are really delightful. |

06.22.19 | reslistening to 1 from the start and that opener is single-handedly better than anything on my Embryo
it's kinda disheartening to read that the record is not consistent because it really started on a high note
but i'm gonna be optimistic here |
Jethro42
06.22.19 | For Krigssang, I have a little problem with most of the vocal lines. They are not enough felt. Not a bad singer, but he tries too hard to use his vocals as an instrument, but fails in doing so. Vocals are not enough convincing melodically. If I listen only to the vocals, I'm not impressed. Instrumentally, everything is fine in general. What a good work between both guitarist and bassist. |
Divaman
06.22.19 | Honestly, that was one of the differences for me. Most of the time, he's at least an OK vocalist, but there were times he did obnoxious things with his voice. I'm very vocal-centric, but for me, no vocals at all beat vocals that are (at least occasionally) annoying. |
SharkTooth
06.22.19 | vocals aren't anything special but I found them kinda fitting with the instrumentation. That being said I can see why you aren't a fan
I'm almost through with 1 and found it p consistent all things considered. so far feeling somewhere between a 3.5 and a 4 |

06.22.19 | Okay i just finished 1. It ended on a pretty weak note but yeah for the most part it was excellent |

06.22.19 | FYI everyone, the album we are judging on the youtube link for 1 lasts only till about 37:47, so don't consider the bonus tracks afterwards in your decision. Too bad cause those bonus tracks are pretty awesome. The very first bonus track sounds like Television or something. |
Jethro42
06.22.19 | Yes, I mentioned it yesterday on this thread about the last three bonus tracks. I really like them too and they really could make a difference in our decision, but for one I haven't considered them.
And yes, viva Warm Canto! |
e210013
06.22.19 | Better to check it on Spotify. |

06.22.19 | Krigssang's production is so good damn. Love that bass |
e210013
06.22.19 | Better to check both albums on Spotify. |
e210013
06.22.19 | I've finished my third audition of both albums right now. And I continue very confused and divided. Definitely I need more listenings. This one will be very close to me. |
Friday13th
06.22.19 | My vote goes to Krigssang because the guitar playing is out of this world great and I've also been itching for a hint of that prog folk. I understand what people are saying about the singer, and he can annoy at times, but he's also kinda like Peter Hammill or the guy from Uriah Heep and it fits the energy of the album.
Rocksession has its very good moments, but these very long-winded jazz fusion albums with strong jam/free jazz influence aren't usually my cup of tea. The last two slower tracks are the best imo. |

06.22.19 | ''Warm Canto'' is really amazing. I'm listening it right now. It's very beautiful indeed. |
Divaman
06.22.19 | I feel like I hear some Allman Brothers vibe in the Embryo. |
Jethro42
06.22.19 | Maybe for the rhythm section. Allman Brothers are more guitar oriented though. |
SharkTooth
06.22.19 | the "up to 37:47" thing actually makes 1 significantly better. The way the album ended with the bonus track was a bit offputting for me
I'm going to hold out on a final decision because my album is in this round and I have an obvious bias I need to work through |

06.24.19 | I enjoyed Rocksession a lot more than I expected. Warm Canto has to be my favorite but Dirge also has great parts, and even the first track has its identity. Sadly, the track Entrances is the kind of unsatisfactory long winded jam that I can't love.
Krigssang on the other hand feels "pleasantly cold" and precise even when it's loose, solid all the way through.
So I vote for 1.
Fans of Warm Canto may dig this mellow fusion piece, as I find it similarly comforting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHqE6fy0WpE |
Jethro42
06.24.19 | Good comparison...I still prefer Warm Canto! |

06.24.19 | Krigssang is more or less classic prog with some off-the-wall song-writing choices. Embryo has more of that psych vibes and that sexy swagger pop-factor. Both are quite fun, but I suppose I feel closer towards classic prog.

06.25.19 | I'm not sure if ''consistent'' means the same thing in French (consistant). When I say an album is consistently good, I mean there is no filler, and I enjoy the album from start to finish, which is not the case for Krigssang. |

06.25.19 | After 4 auditions of both albums here is my verdict:
Trettioariga Kriget - Krigssang:
This is a very good album from a very good band. This is an album with a very good guitar work and an excellent bass line added by some nice mellotron work here and there. I can see some similarities with Anglagard and Landberk. Probably both bands were, somehow, influentioned by them. I only can see two less good tracks, the second and third tracks. For instance, at times, the vocals are a bit anoying in some moments. But overall, we are in presence of a great album.
Embryo - Rocksession:
This is a very good album of jazz rock fusion. I agree with the other opinions that it seems a jam live album. Still, I know that it isn't the case. I sincerelly like very much of it. I think this is a an excellent and intelligent fusion between krautrock, jazz rock and etnic music. I think they jam and improvise brilliantly. My only complaint is track one. I'm not a great fan of it. However, "Warm Canto" is an amazing track, like being in paradise for 10 minutes. So, this is another great album.
Here we are in presence of two great proposals, very distintive, but equal good. Still, I think "Rocksession" is a better album with only one less good track, to my taste. Overall, the rest of the album is excellent. "Krigssang" is, for me, less good with two less good tracks. Overall the rest of the album is excellent. But 1 is less ballanced than 2.
So, it seems this time I'm with the minority here. I decided to rate "Krigssang" with 3.5 and "Rocksession" with 4.0.
So, my vote goes to "Rocksession". |
Jethro42
06.25.19 | Just saying, for Krigssang, did you guys notice there is a forgotten song in the written tracklist called ''Mitted Mirakel''. Song is included in the actual sonic songs between ''Jag Och'' and ''Murar'' (from 12;42 to 16;13) |
e210013
06.25.19 | Yes, of course my friend. But, I can see your point. It does part of the Spotify version, which was actually the version checked by me. I love that track. I think it's one of the highlights of the album. |
Jethro42
06.25.19 | Ok e21, now I understand about Spotify. i've listened from youtube myself. The song plays, but on Progarchives and here on Sput, the song is absent. Man I agree with you about Landberk being reminiscent of Krigssan. Anglagard, i'm not sure, but since they're also from Sweden, it helps.
And yes, ''Mitted Mirakel'' is outstanding. |
e210013
06.25.19 | I can see slightly reminiscences of Anglagard in some parts. Still and unfortunatelly, they're very far of the quality and of the intricate style of that band. |
e210013
06.25.19 | If you want an advice, I think it's better to listen the albums on Spotify. The sound is better because it was catched as audio, despite the irritating publicity. The sound on Youtube was catched as video. At least it was the explanation of one of my sons.
But you're right my friend, the track doesn't appear on the track list of Progarchives. Only now I saw that. |
Jethro42
06.25.19 | Yeah it's hard to be more intricate than Anglagard! |
e210013
06.25.19 | "Yeah it's hard to be more intricate than Anglagard!"
Absolutely. Lol. I love those guys. |
Jethro42
06.25.19 | I usually use Spotify, but I didn't know that Krigssang was there. And thanks for your advice. Now that you say that, maybe Spotify offers better sounding. That being said, sound is sometimes very satisfying on Youtube.
As for ''Mitted Mirakel'', it's both absent from Progarchives and from Sputnik. |
e210013
06.25.19 | Oh, ok. Maybe it's a bonus track of a remastered edition. |
Jethro42
06.25.19 | It's most likely a forgotten song (not Marillion's forgotten sons lol). The Sputnik tracklist is probably a copy/paste from the Progarchives' tracklist, hence the double fault. |
e210013
06.25.19 | Maybe, but it's a pity. The track is very good, indeed. |
