06.16.20 | Radiohead, Bowie & Bjork get the same amount of hype anywere else. I wouldn't classify them as sputcore.
Sputcore is more like trophy scars and other bands that get way more hype on sput as anywhere else |

06.16.20 | Sputcore is one of a few things for me. Definition 1 is the stuff that gets praised through the roof here and is basically all the top all time charts plus a little extra. Definition 2 is when a band/album gets attention on this site way out of proportion to the rest of the world/internet. Albums or bands that have way more ratings here than rym fit this bill like my personal favorite Typhoon (USA-OR) whom I hype often. Definition 3 could be a band/album that has a larger following of staff/long-time users/popular users who all rate it highly, despite lack of universal acclaim. Laurel Halo- Quarantine briefly comes to mind for me here but I know there are better examples. |

06.16.20 | Gospel, Converge, Agalloch, The Hotelier and Trophy Scars are the first that come to mind |

06.16.20 | as far as I am concerned, sputcore is often stuff like indie bands (Brand New, Manchester Orchestra, The National ) or folk/singer songwriter stuff with emotional lyrics (Tallest Man on Earth, Sufjan Stevens, Jeff Rosenstock etc.). To a lesser extent it is some kind of (pop) punk with focus on lyrics like The Menzingers or The Hotelier. And then there are some screamo/post-hardcore bands like State Faults, but that's rather rare.
Also this site seems to be more connected to Black or Death Metal since nearly every Black Metal I stumble upon has at least 2 records with a 4-avg. But since I do not understand BM or DM, I can not really judge how this is sputcore or not. |
AsleepInTheBack
06.16.20 | stuff like Off Minor and Circle Takes the Square maybe? don't know how well they're hyped elsewhere |

I don't think that Sput-core is simply a matter of what is popular here. Kendrick Lamar is well beloved here but hardly Sput-core. Nor is it a matter of what is over-rated here. Sput-core may in fact includes bands that are over-rated but I don't think it's part of the *definition* of Sput-core. Seems to me like I could say "Thrice are amazing, maybe my favourite band - total Sput-core though" without any incoherence. To me, Sput-core consists of those bands that are emblematic of this website's brand or identity in relation to other music websites. There is a sense of what this site is "for" or "about" that certain bands really exemplify.
To my mind, what gives Sput its unique-ish niche is its focus on artists that fall in the sweet spot between two poles. One of those poles is heavy music. Heavy music is more central to Sput than it is for indie outlets like Pitchfork. The other pole is artsy music. Artsy music is more central to Sput than it is for, say, purist metalhead outlets. The bands I listed above seem to hit the sweet spot between those two polls. In other words, look for the cross-over bands that both indie kids and metalheads can dig, and there's a good chance you've found Sput-core.
Of course, Sput gives coverage to a wide variety of artists. But I feel like bands like the above are the centre of gravity around which everything else orbits. And different users gravitate more strongly to one pole or the other. Hence the clash between metalheads and indie kids here. But most users at least have some appreciation for both poles. I also think my take explains why Kacey Musgraves was such an upset AOTY. It was totally off-brand. Neither heavy nor artsy. |

06.16.20 | Nightbringer's theory also kinda nails it. Still does not explain the hype around many indie/folk/singer songwriter. But then again, it maybe because Sowing has a total inhumane review output (without lacking in quality) and that is kinda his niche, imo. So more staff featured reviews in that department? |
FR33L0RD
06.16.20 | Indeed, the nucleus of the list idea, imo, is the nightbringer comment.
Interesting, not so obvious, subject. |

Will make a nice soundoff for my next highly-hyped drivel. |
Yahwehisking
06.16.20 | etymologically its pretty simple: 1. sput: "An annular reinforcement in a steam boiler, to strengthen a place where a hole is made." and 2. core: "the tough central part of various fruits, containing the seeds." so basically that music that gets your inner steam boiler going, but also that nourishes your inner seed so that it will grow into a beautiful banana tree, or a nice rhododendron bush. i suppose philosophically it would make more sense if were a banana tree because the steam boiler would produce lots of moisture and heat--making the environment perfect for a tropical plant. so to be more concise, 'sputcore' is music that makes the inside of you a tropical paradise. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.16.20 | A whole lot of effort posting going on here when the term 'sputcore' can simply be boiled down to 'lowest common denominator' or 'smooth brain' music |

Demon of the Fall
06.16.20 | People typically name artists that are very popular elsewhere and even those that have widespread/mainstream recognition - examples of this include Converge, Radiohead, Opeth, The National etc. This isn’t Sputcore.
I reckon it’s anything that’s more popular here than elsewhere on the net, artists that have a relatively small following elsewhere, but seem significantly ‘bigger’ here. This is harder to identify for me now as I simply don’t frequent other music websites (anymore). I’ve got a few ‘educated guesses‘ for the sake of discussion though...
State Faults, Gospel, Slugdge, Rolo Tomassi, Ulcerate, Daughters? Unsure on Rolo, I knew of them before Sput, but they do have a big following here, not sure how that’s reflected elsewhere. |

06.16.20 | silly demon don’t forget that sput 13 years ago were hyping those same bands before they were at prime popularity - Deliverance/Damnation, You Fail Me, Amnesiac, Alligator - and there was more traffic back then of people coming and going making the tastes back then instead of the same 40-50 users hyping the same ol stuff that you named today mr. sputcore authority circa 2017 |

06.17.20 | "I reckon it’s anything that’s more popular here than elsewhere on the net..."
I think this is an important factor, because otherwise we're just listing popular artists. Hence Deftones/Opeth/Daughters shouldn't qualify (unless you desperately want to point fingers at pre-Blackwater Opeth maybe?). But yeah, good shout Demon |
Demon of the Fall
06.17.20 | @Relinquished: yeah I wasn’t here, but I’ve been listening to music/using internet resources/forums for a long time now. I have a fair idea of what was hyped at a certain point in time (there are gaps)... anyone claiming Converge are Sputcore is blatantly wrong for a start, that’s one I’m certain on (unless you have a very strange definition of the term).
You’ll find that people on music forums discover artists before they reach their height of popularity, what a perplexing phenomena! Definitely not unique to Sput. That’s not to say this place can’t (or hasn’t) played some part in promoting certain artists, I just struggle to believe it was the catalyst for Converge’s rise to prominence. |

06.17.20 | Run the jewels by far. They are very safe and entry level hip hop for people who do not regularly listen to the genre. Elp’s production gets more praise than it deserves simply because the masses of fans who love this group don’t venture outside of the safety of the vanilla rap bubble reddit creates for them. Killer mike is a weak emcee. His word play is average and his lyrics leave a lot to be desired. His flow can be good to great but its bogged down by weak lyrics. Elp is not a good rapper. Overall elp continues to be an average at best bomb squad rip off and the two have been lucky?fortunate?smart? In their taking advantage of a unique time in rap where their sub par product is being heralded as next level. |

06.17.20 | Neutral milk hotel is generally popular as a cult classic. It's not sput-specific at all |

06.17.20 | Agree with nightbringer and demon. Sputcore is usually a specific sort of darker/harsher type of music with added "artsy" stuff to differentiate with just metal and ALSO it can't be Deftones or Converge because what is wrong with you. |

AlexKzillion
06.18.20 | Yeah I agree to an extent... like Converge for instance. Sure they’re popular elsewhere but the staff voted Jane Doe the best album of the entire 2000s.
Bands like them, Deftones, Brand New etc. may have followings outside of the site, but they aren’t as unabashedly “loved” as they are here (in terms of sites/forums that aren’t restricted to a certain genre/scene/group of course). |
TheSupernatural
06.18.20 | For me, Sputcore is stuff that is stuff that is disproportionately loved here while remaining in relative obscurity outside of the site. That's not to say they aren't popular artists, but relatively meaning you wouldn't expect to start a conversation with a stranger in a record store and have them be a fan of the band in question.
Glassjaw's still rather popular off this site. Brand New is beloved on this site but they've also got a huge following outside of that. Same with Converge, Deftones, Run the Jewels, Death Grips, etc.
Laura Stevenson is a good example of what I'd consider sputcore. |
