08.30.20 | I don't understand the theme tbh. |
Minushuman24
08.30.20 | so take someone who is either corny, bad, or generally not looked upon in a serious light, and choose a song that many may not know by that artist that is actually very good!
Or it can be a song that is not looked in at in a serious manner that you think is actually very good
Like Cole thinks that Drake is kinda bad, but Cole chose a song he thinks is great by him
Or Widow chose a silly band and chose a song that he thinks is very good |
ArsMoriendi
08.30.20 | I hold the opinion that corny music is often unironically good due to its corniness, is that okay? |
Minushuman24
08.30.20 | totally
Essentially there's two categories great corny songs/artists, or a genuinely great song by a corny/bad artist |
Divaman
08.30.20 | The problem with this theme is one man's "corny" is another man's "great". But we'll see what we can do. |

off MESMERICA https://www.sputnikmusic.com/bands/Danbert-Nobacon-Kira-Wood-Cramer--The-Axis-of-Dissent/128485/
Danbert from Chumbawumba and one of his art students. It's a political, theatrical punk opera. This song has elements of post punk, reggae and art punk.
The album itself is so corny, there are skits throughout, where Nobacon puts on a child's voice. |

ngl it took me a while to think of an idol song embarrassing enough to make the list but bangin enough to be worth sharing. big dumb infatuation track (i think) about two girls. here is my translation of one of the best lines: "wtf is this certain death / are you gonna smile or not / i understand you less than maths"

The Guess Who - This is one of those songs I've known my whole life, but I think if you put a gun to my head I couldn't have told you it was by The Guess Who. It's nice, kind of chill, good vocal, nice acoustic guitar, even a little flute. Of course, it's not as good as "American Woman", but ... 3.8 |
Divaman
09.01.20 | I find Britney Spears totally corny. Whenever I think about when popular music went south, and radio transitioned from a lot of artists who wrote their own music to American Idol corporate-packaged bullshit, she's one of the first artists who come to mind. (I don't even hate her, although I'm pretty sure I don't own a single BS song). |

09.04.20 | Diva, did you even listen to it? There's no accordion on "Mammal." The instrumentation here is organ, guitar, bass, and drums only. Also, I find pretty much anything in the "geek rock" category corny as all hell, but this is good corny
|
ArsMoriendi
09.04.20 | "Undun"
This is corny? To me it just sounds like a pleasant psych pop song with good bass. It almost has a Begin Here Zombies vibe, which is unexpected, but I suppose not as catchy. I lik that guitar fit a lot actually. This song's pretty sexy. (Also, I don't Mind "American Woman" haha") Oh there's a jammy coda? Nice touch actually.
4/5
"Sacrifice"
Lazy slurred vocals, shitty trap beats. Damn Drake usually sucks, but this is somehow worse than his typical schlock. My brain is tuning this out like it does most generic pop, yeah. Can we cancel Drake? Wasn't he being creepy with minors once.
1.5/5
"Dance This Mess Around"
This is much slower than all of the hits I know by them, hmmmm. The children's toy piano in the background is kinda of annoying actually, but the vocals and organ are cool. This is overall good, but it's no "Private Idaho", "Party Out of Bonds", or "Rock Lobster" that's for sure.

09.08.20 | Yaeji - Nice electronic beginning. Sampled traces of a woman's voice which works its way louder and louder until it turns into a lead vocal. Nice. I like her voice. Oo, I see she's a New Yorker too. That's got to be worth an extra .2 or so. It's a little repetitive, but otherwise pretty good. 3.7 |

09.09.20 | Britney Spears - (shudder). Can't believe you guys are actually making me listen to Britney. I kind of blame her for the decay of Western pop music. But OK. Here we go. Oh yeah, I remember this one. Kind of a James Bond sound to the opening music. Her vocal is a little too kewpie doll for my taste, but I've heard worse. Song isn't terrible, but it gets a little monotonous. 2.8 |
Asdfp277
09.09.20 | le wrong generation vibes |
Divaman
09.09.20 | Maybe some, but it's more than that. For me, Spice Girls/American Idol/Britney were the dividing line for when we went from focusing mostly on artists who created and largely controlled their own music to when we went back to the way it was before the '60s musical revolution, where artists were largely made and controlled by the record companies. I dislike her more as a symbol of that change than I do for herself. (I don't remember if I said it earlier, but I used to write a column called "Life Beyond Britney".)
I felt sorry for her when she had her breakdown and it seemed like the press was trying to taunt her into suicide -- I thought South Park got the whole ritual sacrifice thing exactly right. |

09.14.20 | "Not My Type: Dead As Fuck 2"
This sounds like Marylin Manson, but worse and I don't like Marylin Manson. Giving head like a zombie? "If she's got a pulse, then she's not my type" Ewwwwww.
1.5/5
"UNA VITA IN CAPSLOCK"
THIS IS JUST ITALIAN LADY GAGA, POTSY AND YOU KNOW IT. THE MUSIC VIDEO ADDS TO THAT PERCEPTION TOO. I SUPPOSE THE BEAT IS BETTER THAN ANYTHING I'VE EVER HEARD FROM GAGA THOUGH. SHE SHOULD CALL HER FANS "MOSTRI."
2.5/5
"Building a Wall (Not Now, Not Ever)"
This theatery folk punk is inoffensive, but also boring. Why make it go reggae though? Good pick for the theme though, this sure is cheesy. Man these lyrics are bad. "Immigrant immigrant [adjective] punks." Why is this 7 minutes, though?
2.3/5
"Passion Fruit"
Autotune over a bad "lo-fi hip hop" beat "to study to." This is the modern zeitgeist folks. I suppose I'd hate it more if it were the Drake version though. Why does this 4 minute song feel like it's 10 minutes?
2/5
"Toxic"
Spears always had such a strange voice, but the spy theme backup music is cool. This is okay, but Kylie's "I Can't You Out of My Head" is so much better and has the same ghost writer: Cathy Dennis.
3/5
"Watch the Sky"
Pop punk with piano, okay. At least the band name is honest. This is not for me, ut I guess I don't find it torture.
2.8/5
"Get You"
This is K-Pop alright. Weird how this has no consistent members. So I guess it's more like a company than a group. Can a group like that even "break up" or am I missing something? This is bland as all hell. -.1 for the remid squeaking.
2.4/5
"I Will Come For You"
What am I in an 80s montage? The orchestra was unexpected and made this slightly less lame, I suppose. Back to the lamer part. At least the vocals are guttural growls. This sucks though.
2.3/5
"Heaven is a Place on Earthl"
This song is so lame, that it's like a 80s fever dream. WAIT, this is the girl from The Go-Gos? I never knew that. Well, it's no "Vacation" or "My Lips Are Sealed" that's for sure.
2.5/5 |
Divaman
09.14.20 | "This sounds like Marylin Manson, but worse and I don't like Marylin Manson. Giving head like a zombie? 'If she's got a pulse, then she's not my type' Ewwwwww." - You probably hate Shakespeare, too, don't you Ars?

09.14.20 | 12. VIRGIN STEELE (lol) - "I Will Come For You" [3.0]
not bad, but didn't grab me at all. i wished it were more bombastic, energetic, or cheesy even!
13. BELINDA CARLISLE - "Heaven Is a Place on Earth" [3.5]
fun reverb power pop! very nostalgic, very 80s >:]
14. VAMPIRE WEEKEND - "Hold You Now" ft. Danielle Haim [3.3]

09.14.20 | I mean Gaga's a 3rd generation American who has Italian ancestry, Myss Keta is actually Italian
My point still works
If you knew how much NY Italians butchered the Italian language (trust me, half of my family is that) you'd understand. The way we pronounce "mozzarella" is ungodly. Scratch that: the way we pronounce "capicola" is way worse. |
Minushuman24
09.14.20 | I've only heard like three Vampire Weekends songs, and they were all absolutely dreadful, so I am worried about this month's song. |
Minushuman24
09.14.20 | Also, someone should recommend "Code Blue" by TSOL for Ars. |

09.14.20 | "If you knew how much NY Italians butchered the Italian language (trust me, half of my family is that) you'd understand. The way we pronounce "mozzarella" is ungodly. Scratch that: the way we pronounce "capicola" is way worse."
dude, we have french canadians, trust me, i get it.
but nah, as much as i'd love it to be true, myss keta being italian lady gaga is a superficial take at best. the fact that they are both italian and that lady gaga has worn masks a few times is where all similarities end. their production styles and aesthetic have nothing in common beyond a superficial level and neither do their vocal styles. lady gaga may fancy herself an ~enigma~ but she isn't really as we know everything about her including her real name, no matter how many alter egos she wants to creat. She doesn't have just one signature aesthetic and she doesn't conceal her identity. Their music is nothing alike beyond being vaguely electronic, which isn't even always the case for gaga. And Lady Gaga actually sings while i'm not sure Myss Keta even CAN sing. She literally just talks.
Might as well call Myss Keta the italian Slipknot tbh

2. Sacrifices: This is good for Drake standards for sure - 3/5
3. Dance This Mess Around: This FUCKS - 5/5
4. Mammal: Knew this was an ars rec like 3 seconds deep. I can't tell if this is made for the same demographic as The Wiggles or Great Big Sea but either way - 1/5

6. UNA VITA IN CAPSLOCK: Wow yes queen i fucking stan you - 5/5
7. Building a Wall: This is what I imagine old Grateful Dead fans sing along to with their crusty pot-head toddlers while driving to Burning Man. The second half is kinda catchy tho - 2.5/5
8. Passion Fruit: Yaeji is often good, but rarely great - 3/5
9. Toxic: Timeless. Classic. - 10/5
10. Watch the Sky: insta-yikes. I made it about 0.75 seconds past where the vocals came in and that was already pushing it - 1/5 |

09.15.20 | Nino Ferrer - Motorway sounds followed by slow, dark acoustic guitar. Simultaneous male and female vocals. What's with the roadway sounds? Did they record this on I-95? Oops, no, he's European. Must have been some European roadway. Some brass sounds in the mix. Some synthetic organ. Ok, but a little boring. 2.8 |

09.19.20 | Boundaries - Heavy beat. Oh geez. One of THOSE vocals. What the fuck is he saying? Get the marbles out of your mouth and sing in English, boy. One of those where the beat keeps changing, too. No thanks. This has me looking forward to the Glee cast tomorrow, God help me. 1.0 |
Divaman
09.20.20 | Glee Cast - Oh God, this is starting off worse than expected. The Glee cast trying to be cool. Oh, the pain, the pain! Christ. My wife used to watch this stupid show. This is bringing back painful flashbacks. OK, let's focus on the music. Is this them covering Britney? I heard a Britney reference earlier. Lea Michele was kind of hot, though. That was the show's one saving grace. And I suppose Jane Lynch was kind of funny once in awhile. I don't know. Oh, and I heard The Flash used to be on there, didn't he. I don't think I ever remember seeing him, though. He must have been a minor character. Once you get past the initial horror of it being the Glee cast, I suppose I've heard worse. 2.0 |

09.20.20 | "Hold You Now"
Very middle of the road modern indie folk. The weird choral section does give it some character I suppose. Not my thing at all though.
3/5
"Looking for You"
This one feels smooth and sexy. I like the bass and the strings. And the organ and trumpet. This is very colorful musially. It's a basic love song lyrically, but has a great variety of instruments.
3.7/5
"Mirror's Paradise"
Riff riff riff plus gross vocals. This is not what I mean when I saw I lik industrial. This is like early 2000s Hot Topic metal.

League of Legends - Take Over (https://youtu.be/KbNL9ZyB49c)
Every year, Riot Games creates a theme song for the League of Legends Worlds Championship (Corny, I've got you covered). Take Over is this years theme. Proper ear buds and decent volume required, the production is completely insane imo. The bridge is in Mandarin since this years tournament is held in Shanghai. The song builds some nice hype for the biggest e-sports tournament in existence, but yeah it's corny af. I don't care, I love it. |

09.25.20 | Of Montreal - A bunch of drunks singing, followed by a special appearance of The Partridge Family. O wait, it's Of Montreal. The song has settled in now, with strummed guitars and a single vocalist. Feels like it's all over the place, though - it doesn't seem to follow logical musical progressions. I don't know - I've liked some of this band's stuff before, but this one isn't doing it for me. 2.2 |

09.27.20 | 6. UNA VITA IN CAPSLOCK- 2.8. The film clip added another dimension to this.
8. Passionfruit- 2.5. Ooooh Shiiiit, this is the "make it rain girl" you should have recc'd that instead, this is boring. I once played Riangurl for 4 hours straight at work.
9. Toxic - 0.2. Shit, aged like a shit kept at 80 degrees.
10. Watch the Sky- 2.3 This is some radio friendly stuff right here, but I have never heard it. Or is it christian rock? Either way it is corny.
11. Get You- 0.1. this can get fucked!
12. I Will Come for you- 2.0. NOOOOOOO, I Will Cum 4 U.
13. Heaven is a place on earth. 3.2. Was my sisters fav song when i was a kid.
14. Hold you now- 2.5. Worst song off their latest album, maybe their worst song. The gospel chorus almost saves it. Then the female vocalist murders it, that fucking cunted country twang. Fuck off!
15. Looking for you- 3.0 How dare youtube blur out the beautiful women on the cover, are they sexist, or maybe racist. The song is good, but not memorable.
16. Mirror's Paradise- 2.8 Shitty album cover, bunch of try-hard posers. Production is terrible, song is ok, but messy.
17. Wishing on a star- 2.5 This has been the worst month, this is ok, but that is it.
18. You're the voice- 0.4. Fucking Farnsey, growing up in Australia to this shit, I hated it then, and now i am cringing so hard i think my forehead just swallowed my nose. |

20. Me against the music- 0.0 Noooooooooooooooooo no no fuck no, in this case no one wins
21. A thousand years. 2.2 that wooooahwoooahwoo, worst fake crying ever, so much cheddar here. It kinda sounds like blaqk audio, hahaha,
22. Gay Boy- 0.0 Where the fuck do you find this shit.
23. Witches in Bikinis- 1.0 Nice voice, lyrics and the hummmming are awful.
24. Stay- 5.0
25. Your Magic is Working- 2.9 This band is good on drugs, the sound kinda floats around the room, but i'm not on drugs now, and it is kinda boring.
26. Mash Potato Time- 0.2. Cheesy mashed potatoes tastes quite nice, splash some truffle oil, freshly cracked pepper and parsley. Nothing to say about the song.
27. Take Over- 1.1, more radio friendly bullshit.
28. Broken Strings- 0.7 I don't mind some of nelly furtado, but this guy is terrible.
29. Love they Say- 1.3 Remember when these twins put out decent music, this ain't that time. They are 40 now!
30. Wreck Havoc- 0.2. This is painful. Everything about it is the worst.
31. Come On Eileen- 4.7. lol, the bonus track is 1000 times better than anything this month had to offer.

Dance This Mess Around: This is silly and fun. And her voice reminds me of Sinéad in a way, sorry Sinéad but it does. Like the shouting too. And that silly organ. Haha! 3.7

Passion Fruit: So much autotune! It's nicely warm production wise though. That's good! 3.0

Heaven Is A Place On Earth: Hahahahhahahahahaha yes this is cheesy alright. Man. Amazing. I don't know. I love it I guess? Such a clear product of its time. Horrible yet amazing. Sometimes you want nothing else. 3.5
Hold You Now: Definitely cheesy. I never really liked them because of his voice I think. This is quite calm and introverted for them. That choir is amazingly cheesy. 2.7
Looking For You: Those synth-violins are amazingly cheesy. As is the humming. And the singing in general. It's also very slow. And man that organ part. Haha yes. I like the flow though. It's nice. 3.0
Mirror's Paradise: Uh oh! Post Nexus Kovenant! I can't really listen to them, don't know why. I even have Nexus on CD, but it was too much even for me as a teen. Totally cheesy though! 2.8 |
Trifolium
09.28.20 | Wishing On A Star: That was amazing. Love her velvety vox. Super cheesy too. Perfect! 3.7
You're The Voice: Yeah I remember this one. They used to play this in the pool. I think cheesy and pool-music are synonymous in the Netherlands (don't know about where you are all from). Nicely uplifting and catchy. 3.5
Carve: Hmmm yes, why is this cheesy? Because the whole genre is maybe? I'm not to big on this genre in general. And you know that when 3 minutes feel like forever that something is wrong. It's not tooo bad though. 2.0
Me Against The Music: I mega prefer the original, but this is fun of course. Britney has stood the test of time as far as I'm concerned. The original is so much more energetic. 3.2
A Thousand Years: WHOA HO HO NOOOOOOOO! I guess? Very retro-revival. Feels like I've heard these synth lines a thousand times already. It's not bad though. 3.0 |

09.28.20 | "Wishing on a Star"
This fits the theme well. It's very corny, but also soothing and pretty. That pickup at the endis very generic disco. Not bad, but not amazing.
3.1/5
"You're the Voice"
This is a generic as 80s pop can get. One of those songs you just wait for the end of 1 minute in. That uplifting guitar shredding seals that deal that this song is terrible.
2/5
"Carve"
I hated this from the riff alone, now that the voice is in, I feel like this might be the worst of the month.
1/5
"Me Against the Music (Glee Cast Version)"
Glee is Kidz Bop for adults. Just listen to the real version. This is as harmless as regular pop though, it just reeks of pointlessness.
2.3/5
"A Thousand Years"
Hooayohohoh hooayohohoh hooayohohoh this is generic, but pleasant and catchy. Not much else to say about this one.
3/5
"GAY BOY"
MORE CAPS TITLES (AT LEAST ON YOUTUBE.) HER SIGING IS BAD, BUT INTENTIONALLY BECAUSE IT'S A JOKE. I'D FIND THIS FUNNIER IF I DIDN'T KNOW A GIRL WHO DESPERATELY WANTED HER GAY FRIEND TO TURN FOR HER, BUT IT'S STILL FUNNY.
3/5 |
ArsMoriendi
09.28.20 | "Witches in Bikinis"
Halloween music for edgy scene teenage girls. +.1 for storytelling keeping this at least semi-fun.
2.6/5
"Stay (I Missed You)"
Very 90s guitar opening. Vocals are fine, but this is mostly just generic 90s pop rock. Not for me.
2.5/5
"Mash Potato Time"
This is the The Monster Mash's special needs little brother. He calls himself a rapper, but isn't he just plainly talking? Rap is supposed to have rhythm.
1.5/5
"Take Over"
This sounds like Imagine Dragons, but slightly more musically involved. I guess that's half a complement, half an insult. Oh god, a short rap section, just what this song didn't need.
1.8/5
"Broken Strings"
Boring pop rock that feels endless. Holy crap it's still going on. I feel like I've been listeing to this for 5 hours.

He has puff daddy levels of charisma and flow; none. monotone and talentless kid who poses as someone who came from the hood. He's a hack pedophile who has done nothing worthwhile..... Except Hotline Bling, cause that song bangs. Anyway, this doesn't do anything for me, this beat is flat and uninteresting, annoying even, and every one's bars is straight garbage. Young Thug's verse, as dumb as it is, saves this from being even lower. 1.9
3. Dance this Mess Around - B-52's - Potentially their best track? The bass, the vocals, everything on this track is amazing.. It is depressing to see this song getting glossed over as much as it has this month. 4.8
4. Mammal - They Might Be Giants - This was nice! I liked it. decent early indie. 3.4
5. Not my Type - Motionless in White - wtf I love hot topic 0
6. Una vita in capslock - myss keta - sexy. 3
7. Building a Wall - The Axis of Dissent - Oh no this is 7 minutes. I love political songs as much as the next guy, but that's a long song. I do however quite like this sound a lot. Alright, I was lead to believe by the ratings and the album cover that this was gonna be trash. Idk if it is just because it is preaching to the choir, but this song is genuinely great. The ska/reggae bridge is fantastic, and it really shows the crust punk background off well. This has no right being this fun of a song. 3.7
8. Passionfruit - Yaeji - I love the electronics on this, her modified vocals are a bit bleh though. This goes on for way too long. 3.1
9. Toxic - It's Britney, Bitch - 3.6
10. Watch the Sky - Something Corporate - Oh man, this is very much a 2000
s indie pop rock song. Cannot get behind these vocals. It gets better when it hits that Taking Back Sunday esque chorus. Is it just me or is this song horribly mixed. 2.9 |

7. Building a Wall (Not Now, Not Ever) - video unavailable
8. Passion Fruit - spotify
9. toxic - 3.0, it's refreshing to listen to hyperpop music released before it all got infected with that miserable trap stylized percussion production. wow, britney is a total slut in this music video. god damn cultural marxism compromising our proud white culture. thanks trif
10. watch the sky - 2.0, can't do the pop punk vocals but i'm sure it would work well as the theme to a early 2000's teen romance tv movie

Pangea
09.29.20 | A thousend years - this is really cheesy and kinda generic but it is also really catchy so i still like it. 3.3

Pangea
09.29.20 | your magic is working - this is really nice and summery psych pop. great instrumentation too. yeah love this. 4.2
Mash Potato Time - this is super annoying. 1.3
Take Over - i can see it working as a hype song for a tournament but it is dreadful otherwise. the production is way over the top and the chorus is awful. 1.5 |
Pangea
09.29.20 | Broken Strings - this song is a jam. 4.0
Wreck Havoc - these vocals are lot but i kinda like this. 3.0

31. Come on Eileen - yeah ok it's a banger. 4.7 |
Divaman
09.30.20 | Angelspit - Mechanical factory noises and whispering (I thought I heard whispering. Maybe that was just the voices again.) followed by heavy syncopated percussion and a male and a female voice chanting like angry robots about wreaking havoc. 3.1
Dexys Midnight Runners - a classic by this British Celtic soul band. 4.4
So how to we count it if the bonus pick gets the highest score for the month, which very possibly might happen? |
SlothcoreSam
09.30.20 | The bonus song is only allowed to be the winner if it is the only song recommended by that user that month.
Ps.
October tomorrow! |

09.30.20 | "Love They Say"
I actually like the percussion and atmosphere here. Like the musical direction is actually pretty and engagng in a surprising way.
3.9/5
"Wreak Havoc"
Sounds like Nine Inch Nails so far musically. Really fun actually. Now it's gotten more metal, but not too heavy. Would I ever explore this artist further? No, but this is better than most of the heavy stuff you guys pick.
3.6/5
"Come on Eileen"
Yeah the violin here rules yeah. His voice was always kinda funny to me. The ending honestly is super fun and I forgot about that part. Picking this song is like cheating.
