All Animal Collective Ranked
I have an odd(sac) tradition of jamming a LOT of Animal Collective in November. Here we are again. They're so bizarre and I love them so much. This is my whatever ranking of everything I found I was worthy of ranking in their wild discography. I've included their more well-known EPs and singles, but again, this just me.
EDIT: DAMMIT - The list is in reverse order, so #1 is my bottom and #18 is my favorite. Ugh |
1 | | Animal Collective Danse Manatee
#18 -dissonant, brash, occasionally delicious |
2 | | Animal Collective Prospect Hummer
#17 - gorgeous, meandering, lower than it probably actually is |
3 | | Animal Collective Campfire Songs
#16 - also gorgeous, ethereal, one of their most "experiential" listens |
4 | | Animal Collective People
#15 - the fat off of Feels. Same feels, more dissonant approach |
5 | | Animal Collective Ark
#14 - an aggressive foray into sound-effects indie, with very incidentally pretty moments scattered |
6 | | Animal Collective Bridge to Quiet
#13 - a deceptively catchy batch of droners |
7 | | Animal Collective Tangerine Reef
#12 - a deceptively beautiful batch of droners |
8 | | Animal Collective Painting With
#11 - tried to punch out my own ears when it first came out, realizing they were just having a sloppy, glossy good time |
9 | | Animal Collective Honeycomb/Gotham
#10 - hard to believe that maybe the 2 best songs from the Centipede Hz sessions didn't make it onto Centipede Hz |
10 | | Animal Collective Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished
#9 - "perfect percussion" sounds different to everyone, but there are cathartic, gorgeous songs bolstering this surprisingly epic first offering |
11 | | Animal Collective Water Curses
#8 - these songs are just about as sticky sweet as their A-side brethren on Strawberry Jam |
12 | | Animal Collective Centipede Hz
#7 - like a tropical punk-rock record that got smashed into an industrialized grinder - some of their most meh stuff mixed with some of their most awesome |
13 | | Animal Collective Time Skiffs
#6 - a "return to form" if you thought they ever lost it - admittedly safe, beautiful and diverse throwback album |
14 | | Animal Collective Sung Tongs
#5 - the grower of all growers - always amazing that this sounds like way more than just 2 dudes banging acoustic guitars, drums, and vocals |
15 | | Animal Collective Fall Be Kind
#4 - Merriweather's autumnal little brother sometimes surpasses it's big bro, just an EP though |
16 | | Animal Collective Merriweather Post Pavilion
#3 - you know - this album kicks arse |
17 | | Animal Collective Feels
#2 - these last three don't need much introduction, hence my Merriweather half-assery - this album makes you feel like you're a part of the actual Earth |
18 | | Animal Collective Strawberry Jam
#1 - one of my all-time favorite albums - a gorgeously bizarre approach to myriad styles of indie-pop that all pop |
