The art of the fourth Coda Chroma album is misleading relative to the dim light emanated from the music thereof; a kind of dusk, that becomes sheer darkness in places, not brooding and ominous, but warm and encompassing, that only select outfits such as this one, know how to steer and convey. Mørkdrøm
3.8 - black metal from Denmark.
Having burned Written In Waters on my mind, soul and body time and again, I can say with some certainty that Mørkdrøm is one of the closest tokens to Ved Buens Ende's seminal release. The first thing that draws the comparison, is doom-laden rhythm section, along with the bitter/lofi guitars and the nonlinear arrangements. That's not to say that Røkkr are merely plagiarizing; in their venture towards lofi black metal the Danish way, they are not as technical and abstract. The nostalgic acoustic guitar parts, the pure ambient segments, and some ritual invocations, everything comes from the band's own personality. Featuring members of the wider hard rock/heavy metal scene of Los Angeles, Intranced have made due to the promises of early releases, and deliver a critical mid '80s hard rocking metal throwback. Darkness, Then Light
3.8 - power/doom metal from Italy.
Power/doom metal, as it was introduced in the '90s by legacies such as Candlemass, Veni Domine, Abstrakt Algebra, Memory Garden etc., is making a critical comeback this year, and Darkness, Then Light is nothing short of a worthy commemoration of that sound. What sets apart In Aevum Agere's fourth album in particular, is its awesome association with extreme metal, in terms of rhythm guitars, technical rhythm section and their respective sound production. Shrapnel began to reroute to remain with their previous album, and I Gravity sees the English outfit going through with the transition as smoothly as possible. Fortunately, some metalcore elements have been kept to a minimum, as the band opts out for a traditionally modern (sic), groove metal sound, which combined with their top notch instrumental prowess, suits the bill particularly well. 3.5 - death metal Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Nothing new under the sun, albeit extremely solid US death metal in the vein of Death's classic Spiritual Healing. Relatively rich on rhythm guitar riffS, Terminal Limit leaves a universe to be desired in terms of lead guitar work, but that's not a predicament for people into minimal forms of death metal. Sound work leaves a lot to be desired, but under the semi-lofi hood there is a highly competent band delivering top notch aggression, liminal to punk and tech thrash. Stream: Cremation Pyre picks up from where the EP concluded, albeit with a couple of differences; firstly, the sound work, while still fitting for death/doom metal, it is much much cleaner. Second, herein Phenocryst are heavily drawn to Bolt Thrower (sans the grindcore elements), but unlike the EP, the song writing diversity is almost non-existent.
