07.20.11 | I think they've always been extremely overrated anyways. |
Carnifex
07.20.11 | They're pretty good if you ask me, I prefer Bloodbath though. |
McMegaMountain
07.20.11 | Agreed. Never really bought into them. Saw them live twice, as a favor, and the woman seems to really like them. I just hear them shrug. |

07.20.11 | You're probably just at the aphelion of your period. |

07.20.11 | I just don't like how unbalanced some of their songs are. Especially the 10 min plus ones where you have to listen forever just to hear the part you enjoy. |

07.20.11 | I tend to like some of they're longer songs. But you're right. Sometimes the stylistic changes are very unnecessary and awkward. |

07.20.11 | " Its like, their music is too perfect and refined. Everything they've released rsince Still Life sounds so calculated and polished. I still think they're extremely talented, but rI've just lost interest. "
I had this exact argument with my Opeth-fanatic friend last year. He couldn't understand why my favourite Opeth album is Morningrise. I just find their more recent work to be too perfect-it grates on my nerves. There's no charm or soul in the form of a slight misstep or something that doesn't quite gel-especially with Mikael's vocals.
I mean, I still love them, but that's why I'll never love Opeth as much as I do bands like Deftones or Isis or Faith No More or something. |

07.20.11 | i feel this way about metal in general. i like it but i dont give enough of a fuck to listen to it anymore. |

07.20.11 | Butkuiss, as much as i agree with you, I would still say that my favorite albums are Still Life and BWP. God, Serenity Painted Death is really good. |

07.20.11 | Yeah, I'm trying to get into them. It's like some weird paradox for me, I tell myself that Blackwater Park is amazing and yet it won't hold my interest for more than a couple songs at a time. Must be these shitty headphones... |

07.20.11 | I dont know, I feel like some of you are thinking about a little to hard but I do agree on the comments of some of their later albums. List is sweet I love 2, 3, and 6. |

07.20.11 | Their older material is by far their best. Sometimes I go pretty long without listening to them, half a year to a year as well. But when I come back to it it's still pretty sweet. I guess it's like that with all music, if you over listen to it you'll just want to hear something else. |

07.20.11 | 3 is better than all of the Opeth albums combined. |

10.20.21 | I reached that point with Death Grips and now even Deftones to an extent. Both unquestionably my favorite bands five years ago that I've just grown less and less interested in listening to.... which mostly has to do with just running them into the ground more than anything. Still enjoy hearing the odd song on shuffle but I have near zero interest in jamming an entire album anymore (besides ohms really cause that's new) |

10.20.21 | Think you get to a point where you've heard an artist so much that certain quirks start popping out to you that you just find more and more annoying every listen |

10.20.21 | Here's how I do it:
If a band you have loved most of your life has seen less and less rotation, and you don't know why except that maybe you ran them into the ground, then they become "Emeritus" bands. This isn't for bands you outgrow, or who maybe had a couple of albums out of their entire discography that you really enjoyed but nothing more...more for bands who you've had a lifelong obsession with, but don't spin as much for no other reason than maybe you've got new stuff to listen to.
For me, a band like that is Bad Religion. I can spin any Bad Religion any time and have a good time, but I just don't think to do so. And I love (almost) all of their albums...so for me, they're Emeritus. |

10.20.21 | As far as Opeth...my favorite record remains 'Ghost Reveries', and generally that's as far as I'll go with them. It's actually similar with Dream Theater--'Black Clouds and Silver Linings' was the last DT album I was invested in, and for some reason just never actually tried or wanted to listen to another one after that. |
