Lucman
10.23.20 | What I do is I don't let myself see single records. What I mean by that is that, if this is the list records you can't decide between, see them in the context of the artist's whole career and narrow in on that. So ok, I really want to hear A Dawn To Fear, but many of their other records are highly rated too. Start a discography run with Cult Of Luna, take your time, and set out to really get to know them as a band rather than that single record that everyone's talking about/wants to know your thoughts on. That mindset has made venturing through music so much easier and more rewarding for me as it eliminates that rush to check the next best thing. |
Dewinged
10.23.20 | That's a good idea Luc, I like it. Mine is fairly complicated.
I divide the week in decades, 70s Monday, 80s Tuesday, etc until 2010s Friday, Then weekends are for current year stuff. That said I pick 3 albums per day that I have to jam back to back, reading about them, etc. The extra time goes into that year's playlist of my favorite tracks.
And that's basically it, a bit of organizing yourself and you would listen to new stuff, nostalgic stuff and all time classics! |

10.23.20 | tis a conundrum, agreed. i sometimes end up playing one song from a record, then getting distracted by something else exciting and playing one song from that, and the cycle repeats.
i think it means you just need a break from rushing through trying new things. savour all that good shit that you've already heard and, as Luc says, there's no rush. explore at your own pace, don't fall into the "1 listen and dump" routine. the best records are those that you spend that good quality time with getting to know anyway.
or you do a Dewi and get organised (something I have had no success with) |

Demon of the Fall
10.23.20 | It can be overwhelming, although don't think I've ever had it this bad (sitting in silence and not actually selecting anything).
For me the easiest way of organising my time is simply to plan in advance. I find if I open Spotify (or whatever) on auto-pilot then my decision making process is often skewed by what I've just seen - 'oh let's throw on that new release everyone is talking about' which can be an issue if I've already got a few things on my plate. Decide how much you can realistically manage per day / week (whatever's easiest) and spilt your time sensibly, allowing enough to revisit things and listen to favourites. |
AsleepInTheBack
10.23.20 | one thing that can work is to clear out your Spotify saved/downloaded albums and start afresh. that way you're less tempted to get sucked into the 'omg look at all this cool shit what do i do' frame of mind and you actually have to actively search for music rather than going into autopilot. |

This so much. I almost have to remind myself of this everyday. It feels so weird because i kind of feel guilty or that i'm using my time badly if i listen to some record for the 20th time. You know what i mean?
It's like, why should i listen to this again if i have this gigantic list of stuff to go through? And what if i'm missing out on a huge diamond hidden underneath that pile? Problem is even if i find the diamond, i will be too guilty or pressured to just move on to other stuff.

Yeah this kind of approach must definitely kill your enjoyment. As Sinternet said, don't make (enjoying) music a chore. Ultimately the question is, do you want to hear as much music as possible, or do you want to enjoy music as much as possible? I'd say the second option is preferable. I never understood the pace at which all you guys check out new music; if I like an album, I don't mind listening to it until I don't want to anymore, whether that's 10 spins or 50 spins. Don't force music down your own throat.
What also might help, I have found out, is sometimes just not listening to music. I don't know your listening habits, but I tended to fill every spare moment with music, which in the end also hampered my enjoyment. If you don't really feel it, just go do something else - that way, when you return, you'll like the music even more.

10.23.20 | Yea, I only got to enjoy Isis after a couple of listens. Panopticon was my first album, some sections caught my attention but I felt overwhelmed for the most part. I only started appreciating their sound after 3-4 listens, same with Cult of Luna and Neurosis. However, I feel as if it's real easy for me to dive in a new Post Metal album now since I've grown used to it and I can generate an opinion on the second listen, and that applies to a lot of weird/experimental stuff that I like to listen to.
Guess it's all about training your ear, but then again, if you force yourself to listen to new stuff just because someone told you to, you will just hate it and ruin your entire music adventure |

If I don't really want to come back to something that I gave one or two full listen(s) to I will go ahead and rate it and move on. If it is something I really enjoy, I don't always rate it right away, or I just give it a preliminary number and change it later on if I feel the need to
No need to force yourself to listen to something repeatedly that you don't necessarily like just to give it a number rating on a music website, unless you are reviewing it, I guess, I dunno |
Demon of the Fall
10.24.20 | I play Fallout 4 all the damn time, keeping coming back. At this point I’m not even playing it for the quests (if I ever was), I just find it relaxing, cathartic almost and it’s got to the point of being nostalgic (like Fallout 3/NV both are). It’s easy and I can play on auto-pilot whilst extracting a modicum of consistent yet fairly mild enjoyment from it. Now if I was a gaming aficionado looking for my fix this wouldn’t suffice, but for a music listener just looking for something to do in the background it’s absolutely perfect.
If I had more time on my hands I’d dedicate myself more to gaming I guess, like I used to. |

10.24.20 | Fallout 4 is kinda the perfect game for that. I should pop it back in here soon after I finish off some shorter games I have been playing
That kinda sucks, Veks, at least it would to me. Most of the time, if I am not into something within the first couple of songs, I just move on and see if it comes back into my attention later on. If I don't even have an inkling of 'this could be something I would like to continue listening to,' I figure what's the point in listening to the whole thing
I also like to revisit stuff that pops up in My Discussions that I gave a somewhat lower rating to and/or didn't download, maybe only gave a cursory listen to, or just straight up forget to even check in the first place. Sometimes I come back with a higher rating and a new artist to listen to |
