12.11.24 | Lots of obvious omissions like Cavern Womb, Mitochondrion or In Vain. Just goes to show how great this year has been. |

12.11.24 | Yaaaasssssssss, excellent list Nex |
NexCeleris
12.11.24 | @efp: That's some excellent, cream-of-the-crop typa thoughts.
@Hawks: lu2. Was surprised to see you didn't like 29. More realistically, that spot should have gone to something like Heresiarch or Diabolic Oath, but this way I got to sneak in more disso.
Thanks, cyl and Uzu! Both of you have been a big source of inspiration.
Weeeeee, featured! |

12.11.24 | my favs are like Uttertomb, Apparition, Octoploid, Abhorration. Maybe Nuclear Tomb on the list if I jam that a few more times. Adding Moral Putrefaction to the todo list. |
NexCeleris
12.11.24 | Damn, where were those recs before I made the list? Haven't heard Octoploid or Nuclear Tomb. Uttertomb and Abhorration would have been good picks, no doubt. |
evilford
12.11.24 | Great list bro. Gotta check a few of these
BTW that vomitrocious album kills |
NexCeleris
12.11.24 | Omg, Ford, you just called it great. You sure you didn't mistype 'nice'? Truly a special year.
Dystopian Elegy tramples. Glad you enjoy. |

12.11.24 | Yeah this is hot. Was worried for a moment this list was a downhill snooze but it picked up quick! |

12.11.24 | Very nice list Nex, you've outdone yourself again! |
Jurtz
12.11.24 | Does anyone know where I could stream or buy (digital) #33? |
NexCeleris
12.11.24 | We got some celebs in here. Please call in advance next time, so I have time to clean up.
Thanks for the rec, chef. Will be checked along with the ones zar mentioned.
@Jurtz: Only know of the yt stream:

If you want higher fidelity, I'm afraid you'll have to go physical. Availability is good tho. |
Jurtz
12.11.24 | Okay, I'll use the YT stream for now. If I really like it I'll get the $29 vinyl. |
Pikazilla
12.11.24 | great list! The ones I've heard slap and you got none of that silly undeath/200 stabwounds shite. Will check some osdm off here in the coming days. |
Demon of the Fall
12.11.24 | definitely intrigued by that Tantric Bile release but missing loads here, so I’m sure there’s more
Ingurgitating Oblivion is sweet |
NightOnDrunkMountain
12.11.24 | Scholarly list, fantastic work Nex
I think I'd put Viscera Infest's killer new album more under something like "Brutal Death / Goregrind", and the top three for that would be:
#3 Posthumous Regurgitation
#2 Septage
#1 Viscera Infest
Then, refill Deathgrind with the new Shock Withdrawal, and you're all set |
NexCeleris
12.11.24 | Was considering further splitting subgenres, but ultimately decided against it. Agree with your observation regarding Viscera Infest not being deathgrind in the proper sense, but the label marketed it as "Brutal Deathgrind", so I thought it was fair game.
Greatly enjoyed your 2 and 3, but would have probably added the also quite goregrindy Hemorrhoid over Shock Withdrawal in that scenario.
In general, there's a lot of subgenre overlap going on here, e.g. Black Curse could have been labeled blackdeath, Concrete Winds deathgrind etc. This end result made it a little easier to get in some more under-the-radar stuff.
Biggest regret is not adding Cavern Womb as "Best EP" or something. Sput makes it painful to retroactively add stuff near the bottom in reverse order mode...
Thanks for the kind words. |
botb
12.11.24 | Haven’t heard half of these, posting so it shows up in my feed |
cylinder
12.11.24 | "definitely intrigued by that Tantric Bile release"
duuuude you gotta check that one. It's like Effluence taking a World Cultures class on acid |
NightOnDrunkMountain
12.11.24 | Cavern Tomb are definitely up there for death metal EP of the year, along with Sedimentum, Gutvoid, Disentomb and Gorgasm for a top 5 |
brainmelter
12.12.24 | nice list, too many ppl are sleeping on 43 and 19 |
Voivod
12.12.24 | Great list, it needs Skeletal Remains, and Necrot.
41 has the livelier sound work I've heard in ages, as far as death metal goes. |
NexCeleris
12.12.24 | Wow, even more royalty.
Fragments of the Ageless was enjoyable and would likely make my osdm top 15. Lifeless Birth, on the other hand, was just slightly above average to me. |
Pikazilla
12.12.24 | nex have you heard eternal - cryptic lust?
great slab of osdm |
NexCeleris
12.12.24 | I have not, but that'll change tonight. Much appreciated. |
cylinder
12.12.24 | think that Iniquitous Savagery album deserves to be here too |
NexCeleris
12.12.24 | I see your mileage already varied, but I liked both Submerged and Into the Ashes better than that one. It would probably make top 10.
Carnophage would have been next in line. |
cylinder
12.12.24 | for sure, different strokes. I liked that Submerged one a lot too. what lurks in the depths of the ocean is a very underutilized/untapped source of subject matter for bdm i'd say haha |
NexCeleris
12.12.24 | Spot-on, and tbh I hope it keeps being an exception. Thematic blueprints like alien tech death can be rather tiresome unless they're pulled of really well like in, say, Gigan's case. Bands like Brodequin exemplify what's possible with even just a hint of creativity. |
cylinder
12.12.24 | that's a good point. doesn't take too much to stand out from the sea of "mutilation," "necrophilia," "engorgement," etc etc lol |
Hyperion1001
12.12.24 | engorged shark mutilation |
Relinquished
12.12.24 | still surprised 32 came back |
NexCeleris
12.12.24 | Is it really a comeback if it's their debut LP? Was more surprised I liked it this much after their 2009 demo, which was so-so imo.
"engorged shark mutilation"
Selachimorphectomy? |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.12.24 | Veilburner, bro! That might be my favorite of the year tbh |
NexCeleris
12.12.24 | Yeah, that's a sweet record. Would have been included if this was a black metal list. They've been toeing the line, but I'd classify their latest as bm with dm influences rather than full-on blackdeath. |
Relinquished
12.12.24 | didn’t say it was a comeback, just surprised it took 15 years
demo rules too |
cylinder
12.12.24 | "Selachimorphectomy?"
now that is bad. ass. |
ThyCrossAwaits
12.13.24 | Rather than complain about something you missed (this year has been absolutely batshit with metal) I'm gonna be thankful for the stuff you listed that I missed
Cheers mate |
NexCeleris
12.13.24 | Glad you found even more stuff to jam.
Please feel free to share the releases you think I missed. |
Futures
12.13.24 | you might be the expert, man so much stuff in one genre. cool stuff. love the breakdown by specific subgenre.
ones i want to check out 34, 33, 23, 21, 15, 13, 12, 5, 4, 3, 1 |
NexCeleris
12.13.24 | Just checked way more stuff than in previous years. Wouldn't call myself an expert, and as you can tell by the comment section, this list is far from the be-all and end-all of '24 dm.
Pretty sure you're gonna enjoy 34 and 23. The ones you listed are all fantastic, though. |
Futures
12.13.24 | thanks brother appreciate you sharing. i prefer dm with a little extra something as you can see from my choices haha. 23 looks great in particular hope it's like planetary duality. |
Veldin
12.13.24 | Been loving 7 so much! 1-3 and 5 are also some of my favorites. Great list mate! |
Veldin
12.13.24 | I love how you categorized this! Just added 4 of these albums to my list of jams this weekend. Thanks! |
NexCeleris
12.13.24 | "hope it's like planetary duality."
On a surface level, that was the first comparison that came to mind when I first listened to it. There's definitely moments reminiscent of that one. However, it does have some deathcore undertones, changes tempo more often and overall feels a lot less show-off-y than PD, for lack of a better term. Also, Hawks dug it, so it can't be that similar ig. |
Futures
12.13.24 | oh hell yeah sounds dope, love tempo changes in dm. and hawks is a fickle man, michael keene probably sold him some bad weed or some shit. |
NexCeleris
12.13.24 | @Veldin: Weird how Ontology of Nought got so little attention around its release. Appreciate the kind words. |
DType
12.14.24 | Nice list, looks interesting, gonna check some of these |
