I Wish I Could Do That

Albums that accomplish a certain feeling or mood that I would love to be able to imitate in my own music.
1Protest the Hero
Kezia

EPIC -- So many of the songs on Kezia have big emotional outros that can only be described as epic. In
fact, the ending of Turn Soonest to the Sea alone would qualify this album for this list, but Kezia also has
the beautiful Divine Suicide of K., which is epic in its entirety.
2At the Drive-In
Relationship of Command

ENERGY -- I have never heard a band that sounds like it truly loves making music more than ATDI, and
this album is a masterpiece of passionate energy. I actually find Cedric's vocals here more fun to listen to
than most of his work with the Mars Volta; sure, he's a much better singer now, but he put so much more
soul into his vocals here.
3Neutral Milk Hotel
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

SIMPLICITY -- This is probably one of the simplest recordings ever to get a major release, and that quality
is exactly what makes it so endearing. There's a certain intimacy in the fact that most of these tracks are
centered around nothing more than a guy playing some simple guitar chords and singing. Some of these
songs are among the most beautiful I've ever heard, and the melodies, which are also very simple, are
incredible.
4Say Anything
...Is a Real Boy

HONESTY -- Max Bemis is one of the most brutally honest lyricists around. He knows how to start songs in
ways that really grab the listener's attention ("Shit! Nothing makes sense!", as well as the opening of
"Every Man Has a Molly"), and his sarcastic delivery combine to, in part, make ...Is a Real Boy such a
fantastic album.
5Mr. Bungle
California

DIVERSITY -- Although California is actually the least diverse Mr. Bungle album, I think it pulls off its
diversity better than the other two. We have surf pop, rockabilly, eastern metal, Gregorian chant, funk,
and lounge, to name a few, and Goodbye Sober Day is one of the most all-over-the-place songs I've ever
heard. And yet, despite all the variety, California flows like an album.
6Devin Townsend
Ocean Machine

PRODUCTION -- Ocean Machine is the very definition of "overproduced." And I absolutely love it. The
album is massive, with layers and layers of instruments, and the whole thing is so huge that it's
overwhelming at times. I took a music production class over the summer, and my teacher was blown
away when I showed him "Life."
