02.11.14 | 3, 13, and 17 are 5s for me right now. The rest have five potential for me.
EDIT: NONE OF THESE ARE CLASSICS. THE LIST IS IRRELEVANT. |
larrytheslug
02.11.14 | is this "universally considered 5" just by sputnik? cause if not, then probably just 9 and 11. never forget |
Calc
02.11.14 | literally none of these except maybe kendrick |
Keyblade
02.11.14 | Definitely none of these |
snowbbird
02.11.14 | Probably should have clarified that, but that's what I meant. And I agree, those are the only albums that will probably be called classics universally. |
snowbbird
02.11.14 | What is on your list? |
climactic
02.11.14 | the only one here going down as a classic is probably 9 |
larrytheslug
02.11.14 | mmm.. closest for me is deathconsciousness |
Keyblade
02.11.14 | Yeah that and Colored Sands |
treeqt.
02.11.14 | none
list is retarded |
snowbbird
02.11.14 | @treeqt this is my list for me. I want to know what albums YOU think will be considered a 5. |
treeqt.
02.11.14 | I SAID NONE CAN YOU FUCKING READ HOLY SHIT IT'S NOT THE LIST IT'S YOU |
treeqt.
02.11.14 | hope that was clear enough :^) |
snowbbird
02.11.14 | Lol fine. I find that kind of hard to believe though. There isn't a SINGLE modern album that you think will or should be looked backed at as a classic? |
treeqt.
02.11.14 | oh there are albums that i think will be looked back at as a classic and there are albums that i think should be looked back at as a classic but there are no albums that universally will be looked back at as a classic |
tempest--
02.11.14 | none of these thats for sure |
PunchforPunch
02.11.14 | 10 years from now KILL and sonic will 5d some of these albums |
treeqt.
02.11.14 | kill is stupid but he isn't retarded |
Kman418
02.11.14 | this list of my fucking god |
treeqt.
02.11.14 | or the other way around idk haven't talked to him in a while |
tempest--
02.11.14 | sorry punchy but thats afuckin dumb comment because kill hasnt even 5d anything after like 97 |
PunchforPunch
02.11.14 | "kids from 2023 are lame af bet they never heard of jane doe smh, chode, etc." |
snowbbird
02.11.14 | Clearly I don't. And treeqt I agree. I probably should have worded this differently. What albums are you thinking? I want to know! That's why I asked! |
snowbbird
02.11.14 | I could see that. If Danny Brown keeps dropping great stuff, gets more exposure, and his influence is
seen in the rap community, I think it could easily be regarded as one. |
postrockpaperscissor
02.11.14 | lol at 11 |
climactic
02.11.14 | lol at 11 but not 4, 12, 13? |
snowbbird
02.11.14 | Yeah this list is lol. Oh wait...
|
snowbbird
02.11.14 | Btw, I never said any of these will be classics or are classics. I think these have some classic/5 potential in my eyes. Nobody is answering my question. |
avonbarksdale221
02.11.14 | when a modern album has a rating in the 4.2-4.3 range I think that, had it been released in the 70's then its rating would be closer to 4.5. |
treeqt.
02.11.14 | idk what do you consider modern. i don't have anything pre 2002 5ed so i guess all of them. |
grish
02.11.14 | 'smh another dg hater'
:( |
Rowan5215
02.11.14 | 15 is already a 5 so |
avonbarksdale221
02.11.14 | 9 will be for sure. |
snowbbird
02.11.14 | I agree that nine will be for sure, but the list is irrelevant. What albums do you think are worthy? |
snowbbird
02.11.14 | @roman5215 it's almost a five for me but not quite. I'm lucky enough to live in their home state, so they play here a good amount. I'm incredibly excited to seeilluminate in full on the 28th. |
avonbarksdale221
02.11.14 | Like I said before, most more recent albums that have ratings within the 4.2-4.3 albums. Funeral, The Moon and Antarctica etc |
Rowan5215
02.11.14 | I would've agreed with you like two months ago or so, but that album really just gets better with every listen and eventually I realised I love every song there. Holy shit dude I am SOOO jealous that will be god-tier |
808muzik
02.11.14 | none |
Deathconscious
02.11.14 | im sure most of the national records will be seen as classics years down the road. |
avonbarksdale221
02.11.14 | oh fo sho |
treeqt.
02.11.14 | you must be quite the misanthrope |
snowbbird
02.11.14 | Yeah I figure that I might eventually five it, hence why I threw it in this list. And holy shit it will be ridiculous! To make it even better it's at the venue that sounds the best in the Phoenix area (in my opinion) on a Friday night. Shall be a legendary night. |
avonbarksdale221
02.11.14 | I can say with near certainty that you will dig the moon and antarctica massively. |
Wadlez
02.11.14 | Choirs of the Eye/Bath |
snowbbird
02.11.14 | Awesome! I'm stoked. |
iswimfast
02.11.14 | of these? just 9. |
snowbbird
02.11.14 | List is irrelevant. What other ones? |
TwigTW
02.11.14 | That is a great question.
Definitely: Kurt Vile – Walkin on a Pretty Daze
Probably:
ASC --Time Heals All
Sigur Ros - Kveikur
Janelle Monae – The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III of IV) |
zakalwe
02.11.14 | The inventiveness, power of rebellion, reflection of social consciousness and all the other nonsense that contribute to an albums classic status is forever lost to the instant download generation.
Stunning albums are still being released but they haven't got the necessary bells and whistles to consolidate themselves in history.
|
treeqt.
02.11.14 | xD |
avonbarksdale221
02.11.14 | zak hitting the nail on the head as per usual. |
PunchforPunch
02.11.14 | " instant download generation."
proud to be here |
GnarlyShillelagh
02.11.14 | 9 and 11 are the only important albums here, mayyyyyyyyyyybe 17 could but idk. |
snowbbird
02.11.14 | Zak you have a great point. I think it's that and major labels paying to ram certain songs down listeners throat, so that these
certain songs are the only ones played and exposed, while many albums and bands who deserve exposure much more than
"what sells" are neglected and ignored. Will there ever classics like Led Zeppelin IV who cemented themselves into history?
It's hard to say but probably
not to the same degree. I think classic records will always exist if you look hard enough however. |
GnarlyShillelagh
02.11.14 | I disagree with you Zak. I think that the 'instant download generation' has diluted things and made
those factors that were so critical to an album's classic status in the past less noticeable, but
that doesn't mean that it's not possible for a newer album to be deemed a classic; if anything it
just raises the bar - an album has to be truly impressive to captivate the hordes of impatient
listeners who are content to toss albums away after only half of a pathetic, cursory listen. That's
why I believe albums like MBDTF and GKMC (just noting these bc they're on the list) will have
longevity: because they're so impressive and different that they have been able to been so
captivating and, to a degree, innovative.
Stunning albums don't have the same bells and whistles, now they have upgraded bells and shriller
whistles. |
ExcentrifugalForz
02.11.14 | tallest man on earth |
SAPoodle
02.11.14 | For me, Sunbather and The Seer are the closest. |
SharkTooth
02.11.14 | Marshall Mathers LP, Good Kid M.A.A.D. City, Songs For The Deaf, the Kyuss pair, (not really sure about 16, it just seems to be a very good collection of battle raps), I am quite sure that the latest Daft Punk album will have some prominent recognition in the future. |
TheSpirit
02.11.14 | Lady gaga - artpop |
climactic
02.11.14 | 3 will be remembered tbh. i dont know how though |
Relinquished
02.11.14 | 3 will mark the time when metal turned PINK |
snowbbird
02.11.14 | Lol, but probably. As I've stated multiple time this list is irrelevant. What albums do you think should be remembered as a classic? |
climactic
02.11.14 | cosmogramma |
Lettuce
02.11.14 | I agree on the Marshall Mathers LP, i also think MBDTF will probably be looked back on fondly just because of how well done it was. |
snowbbird
02.11.14 | Interesting choice. I'll have to give that a more extensive listen. |
SharkTooth
02.11.14 | I really don't know if anyone will remember the Death Grips |
laughingman22
02.11.14 | This is a very good question. I would love to see my two most recent 5's ,Coil-the ape of naples (2005) and Boris-Feedbacker(2003), to become all-around classics but they are a bit too inaccessible.
Maybe 'lateralus' or 'program music I' will become future classics |
Tunaboy45
02.11.14 | Definitely not 13. Captain we're sinking would be here if more people listened to them. |
DrHouseSchuldiner
02.11.14 | Vespertine
Kid A
Lateralus
Leaves Turn Inside You
The Argument
Dopethrone
Oceanic |
Tunaboy45
02.11.14 | Kid A is already a 5 |
DrHouseSchuldiner
02.11.14 | 4.3 for me |
DikkoZinner
02.11.14 | Incantation - 1st 3 albums |
snowbbird
02.11.14 | I enjoy Captain We're Sinking, but I'm not sure The Future Is Cancelled is 5 worthy in my opinion at least. Maybe it will be over time. |
zakalwe
02.11.14 | I take heart in nobody mentioning TDaG
Some more bored commuting banter. Ready......
If we take ten year cycles and their culturally significant 'classic' albums that remain timeless and personal preference isn't a
factor then:
60 - 70 (too many to mention, Dylan or Beatles possibly)
70 - 80 (same but Darkside is the one that is still blowing minds, often referred to as the greatest and still ridiculously popular)
80 - 90 (countless metal, hip hop, alt rock masterpieces. Thriller)
90 - 00 (Nevermind, Electronic classics, early 90s hip hop stormers. Eminem, OK Computer)
00 - 10 (Is This It? Kid A, we're beginning to struggle now it's all beginning to unravel)
10 - .. (?????) but that is not to say "classics" haven't been created it's just that due to reasons mentioned above they won't
have that "mass appeal" retention factor. |
porch
02.12.14 | rolling stone-style canons of untouchable classics are responsible for countless people with boring tastes and shouldnt be relevant in an era where people have access to such a diverse amount of music. if there's less groupthink now it's a good thing |
Skoj
02.12.14 | Burial's Untrue. That's it.
From the list, Sunbather and Money Store have the best potential, but people throw 5s around here like it's nothing. |
AngelofDeath
