05.07.16 | Jade Warrior = 1.
Cheers for doing this Friday dude. Sorry for not always being there with the votes but the magic of these things is the new stuff discovered and One man tells another is a quality album. |
Friday13th
05.07.16 | It's okay bro, I know it's the busy time of year. Cool, I think Jade Warrior was absolutely brilliant in parts though uneven. Same as Cressida and Stark Naked.
My favorites were Cantafabule and One Man Tells Another. |
Onirium
05.07.16 | There weren't any particularly strong records on this contest as there had been with Los Jaivas, Yonin Bayashi or Lucifer's Friend, but I think there was, overall, more interesting and memorable discoveries. My personal favourites would be:
1. Pererin
2. Samla
3. Utopia
4. Landberk
5. Phoenix |
manosg
05.07.16 | All hail Jethro, the prog king!
Favorite album was definitely Pererin followed by Savarin.
Also, a big thanks to Friday for organizing the whole thing. |
Jethro42
05.07.16 | CELEBRATIONNNNNNNN hahaha nice pick Friday, and I thank you very much for the tourney.
One thing I've noticed is that each and every albums have their lovely cuts, so I might revisit them all. If I don't name Landberk, here are my fave ones;
1- Phoenix
2- Seven Impale
3- Maltid
4-Blue Effect
5- Too hard to choose one |

05.07.16 | In the court of the prog KIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII-EEEEE-EEE-IIIIIIING AAAAAAAH-AA-UUUUUUUUH |
Jethro42
05.07.16 | Thanks guys for your kind words. It's a pleasure to share music with you all. And my knowledge about prog music is first and foremost due to the fact that I'm curious, and of course, i love the genre more than any kind of music. It helps to always find new discoveries.
I want to thank TWIG cos lately he showed me the ''Misc'' section on ProgArchives. I feel like a child in a toy shop since then. |

05.07.16 | lol getting funky up in here |
Friday13th
05.07.16 | @Onirium yeah, all the albums were at least good or great. We also had a good variety of prog styles. |
Jethro42
05.07.16 | Yeah Friday, for a change haha. The thing is I was searching for a prog sentence and failed. Then I heard in my head ''I'M A FREEEEEE MAN''
I absolutely love these guys. They only have two albums. I think they broke up :/ |
Jethro42
05.07.16 | Cheers to you all! It's my tour, take the drink you want. I raise my glass of grape juice. Health for you and keep on progging P//////// |
Sabrutin
05.07.16 | Personally I was rooting for Cantafabule since the round it came up. Another favorite is Waiters on the Dance, it's a great mood lifter. Also Aria, but that's a given. I'm going to relisten sooner or later to every album to rate what I didn't rate and refresh my memory. I should try to grab a copy of Cantafabule one day.
Thanks Friday for handling the tourney. My submission lost hard but they say it's the journey that counts, sound about right to me.
keep on progging P//////// [2] |

05.07.16 | didn't know u liked funk jethro
That shit actually sounds awesome haha |
Sabrutin
05.07.16 | That link is pretty sweet yes, think you guys could dig this too. It could serve as a good celebration soundtrack too! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtb-wg5Silw
|
Jethro42
05.07.16 | Yeah SirLord, I love this band but I'm not an aficionado of the funk. All I know is some jazz funk bands, but nothing more. Do you know stuff similar to Screaming Headless Torsos??
@Sabrutin, I dig that kind of funk too. I didn't know Toto touched that branch of music. |
bnelso55
05.08.16 | All Hail Jethro! Thanks for heading up this tourney, Friday. I discovered a lot of great music. |
Friday13th
05.08.16 | You're welcome. Glad you guys enjoyed it. Prog on till next time, my friends! |
MeatSalad
05.08.16 | Kinda sucks that I fell out of the weekly voting but life happens i guess. I'm gonna catch up and listen to everything I missed regardless. Grats jethro, feels right that you won one of these. |
Friday13th
05.08.16 | We understand, Meat. Hope these albums bring you the same joy :] |
TwigTW
05.08.16 | Another great tournament . . . I have a lot of new (old) prog to jam. These were my personal faves:
-Samla Mammas Manna - Maltid
-Pascal Duffard - Dieu est Fou
-Landberk - One Man Tells Another
-Phoenix (Romania) - Cantafabule
-Juha Kujanpää - Kivenpyörittäjä (Tales And Travels)
All the albums in the contest were a great listen, so thanks for sharing guys.
|
Jethro42
05.08.16 | Cheers guys. I was surrounded by a bunch of great albums, so it could have taken another turning anytime. And again, I'm happy that Landberk gained additional love here on sputnik.
@Meat, I hope that everything goes well for you despite the circumstance. You still are in my thoughts. |
Friday13th
09.09.17 | It's been a while. Who's up for Prog Tourney #4? Would you all rather psychedelic rock? |
Jethro42
09.09.17 | In the court of the contest KIIIIIIIIIIII-EEEE-INNNNNNG AHHHHH AH-AAAAAAH
So, dear animator, you consider a return in the wonderful world of prog? Count me in! I'm not a psychedelic rock expert, but it would make for a change. Let's hope there will be enough available contestants. One thing is sure, and you probably noticed it, proggers are discreet on sput, since a while. |
Friday13th
09.09.17 | We've been lurking in the shadows for too long haha |
Jethro42
09.09.17 | I have been hiding behind my flute for far too long haha. Meanwhile, all the progheads were scattered everywhere... save on sputnik! |
Jethro42
09.09.17 | Another option I'd suggest you if ever we have enough contestants; modern prog. |
Friday13th
09.09.17 | I've always left it open for modern prog, but don't think enough people would be on board for just modern prog. If I remember correctly, "modern prog is bog" ;) Though I would consider Landberk modern prog and it rules. |
Jethro42
09.10.17 | Yeah modern prog is often considered as faux-prog, but there are lots of great modern prog bands, especially those who flirt with symphonic prog, such as Anekdoten, Dogma, Finisterre, Fabio Zuffanti, Neal Morse, Transatlantic, Karmakanic, Beardfish, Spock's Beard, to name a few... |
MeatSalad
09.10.17 | What would qualify as modern? 1990+? Might be a solid contest |
Jethro42
09.10.17 | Yeah I think you can say so. Before 1990, we got Neo-Prog in the 80s, but I'm not sure where Neo-Prog finishes and where modern prog starts. I think it has correlation between both. Either way, bands on these categories are mostly inspired by the symphonic prog of the seventies, except that they use modern synthesizers and keyboards that are often predominant, so the quality of a neo prog band mostly lies in the use of them keyboards. I prefer by far a Neo Prog band that is influenced by the 70's, over Neo Prog bands directly influenced by other Neo Prog bands. I would say the same for modern prog since it comes nearly from the same source. |
TwigTW
09.10.17 | Count me in! |
Sabrutin
09.10.17 | 90s+ prog could be interesting indeed |
SCREAM!
09.10.17 | thanks for bumping this. You've got me revisiting quite a few of these that I hadn't heard in a while
As for modern prog, my knowledge is rather limited so I'm not sure I'd have anything to contribute on that end unfortunately :( |
Friday13th
09.10.17 | I think it's best to leave the tourney open to all prog, old and modern. We have had winners from 70s, 80s, and 90s in the four we've had. |
Jethro42
09.10.17 | And also preferably focusing towards nearly unknown, obscure stuff and/or containing less than 30 votes or something. We need some other contestants too... I'll try to convince some proggers to join in. |
SCREAM!
09.10.17 | I could definitely contribute something along those lines if there isn't a time period restriction.
Will likely be something from the 70s again :P |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.10.17 | Ok but when do we get the hard rock contest |
SCREAM!
09.10.17 | prog>>all other rock |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.10.17 | agreed but still |
Jethro42
09.10.17 | I suspect you would choose Rainbow, SirLord :D
|
MrSirLordGentleman
09.10.17 | Don't think they would qualify as they're fairly popular |
Jethro42
09.10.17 | Fair enough. There are lots of great Stoner rock bands out there with only a few votes I confess. |
SCREAM!
09.10.17 | if it's another prog tourney I have a couple of ideas I could use
if its hard rock I may need to think about it a little |
Friday13th
09.11.17 | Start looking for some prog, y'all. It will be the same as before. Albums with 20 votes and under, no duplicates from the past four tourneys, and hopefully 16 slots.
Edit: in other words, be ready by tomorrow lol |
SCREAM!
09.11.17 | my body is ready |
Jethro42
09.11.17 | Up to now, I've accumulated 10 potential candidates. They will show up here. In case we're not enough, I would have 9 others left, so we should reach the obligatory 16 slots. |
Piglet
09.11.17 | would Picchio dal Pozzo - self titled be obscure enough |
Divaman
09.11.17 | I feel like this is a speakeasy: knock, knock -- what's the password? -- Jethro sent me. Anyway, I'm in. Just let me know what we're doing. |
Friday13th
09.11.17 | @Piglet yup, perfect.
@Divaman I'll post the list in a few hours. It will be essentially the same as my last tourney, so check the rules on the "Preliminary" list. |
Jethro42
09.11.17 | Piglet, damn right, good choice! You're the first to choose one so far :)
Divaman, I'm not sure if I understand...Was my message all right? lol
Say it in French please...
jk |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.11.17 | Damn, don't know if I'll participate since I haven't checked too much new music in like a year
Does a live album count if the live album is the band's most recognized release? |
Friday13th
09.11.17 | @Gentleman Sure, as long as it otherwise fits the criteria. I won't allow live albums of popular bands though, since that would defeat the purpose of being unknown/obscure. |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.11.17 | Yeah sure, it only has 9 votes so don't worry
In that case I'm in |
SCREAM!
09.11.17 | "Divaman, I'm not sure if I understand...Was my message all right? lol
Say it in French please..."
Je me sens comme dans un "speakeasy" (c'est quoi le terme francais pour cela?): cogne, cogne --mot de passe?-- C'est Jethro qui m'envoit--- |
SCREAM!
09.11.17 | boredom made me do it |
zakalwe
09.11.17 | Woah!!!! Friday is the man. |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.11.17 | gib list |
Jethro42
09.11.17 | @SCREAM, Divaman explained to me in details in my shoutbox what he meant with that story. Thanks anyway, bro :) |
Friday13th
09.11.17 | ...and we're off! |
TwigTW
09.11.17 | @ MrSirLordGentleman - Live album, 9 votes: if it's what I think it is, you've got my vote already!
I might add a live album myself, since that's allowed. I didn't know that. |
Jethro42
09.11.17 | @Friday, you don't wait until we are 16 contestants??? |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.11.17 | just the preliminary jethro, as always, contestants tend to appear once that list is created
@Twig I think you guessed it right hehe |
Jethro42
09.11.17 | Oh I see...And if ever it's hard to compile 16 persons, I still have 8 other potential contestants at the bank. |
Friday13th
09.11.17 | haha still got 10 to go, we've got time. |
TheSpaceMan
09.12.17 | hey guys, dropping by. whats up? too late to get in on things/what are the official rules? |
TheSpaceMan
09.12.17 | oops just saw the new list. apologies |
smaugman
09.12.17 | what kind of prog do we want? personally, modern prog tend to have a higher chance of sounding gay, but i mean there's still kick ass shit. maybe people can rec more instrumental shit? agreed that the prog tournaments need more psychedelic rock. the band gandalf got a cool psych sound, and also some baroque pop stuff like the zombies |
