Review Summary: Morbid beginnings

Although Morbid Angel are undeniably a major influence on death metal, it's not very common to stumble upon contemporary bands emanating their style. This is mainly for aesthetic and practical reasons. For a young musician, it is certainly easier to clone Incantation, Bolt Thrower, or Entombed, than to recreate the intricacies of Trey Azagthoth's formula. Without wanting to diminish the relevance of the aforementioned collectives, it is an understandable, pragmatic choice. As you've probably guessed by now, Texans Malignant Altar have chosen the morbid path, proudly displaying their admiration for Morbid Angel on their debut album, Realms of Exquisite Morbidity. Nevertheless, it is important not to confuse reverence with cloning, as they are two different things. Even though the influence of Florida's death metal gods is all too evident, Malignant Altar infuses their music with an extra layer of filth that gives it a distinct character, much like a child born of two fathers. As if Trey Azagthoth had joined forces with John McEntee and a talented drummer, unleashing a malignant hybrid creature. The five tracks (plus an ambient) are thus one big riff manifesto that swings between intricate power chords and filthy tremolo picking, roaming mostly slow, mid-paced territory. And while the death metal horde has plenty to feast on, it should stay for the final course, as 'Rite of Krasue', with its colossal ending section, will ensure nobody leaves with an empty stomach today.

It's basically an extended soundoff, a formula that I'll probably be using more often.

The album delivers some of the best riffs of 2021. Morbid Angel's horde should take a peek.

It will be out this Friday, but the full streaming is already available at:

My next one should be similar.

The drumming is easily one of the album's highlights. Awesome performance

Nah, I don't think I'll bother with that again. Spent way too much time here, anyway.

But in case you'd like to know, this is definately a 4. Fuck yeah! ;-)
