Advent Sorrow As All Light Leaves Her |
Based on the album cover I was expecting some brutal, freakish, Gnaw Their Tongues style raw black metal, but
that isn't exactly what As All Light Leaves Her is. This is actually a pretty versatile and varied album, with
moments that feel like Lantlos or maybe even Deafheaven, put right up against spots that sound as tortured
and terrifying as a project Leviathan; and when I say spots & moments, I mean that those parts are put next to
each other in the same song, and amazingly it doesn't create any kind of musical whiplash. Advent Sorrow
covers a LOT of musical bases on here, and it's honestly an amazing surprise. If you're a fan of ANY black
metal style, I influence you to listen to this; the band does everything from symphonic to depressive to
traditional 2nd wave to post-black, and it all sounds great. The vocals even vary quite a bit, from high pitched
Burzum-style shrieks to standard black metal wretches to parts that feel a little death metal influenced.
EDIT: This is also way way way way WAY better than their EP. If you tried that and didn't like it try this, it sounds
like a completely band and it is so much more interesting. |

One of the most mindbending and genuinely freakish death metal albums to come out in awhile. This is how tech death should be done; murky, Rubik's cube-ish, and evil. |

KEN mode Success |
Success is completely different from every other KEN Mode album; this is waaaaaaay noisier and abrasive. It's total Jesus Lizard and other similar '80s & '90s noise rock band worship, but they pull it off EXTREMELY well. If you're into anything Steve Albini has been involved with or really noisy post-hardcore, you'll like this. It doesn't sound like the same band, and I really hope they continue on this road on their next LP. If you listen to just a few songs off of this, I strongly recommend either Blessed, I Just Liked Fire, The Owl, or Dead Actors (which sounds strikingly like Slint). |

Krallice Years Past Matter |
Krallice Ygg Huur |
Slightly disappointed at how short this is compared to their other albums, but this is still exactly what you'd want from a Krallice album. Dense, cacophonous, sporadic, and head splitting. Also nice to see the screams coming back more; I like the howls but it's good to have some variation in the vocals. |

All the reviews that have come out so far have labeled this is as one of the most disgusting and depraved death
metal albums to come out in awhile. That's 100% accurate; this thing is as filthy as the cover art. As someone
who tends to shy away from the more overproduced death metal that comes out today (that does not just mean
technical/melodic/progressive stuff, that includes bands like Abysmal Dawn who lose all their edge from the
recording), this is exactly what I want in a modern death metal release. It's nothing new by any means, but the
brutality on display here is undeniably well done, and adds up to a pretty fantastic listen. There is a bit of songs
blurring together, but there are differences and memorable moments outside of the ugliness of the entire
package. |

It's Beirut as you'd expect them at this point to be. Leaning more towards pop than gulag at this point, catchy
mumbly vocals, and a pleasant sound. I wish the album was a LOT longer than it is (seriously? 4 years and we
get 30 minutes of music), but for what it is, it's good. |

I don't get why everyone's been hating the production on this. The guitars feel pummeling, the bass is audible, Tardy's vocals aren't overpowering, and the drums hit hard. The only real problem I see with it is that the bass drums are a bit loud. And as for the generic thing, as someone who didn't grow up with Obituary the riffs sound great to me. |
