Wildy ambitious, but falls over itself. Lyrics questionable at times, but also has some of Green Day's best songs - Before the Lobotomy (the only time they've done 7/8!), the Viva La Glorias, Murder City (although both big Letterbomb rip offs). There is big pop cheese factor on here as well with 21 Guns and Last Night on Earth, but I don't mind some cheese. This was a very influential album for me in high school so have a 4. |

This is an amazingly solid record musically (faves: Bitter Suite 3 and Black Sandy Beaches). But upon re-listening, some of the lyrics are not good (Red Hands), I think Casey has acknowledged this though which is something. |

Yes a lot of this record is mediocre (Only Us, and of course Hold Up a Light). But I found the production more interesting in comparison to TBEITBN, and more standout tracks that I keep coming back to (Beyond the pines, Just breathe). Dustin's simplistic lyrical approach is very hit or miss with this. Perhaps 4 is too high of a rating, but It's mainly fueled by those two songs. A Branch in the River, My Soul, Everybody's Golf and Blood on Blood are great as well, despite some very bland lyrical choices. Personally there is something special about this album for me (maybe because it came out days after a baad breakup). |
