Joanna Newsom Ys
Me - Hey Joanna what are you doing?

Joanna - Oh I'm writing music.

Me - Well gee it sounds really good, the orchestration really adds to the fullness of the sound, and your voice is one of the most interesting sounding things I've ever heard.

Joanna - Yeah I know.

Me - Well you don't have to be such a jerk about it.

Joanna - Go away.

Stars of the Lid And Their Refinement Of The Decline
So this album is basically a collection of tones that fade in and out, and a lot of silence and near silence. Also, the tones are made by real instruments, like violins and horns, as well as electronic instruments like keyboards and synthesizers. Also, it is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard. Also, the production is absolutely fantastic in allowing the instruments to have a free and uncluttered sound with lots of space between them. Also, they name their songs things like "December Hunting For Vegetarian Fuckface." Also, it is the best album of 2007, and probably one of my favorites of all time. Alright that's all.

Hala Strana Heave The Gambrel Roof
This album came in CD form, in a normal case and such, as well as in freaking hardcore form. What exactly does that consist of, you ask? Well, 250 copies of this were made with wood cases, the picture and song titles engraved right into it. And, amazingly, the music is still better than the packaging. Hala Strana rely heavily on Indian style ragas and drones, but done up in a more "traditional" (I use the word very loosely) way. The songs are all absolutely beautiful, and never get repetitive, though they seem that they should. The distorted guitars and keyboards drift aimlessly on the first listen, but gain shape and obvious structure the more times you come back to the album. The Shins won't change your life. Hala Strana? Find out for yourself.

Battles Mirrored
Beep boop badop bop boop. That's the sound computers make. You know that. Now imagine some kind of freak human computer walking down the street singing a song through it's cold and malformed freak human computer mouth. That's the sound Battles makes. Can't imagine it? Well you'll just have to listen to Mirrored then, which isn't too bad of a punishment considering it is an absolutely original and amazing record, filled with sounds no one has ever heard before.

Juana Molina Son
If you listen to only one Hispanic singer-songwriter influenced by the more textural and repetitive elements of ambient electronic music as well as more direct and listenable classic folk music this year, Juana Molina is your woman. She pumps out the music like some sort of Spanish robot that can't control whether it actually sings or just makes guttural noises on different pitches. And to top it all off, Son is much better than I've made it sound in this review. Go get it now.

Matthew Dear Asa Breed
From the first tribal beats of "Fleece On Brain," Matthew Dear sucks you into his bizarre world of low baritone voices harmonizing with scraggly high falsettos, beats that could be from ancient sacrificial rituals, and a whole lot of fun. That's the word that best describes Asa Breed - Fun. It's fun to hear Matthew Dear's somewhat ridiculous voice singing what are essentially pop songs, and it's fun to always be trying to guess what comes next. Only very occasionally dull, Asa Breed is one of the first albums I've heard this year that always has something interesting going on.
Menomena Friend And Foe
Upon clicking the "Explain Your Rating" button, I am told that my explanation has to be at least 120 characters. If I was like Menomena, I would find a way around that and type - GET READY FOR THIS - less than 120 characters. This is because Menomena are always finding ways to break the rules of conventional songwriting and instrumentation, and are just generally crazy. Nonsensical lyrics but serious music make for a ridiculously fun album that just may be one of the best "indie rock" records of 2007.

3.5 great
Apse Spirit
Apse are an extremely dark and grungy post-rock group, the roots of the music planted firmly in horror movie soundtracks and repetitive Indian ragas. The drums pound, the guitars (at least I think they're guitars) make weird noises and stuff, and the monotone vocals ramble on and on. And for some reason, it's extremely enjoyable. Something different in the monotonous world of post-rock, Spirit is a breath of fresh air.
Gang Gang Dance God's Money
Giants They, The Undeserving
Giants can easily be compared to Explosions In The Sky, but there's no real reason for it. This is because Giants are seriously 12000 times better than EITS. Seriously. More explosive, more dynamic, more thought out, more intelligent. Anything EITS do, take that and imagine it better - then you've got an idea of what Giants sound like.
Joanna Newsom Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band
This is just more of Joanna Newsom doing what she does best - being a complete freak. Her voice twists and turns its way around every one of these songs, sounding quite good in the new Appalachian folk context of the music. Colleen, the sole new song, is just as good as anything Newsom has ever done, and provides a good outlook for her future as a singer-songwriter-orchestra fronter-harp player.
Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings 100 Days, 100 Nights

3.0 good

Blitzen Trapper Wild Mountain Nation
There's something a little bit wrong with Blitzen Trapper. They sound like a country-rock Pavement, with plenty of jaw harp and messy distorted guitar to go around. And with that setup, a bad album is pretty hard to make. Blitzen Trapper come pretty darn close. Songs meander into long fits of dullness, and never seem to come back to the original promising bits. There's a lot of potential in this band if they can just pull their act together long enough to create one very solid song.
Modill Midnight Green
Modill does what he does well. He's got a good flow, good beats, good ideas, and good energy. And that's it. Nothing on Midnight Green ever surpasses the level of "good" that Modill seems so comfortable at. Glitchy pianos and guitars are sampled behind his smooth vocals. Oh, and the guest spots? Yeah, those are good too. If you want a hip-hop album that defines the word good, look no further than Modill's Midnight Green.
Nomo New Tones
This album sounds way better in 30 second samples on iTunes. The main reason for this is because the songs are pretty much the same 30 second bits repeated over and over, with minimal change, for upwards of five minutes. Sure, it's funky, and sure, the horn players and bassist are fantastic, and sure, the drums that show up sometimes always provide some nice beat, but it never becomes anything. The songs (except for the Joanna Newsom cover and Sarvodaya) are static, and that's not enough in a genre where repetition could mean the death of the band.
The Lawrence Arms The Greatest Story Ever Told

2.5 average
A Hawk And A Hacksaw The Way The Wind Blows
A Hawk And A Hacksaw try too hard. It seems like they want to be Greek or Eastern European (or whatever that style of music Beirut plays is called) so badly that they forgot they had to write songs too. As it is, these are a bunch of directionless songs with lots of accordion and crappy-sounding violin. There are the occasional flashes of brilliance, like the chant during the first few minutes of the opening song and bits of string-based beauty scattered about, but it's not enough to carry a whole album.
Neutral Milk Hotel In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
So...this is supposed to be really good or something. But it's not. Jeff Mangum's voice leaves much to be desired in terms of emotional value and just plain vocal ability. His acoustic guitar sounds are the most plain-sounding things on earth. When he adds other instruments it just sounds ridiculous, especially the mariachi band on just about every other song. The only thing keeping In The Aeroplane Over The Sea going is the song quality. Holland, 1945 and King Of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1, as well as the title track are all fantastically written. It's a shame the rest of the album doesn't even come close.
