A dim-witted model/merman once said, "Moisture is the essence of wetness, and wetness is the essence of.....beauty."
I suppose he was right, because this, being one of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard, is soaked in brilliance. Brilliant lyrics, brilliant riffs, brilliant, emotional screaming. It may take a few listens to finally understand and digest all of the brilliance, but once you've accomplished this, there is no turning back.

Brand New The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me
Sometimes there's an album you identify with too deeply. You forget that you didn't write the lyrics, the music, or anything els. But you felt the album inside you for years before it really came out. Even years after it came out you didn't truly recognize it. But now you do. And now you realize all those moments you spent singing along/shouting along/screaming along you were contributing something to the album posthoumously. And that is what music is about so keep doing that.

MF Doom's slightly-stoned flow and Madlib's carefree production match up perfectly on this "little" collaboration. However, from time to time, all of the album's carelessness translates to slightly boring for the listener, but Doom's lyrical expertice in pop culture references and snack food indulgances always brings the listener back.

Off Minor Some Blood
Remember last year when Hot Cross released Risk Revival, a collection of their most technical/least passionate songs to date. Well I'm sure Off Minor took note of what had happened to their fallen comrades and decided it was best for them to stay true to themselves and not release anything to ambitious like a release topping 30 minutes. Some Blood keeps it short and sweet with 6 songs that add up to 22 minutes and one 8 minute track that could be considered the best song of Off Minor's career. If they do break up after this as many have speculated, at least they did it in style.

Hey what's up my name's Tim Kasher. I'm pretty self-aware and I like to put myself down. Actually, I'm not really self-aware, it's more like I'm self-obsessed. In fact, the only thing I know is myself, I don't really like to pay attention to anything else because nobody can reach the perfect equilibrium between flawed and beautiful that I have obtained. Would you like to hear me sing about myself?

Darkest Hour The Eternal Return
As I'm sure everyone knows, I'm not really a metalhead. When I do choose to listen to metal I tend to gravitate towards bands with a certain atmosphere (Wolves in the Throne Room) or bands that are extremely heavy/brutal/etc. (Converge, Harvey Milk, and I'm not sure if most people consider grind to be metal, but I think they're close enough). "Great riffs" were never really enough for me to like an album, and I'm not really sure why, but the riffs on this album really stick out to me and I don't know if that means I'm turning over a new leaf or if the riffs on this album really are great or if the production is just a lot better than other riff-based albums I've listened to, but whatever the reason, this albums slays.

Kanye West 808s and Heartbreak
My roommate listens to a lot of shitty R&B. I'll usually drown it out with my lovely noise-canceling headphones, but sometimes I listen just so I can help myself understand why I hate R&B so much. I've decided that the genre is just so full of itself and really becoming a caricature of what it once was. When he listens to Boyz II Men and the like, I find myself actually enjoying it, but recent R&B annoys me to no end. It seems with recent acts, producers have been competing against each other to see who can cram the most superfluous effects into each song. And the lyrics are so exaggerated and superficial it's hard to not laugh.
808s and Heartbreak is bringing R&B back to basics. Kanye West takes the brash honesty that compelled him to say "George Bush doesn't care about black people" and applied it to simple heartfelt lyrics backed by simple heartfelt beats. The most surprising album of the year without a doubt.

Streetlight Manifesto Everything Goes Numb
Tomas Kalnoky is kind of a god. With his songs composed of thesis-long lyrics and some truly wonderful musicians backing him up, he's managed to create a the perfect ska album. His anti-suicide anthems are epic without sounding preachy and the instrumentation is quite epic as well. With each songs rapid tempo changes and extended lengths, this could be labeled as progressive, but whatever is it labeled, there is no doubt in my mind this is a classic album.

Look, I'll tell you a story, all right? I once feel deeply, you know, profoundly in love
with tropical fish. Had 60 goddamn fish tanks in my house. I skin dived to find just the
right ones. Anisotremus virginicus, Holdacanthus ciliaris, Chaetodon capistratus. You name
it. Then one day I say, "fuck fish". I renounce fish. I vow never to set foot in that
ocean again. That's how much "fuck fish". That was 17 years ago and I have never stuck so
much as a toe in that ocean. And I love the ocean. Why? Done with fish.

I'm generally not a fan of samples, but fuck me if Trophy Scars don't know how to use them
perfectly.

This album is such delicious pop-punk goodness. From the album opener's upbeat clapping and wailing to the solemn departure there isn't a moment that you don't want to move around (because not all of us can dance). Oh and get this! The lyrics have some substance as well as they're based on George Orwell's novel Animal Farm, these young gentlemen most certainly do love their literature. This album is most certainly recommended to any fan of music as it transcends many genres to produce a terrific work of art.

I'm not quite sure I understand the greatness of this album. It's probably because I wasn't born until 11 years after it was released, so I'm not sure of all it spawned, but this album is, in all honesty, mediocre. Don't get me wrong, David Gilmour is a superb guitarist and everybody else does a good job on their respective instruments, but the whole concept of the album is really poor. In my opinion, concept albums are supposed to have bite and actually say something, but I'm not sure I really get the message this album is trying to get across. Maybe I'm just overanalyzing it, but this album is not as good as it's made out to be.

The nasal vocals of Max Bemis without the cutting social criticism. The intertwining vocals of Tell All Your Friends without the fun. You'll find your self singing along or tapping your toe or whatever it is you do with a typical pop-punk album but you won't remember it 30 minutes later.

The Fall of Troy Doppelganger
When I first heard the record I was blown away. The riffs were fantastic and when I learned that the guitarist busting how these riffs was also the one singing/screaming out the above average lyrics I was simply amazed. However, after "deeper inspection" despite the terrific riffs and all, they just don't seem to fit, and just seem to try and show off. However, in songs like "F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X." and "Laces Out, Dan!" it all works together perfectly.

Against Me! White Crosses
I have listened to this album and I have foreseen my death: I'll be down in Florida to hang out with Chan and John Hanson. Chan will be working late so I'll go out with John Hanson despite the fact that we fucking hate each other. When we get back to the apartment, I'll be blacked out sitting on a couch and John Hanson will suggest we listen to some music. I'll be too intoxicated to offer a coherent response so I'll be unable to protest when he throws on "White Crosses". Hanson goes in the other room to change and starts espousing some meticulously crafted bullshit rant about the pleasures of conformity as "I Was a Teenage Anarchist" blares. I'll turn around to see Hanson in a lab coat wielding a giant axe over his head and all I'll be able to stammer is "Are you wearing a lab coat". In an effort to make my last moments as excruciatingly ironic as possible, Hanson will wittily retort "Why, yes, didn't you know I are scientists". I'll be utterly filled with dread and loathing and absolute fucking resentment as the axe falls.
