If Hell Songs is a sociopath wearing a straight jacket with a crazy look in his eye, this new effort is that same sociopath ripping of that straight jacket, revealing nothing but a speedo with 'PARTY' in huge letters across it.

Looking at this in comparison to previous efforts of the band is going to cause some disappointment, given the complete genre change. I've found that looking at new releases through a lens of comparison to old releases isn't the best way to approach music. So, taking this for what it is, I can definitely appreciate the new direction.

The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza Danza II: The Electric Boogaloo
Disorganised? Incoherent? You don't have an ear for the style, apparently, because it's irrefutable that these guys put a lot of effort and time into the music. It's not at all lacking of structure, perhaps just lacking of 4/4 timing you can bob your head to.
Branch out a bit, then see if it's a 2.5...

3.5 great
Ahleuchatistas What You Will
Intricate, has flavor in parts. Kind of has a habit of trying to pique the same emotional responses, sort of repetitive in a thematic sense. Obviously that's just them adhering to their style but it can get bland. Not really awe-inspiring.
CocoRosie Coconuts, Plenty of Junk Food
Best vocal interplay of any of their works in my opinion. I haven't exactly listened to them extensively either but they caught my attention most with this release
CocoRosie Grey Oceans

The Chinese Stars Listen to Your Left Brain
Its fun and the vocalist is sweet. The fact that they have a fairly confined structure but can keep one entertained for the entire duration is not so easy to do these days within their genre.

Boring, generic, underwhelming, moot.
Move along folks.

2.0 poor
Kanye West My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
The Fall of Troy In the Unlikely Event
The Mars Volta Octahedron
I'm a fan of all of TMV's previous records. I've managed to see what they're going for on every album and I have given Octahedron the same mindset as I would with any new record. However I simply cannot fathom why I should consider this gold like most of the people here. Some areas of this album just drag so hard its almost painful.
Here's TMV trying to be brooding and mysterious (they've tried before, and with more success I would reason) and just being flat. I don't know, maybe I'm not seeing the sheer amazingness beneath it all that people seem to have discovered.
I by no means have any qualms with slow, ballad-esque albums or songs, but this just feels weak.

1.5 very poor
