Metallica Ride the Lightning
While many hold Metallica's Master of Puppets album to be the pinnacle of their career, I am of the firm opinion that Ride the Lighting deserves that distinguished honor. In fact, this album is one of the greatest in the thrash metal genre. This album contains many of Metallica's classics, including "For Whom the Bell Tolls," "Fade to Black," "Creeping Death," and the magnificent instrumental "Call of Ktulu." All members are proficient at what they do - and yes, I mean Lars too. Even though he isn't the most technical drummer, he manages to keep things held together firmly. This album sucks you in from the very beginning with the first note of the acoustic intro to "Fight Fire With Fire," and doesn't let go until the album concludes.
Mudvayne L.D. 50
Mudvayne has managed to create something beautiful here. This CD showcases their songwriting abilities with in your face metal songs like Dig and Under My Skin to haunting melodies like Cradle and Nothing to Gein. Ryan Martinie really shines through with easily the best bass playing to grace the nu-metal scene and other genres. Though that doesn't mean the others don't shine through. Matt provides many interesting fills and beats, and Greg manages to make some quality riffs despite the bass-driven sound. Chad Gray's vocals shine through as well, showing off some versatility with his screaming and singing. His lyrics touch many different subjects as well besides the typical "Screw you!" focus of others in his genre. The point is, this is an album well worth looking at, despite the nu-metal tag its been given.

Memento Beginnings
It is hard to say all the good things this band does. Excellent musicianship all around, and they're fronted by a powerful vocalist. Their songs convey a lot of emotion, from the guitar solos to the haunting vocals, and to the strings and piano that are used sparingly throughout the album. Excellent songwriting as well, whether it's the heavier songs like "Nothing Sacred," the acoustic songs such as "Begginnings," or the hauntingly beautiful songs such as "Stare," Memento manages to keep things interesting. This is evident on the album's closer, the thirteen-minute epic, "Figure 8" which contains acoustic guitars, piano, guitar solos, and even a cello solo and they manage to fit all of that together so well you won't realize the song you're listening to is nearly thirteen minutes long

Mastodon have truly done it. The follow-up to the acclaimed Leviathan is a truly wonderful album. The musicianship is great and the songwriting is superb. The album even has a slight progressive feel to it, which is clearly evident in the song "Siberian Divide." It may not be a perfect album, but there is something here every listener will enjoy. Suggested tracks: "The Wolf is Loose," "Sleeping Giant," "Capillarian Crest," and "This Mortal Soil."
