Elliott Smith XO
This album proves that in the world magic CAN happen, as long as you ignore the sad and distressing consequence that stems from it. Even in its happiest moments, this electro-acoustic ballet has a melancholy-like wrapping on it due its sense of desperation, isolation and emotion put in directly by Elliott Smith himself. This album proves that not only can magic exist, but it can also be beautiful.

A brilliant debut album by someone who sadly still remains pretty unknown, which is a complete shame because I find this is what Jeff Buckley would end up sounding like if he went insane and NASA decided to fire him into orbit for a week by himself with nothing but food, water and many instruments.
Also, it's nice to note that this album doesn't go in a single direction, it keeps a broad spread over electronica and the more conventional intstruments. Either way, it's beautiful...

Pretty good, I have to say. Her voice is unique and often really compelling, but other times... just eugh. Other than that, it's obvious that Joanna is confident in her harp playing and manages to catch plenty of attention, despite Van Dyke Park's orchesteral arrangements taking up large portions of the album (which, trust me, is a good thing).
For me (and I'm sure many others) the album pushes the idea of folk and creates this truly epic sound that I'm sure Joanna will be able to build on even more in the future.

Patrick Wolf The Bachelor
This album took me by suprise, if purely because of the (in my opinion) subpar 'The Magic Position'. 'The Bachelor' allows Patrick Wolf to take a U-turn and build up on his initial sound, while managing to stay fresh. I truly think 'The Bachelor' deserves to be given a change by more people, especially here on Sputnik as this is without a doubt one of the best releases of the year so far. And Chan is right, 'The Sun Is Out Often' is without a doubt amazing.

A truly brutal combination here: mean guitar work, progressive undertones, catchy melodies and when needed, RAW POWER. Without a doubt, it seems like the sound of The Sound of Animals Fighting (heh) is slowly merging with RX Bandits to create a far more balanced yet inventive sound. I seriously think this is a contender for album of the year.

A Fine Frenzy One Cell in the Sea

With every track, bar three, clocking in at just over four minutes I have to say it is a very consistant album, with no bad song in sight. Sadly the songwriting does lack a bit in the "outstanding" department, but that is quickly forgotten as you're mesmerised by her awesome voice; sexually caressing your ears. It consists of many simple songs, brought to life by an interesting arrangement of instruments. Oh and "You Picked Me" has a helluva catchy chorus.

While the CD kind of feels very overshadowed by the likes of Alive 2007 and the DVD may not have much emphasis on the actual music, but the DVD's documentary has a real sense of charm (just sadly not in a musical kind of way). Radiohead Amnesiac
Underrated by many, in my opinion.
This album carries so much BEAUTY in it and sadly possesses what seems to be the only pure Jazz song from Radiohead. Life in a 'Glasshouse', 'You And Whose Army?' and 'Pyramid Song' really make this album for me! While everything else on the album doesn't quite yell out to me with quite so much uniqueness, it is mainly very tight Radiohead songwriting throughout and this is probably one of their more consistent albums.
With Kid A stepping one way, this almost certainly takes a trip back to memory lane and drops some of the electronica for the more 'classic' Radiohead style.

So brutal that sometimes I feel like DEVIN IS FUCKING COMING OUT MY FUCKING SPEAKERS AND FUCKING PUNCHING ME IN THE SHITTING FACE.
While this album IS awesome, I feel Devin is putting it on a bit... Sure, we KNOW all metal bands don't intend to slaughter babies and rape rooms full of schoolgirls, but I can't help but feel the album is given a shallow feel due to this obvious INTENT to be heavy.
Otherwise, I love it and all the things that make it experimental are just plain awesome.

The Flashbulb Soundtrack to a Vacant Life
The way I look at this album is; so many tracks, so many textures, so much imagination.
Basically, I feel that The Flushbulb has put together a very varied and distinctive album, with tracks leaping from genre to genre everytime it reaches the next one.
For those who aren't aware, Ben Jordan has bipolar disorder and it almost certainly channels his music into something so varied, yet so beautiful.
The Jezabels Synthia
The Mars Volta Live
The Mars Volta The Bedlam in Goliath
The Mars Volta Octahedron
Considering I thought nothing of the leaked songs at first, they began to grow on me... so I'm suspecting the rest of the album will follow suite and I'm reasonably sure my liking of this album will go up!

With Twilight As My Guide currently being my personal highlight of the album, this whole "acoustic" idea (or THEIR idea of acoustic) behind it, it's just becoming a tad tricky to adapt to this new Volta, I guess.

Really, the only track I dislike is Cotopaxi for sounding like it really shouldn't be on the album (sound more like it should be on Bedlam in Goliath than anything else), but everything else is pretty damn solid or good.

Nice to see The Mars Volta have remembered that they are a PROGRESSIVE band... and once again have progressed.

I do think some of the tracks are half decent and thankfully the guys have learnt from their mistake that is "Empire" Although this isn't particuarly that much better, it seems that Sergio has finally been able to settle and do some solid song writing after the loss of their co-writer/bassist Chris Karloff.

While The Sun is a brilliant original track (although it IS later featured on Lovetune for Vacuum) and Janitor of Lunacy is a dark and haunting version of a song by Nico in true Soap&Skin style (and I personally far prefer this cover to the original). On the other hand, Xray Heartland is a yawnfest with no redeeming value what-so-ever and its remix is pretty much the same scenario, although it is marginally better than the original.
While Janitor of Lunacy is a brilliant track, the rest of the EP is a bit of a grind, with one of the songs being on Lovetune for Vacuum and the final two of the tracks being extremely bland.

I want to dig this album, it has some sheer awesomeness scattered here and there, with Walk of Fame and Straight Jacket Keelhauled being two of my personal highlights. It's an interesting progression from Manipulator, this is by far their most poppy album with some really catchy vocals but Waior is DEFINITELY right on Battleship Graveyard, Thom's vocals are VERY off... and this is coming from someone who generally enjoyed his vocals. So the way I see this album (with a shitty analogy), an icecream of catchy vanilla mediocrity with a tasty flake of chocolaty goodness in it.
The Lonely Island Incredibad
I do think it's a pretty standard comedy album that really doesn't work unless you're watching the video... don't get me wrong though, I'm On A Boat is amazing at all times. Ever.

It's pretty damn average with a number of extra-crap songs, literally just some mindless British Pop Punk. While I know shouldn't expect a music experience that would take me through the emotions of life, I was HOPING for some ounce of originality or redemption within this album, but no. Avoid if possible.
