1905 Voice |
Lyrics are reminiscent of System of a Down or La Dispute, seeing as they range between extremely obvious socio-political messages and much deeper, more personal lyrics that often come across as a sociological message anyway. So kind of in between Sunny Day Real Estate, Touche Amore or Brand New and Circle Takes the Square or King Crimson.
Sounds like CTTS with the screams at times, while other times they sound like I Would Set Myself On Fire For You (and CTTS's slightly more melodic segments) when they sing, especially in unison. On the other hand, they manage to mix in songs with guitars that sound almost like Folk music (Folk Punk especially, obviously) and the song A Conversation sounds like something from La Dispute's early work on Hear, Hear.
It's a shame they didn't put out anything more, because in my eyes Voice is a near-perfect album. Unlike so many bands that try to be "intelligent" or "deep," (think Tool and Mastodon) 1905 has the courage to be slightly inventive without lauding their ingenuity as if they're kings of the universe while also focusing on the passion and meanings they put into the music, unlike the plethora of bands that make "honest" music about things that they don't actually care about or that are simply immature and sophomoric (think Taking Back Sunday and post-Pinkerton Weezer). |

I find the fact that the songwriting has once again become somewhat structured an improvement, but the perfect blend of structure and haze was realized with their first album. As brilliant as the conceptualizations and textures are, I wish they would go back to their original sonic aesthetic, at least in terms of how they mix the songs. |

The best parts of Cosmogramma are here, albeit less in the forefront. The album really listens more like Until the Quiet Comes, because the songs are very similar to UTQC and his earlier dance music tonally. However, the structures are much more like Putty Boy Strut or his dancier songs on Cosmogramma than the majority of UTQC. It's got a lot of nuances in the background, but keeps everything fast paced and beat centered. This is easily one of his best works. |

Joseph Andreoli and his wife are FINALLY making original songs as I Am This Big Black Cloud. I liked the covers on CVRS because I love Andreoli's production and his wife's voice fits in with the music very well; however, hearing these I can say his song writing is much better than any of the other groups they covered. Definitely worth a listen. |

Good, but a step back from Plan B. The vocals could have been an awesome addition, but instead they used them to replace the instruments. This would have been alright, but the way Kurt is trying to emulate DGD isn't getting it right. Overall I think the album had too much DGD influence in the vocals, too much La Dispute influence in the guitar, and not nearly enough experimentation. It also lacked the La Dispute/Circle Takes The Square/The Mars Volta style storytelling in the lyrics that it could have had (I felt like I could see them writing lyrics similar to those bands from what I heard on the first album) and the classic ALLB instrumental craziness it could have had.rIn short, they have descended into a lower form of Post-Harcore, and I for one am slightly disappointed. |

I'd give it a 4.5 but because of the large amount of trolls I'm giving it a 5. I think ATRU deserves it's five, although I actually like the general sound of this EP more, it's very incomplete... Therefore if there were less trolls it'd be getting a 4.5. |

Darker than their S/T EP. It's still a bit heavy handed lyrically, although a lot of their thoughts are in the right place. rVery enjoyable for me, would give it a 4 based on how much I like it but objectively it's not really quite a 4. |

I wish they mixed the guitar down and made the other instruments (piano, trumpet, etc) louder in the parts that aren't just solos/breakdowns, but other than that this is pretty interesting and generally well done, although the similarities to scenecore are a bit disconcerting... Especially the similarity to PATD. |

Weed is awesome, right? Well, when your bud buddies get into OMG ILLUMINATI SYMBOLISM and WOW THE FIBBONACCI SEQUENCE SO DEEP it's going to get a bit tiring. So when Tool decided to base their entire aesthetic around this kind of person's ideal, I was a bit skeptical. Turns out, Tool is exactly what they look like; the generic, proto-typical Nu-Metal kids who just SMOKED THEIR FIRST WEED and became "enlightened." Except they make music. For the same kind of person I just described. It's all pretty much Nu-Metal with a psychedelic twist, or from my perspective, a stupid gimmick. |
