Blind Guardian Nightfall in Middle-Earth
Cynthesis DeEvolution
Dream Theater Awake
Haken The Mountain
It is rare to see a band like Haken that manages to evoke such an emotional response with music that is so absolutely sincere, and well constructed that it really defines what music is capable of. Previous albums were already extremely strong entries for Haken and really set the bar high for this English group. However, Haken manages to soar above the bar with The Mountain. The album has no wasted space, no needless technicality, and no element ever feels out of place. This album is a masterpiece and anyone who claims to be a fan of Progressive rock or metal should give this album a try.

Cynthesis ReEvolution
The combination of Erik Rosvold's melodic and emotional vocal work with the amazing guitar and bass work of the Tipton brothers proves to be just as great a success as Cynthesis' first album "Deevolution". Just as with their last album Cynthesis focuses primarily on delivering a story through impressive atmosphere and carefully constructed songs. This is exactly what makes a great Progressive metal album. While we know the Tipton brothers are capable of extremely technical work from their work with Zero Hour with cynthesis the instrumentation is much more restrained; however, the points where the instruments really pick up are carefully timed and prove to be another tool Cynthesis uses to drive the story and deliver on the impressive atmosphere. The attention to the pacing and atmosphere is what really separates this album from the rest.

Lance King A Moment in Chiros
I have always loved King's work since first listening to Legend of the Bone Carver from Pyramaze. A Moment in Chiros is an excellent Progressive-power metal album. The execution is extremely good with strong riffs, bombastic beats, great keyboard work, and King's soaring vocals. The concept is the icing on the cake as I have always found the more thought provoking albums to be the ones that stay with me longest. Anyone who considers themself a fan of Progressive or Power metal should immediately look into this album if they have not already.

Drum fills are somewhat bland compared to Portnoy, but the return of Songwriting taking precedent over technical displays more than makes up for it. BTW ballads are actually well done and dont feel like they have just been tacked on because its tradition.

Opeth Heritage
Extremely underrated, it might not sound like the same Opeth but it is still a powerful album that holds the same complexity that Opeth is known for and still worth listening to occasionally. The only real negative is that it is missing the same fluidity that makes an album worth listening to all the way through.
Pain of Salvation Road Salt One
The shift in style might be jarring for fans of PoS, but Road Salt One is a step up from the preachy and ill conceived Scarsick. Elements of blues along with a more vintage 70's style of Prog rock dominate this album. If one is able to deal with the drastic transition in style from earlier albums a gem of an album is underneath. However, low production values plague this album and really bring down the album which would otherwise be quite excellent.
