Review Summary: Hello there, you're just in time to join our cult!

What qualifies a black metal band? Back in the early days it was a little easier to answer that question. Nowadays? Not so much. Calling Urfaust a black metal band is a bit misleading. Yes, they're rooted in black metal but they are MUCH more than just that and their new album, Untergang, is a glowing example.

Urfaust is a band that incorporates extremely heavy doom and psychedelic influences, and that has always been the case. This isn't even really an album, it's a really weird, dark ritual. Right off the bat you're hit with slow, montrous riffs like something you'd hear on a funeral doom record. The vocals are a mix between ritual chanting, wailing, and groaning and some of the most tortured shrieks you'll ever hear to the point of being uncomfortable. That may not sound appealing to you, the listener, but no other vocal style could fit this album.

If you like odd, suffocating, hypnotic music, Untergang is the album for you. Go in with an open mind and let Urfaust put an everlasting spell on you!

was surprised my metal dealer had this as #1 for August. I need to circle back around to this project for a closer look. Blut has had my windows for ritual black booked solid lately

I like this sweet short writeup!

> This isn't even really an album, it's a really weird, dark ritual.

It is very accurate. Challenging listen, yet very rewarding. This is what modern black metal is all about!

> That artwork is dope.

I need it on a t-shirt. This imagery with the tired devil is oddly "appealing" to me.

This album is quite interesting:

Track 1 - Yob trying to appeal to black metal fans.

Track 2 - Oranssi Pazuzu after too much tripping and red wine.

Track 3 - Leviathan after reaching the 11th Sub-Level of Suicide.

Track 4 - Varg takes psychedelics and writes a piece of music again on the trip.

Track 5 - your avg late 80's post-punk/gothic band hire a black metal vocalist

Track 6 - POV you are practicing your drum patterns after taking acid

Track 7 - Demented neighbour singing orthodox prayers meets depressive metal riff.

If you think I'm joking or exaggerating, well... I'm not, and that's a very good thing actually, this is quite an hypnotic experience

Frost15, you should write a track-by-track review using those analogies, haha!
