Review Summary: Hello there, you're just in time to join our cult!
What qualifies a black metal band? Back in the early days it was a little easier to answer that question. Nowadays? Not so much. Calling Urfaust a black metal band is a bit misleading. Yes, they're rooted in black metal but they are MUCH more than just that and their new album,
Untergang, is a glowing example.
Urfaust is a band that incorporates extremely heavy doom and psychedelic influences, and that has always been the case. This isn't even really an album, it's a really weird, dark ritual. Right off the bat you're hit with slow, montrous riffs like something you'd hear on a funeral doom record. The vocals are a mix between ritual chanting, wailing, and groaning and some of the most tortured shrieks you'll ever hear to the point of being uncomfortable. That may not sound appealing to you, the listener, but no other vocal style could fit this album.
If you like odd, suffocating, hypnotic music,
Untergang is the album for you. Go in with an open mind and let Urfaust put an everlasting spell on you!
