REC ME: WEED šŸ„¦ (October 2023: Chapter 10)

Hi. My name is Ben. I know nothing about Psychedelic music. To educate me, pls rec albums. I will listen to 1 album a day in October 2023. I will then describe the album that I have heard in this list. Kind regards, Ben /// RULES IN FIRST LIST ENTRY THANKS ///
1Psychedelic Porn Crumpets
Shyga! The Sunlight Mound

RULES: Rec me any psychedelic music you want. I have my preferences (see below) but the world is your very high oyster.

BIG YES = Neo-Psych, Psych Folk, Psych Electronic, Very Stoned Rock/Metal, freaky jazz, fucked ambient, anything hazy + ethereal + lo-fi

Everything else = completely fine, BUT i would urge you to reach for weirder, more obscure shit over the CLASSICS. I do not need a list of Pink Floyd and Sgt Pepper clones thank you.

EXCEPTION: no king gizzard pls

NB: We are skipping the 1st as I'm late but we're GUCCI from the 2nd.
2The Incredible String Band
The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter

2nd October 2023 [RYUS]

I was so ready to crowd kill this but damn i actually kinda hug it - proper hippie grade psych folk nonsense yEs. Big contrast from a month without melody, feels like the weightlessness of apex of rollercoaster and the weeeEeeEeeEEeeeEEEEEeee that follows. Quaint oaken imagery, ornate goofy vox, endearing woodsy thematics, many cosy moments, particularly A Very Cellular Song = an insane chain of glistening serotonin giblets. All just a bit magical, made me smile, got choked up at one point, i forget when. Weird.

Trip rating: Peace with friends and a campfire.

I feel like ima overrate this but heck this is just what i was looking for!!! Freeform Raga Rock/Folk. Literally hypnotic i was listening to this standing up in a train station this evening closed my eyes opened them again 15 minutes had passed my train had arrived heck. Transportive, long form, immobile, glorious.

Actual thoughts: I like how this starts with the sparse, delicate, 30 min epic of very slow proportions, then opens up into the 17 min melodic lullaby of sitar and grace, and then the dirty 3 min psych rock closer just PLONKs into existence. Feels rough and ready and ill thought out, but is all the more charming for it.

Apparently I've actually heard their 2018 LP which I did not remember lol but much prefer this - less direct and obvious chunky proggy psych rock and more free spirited joy.

Trip rating: i almost missed my train.

4th October 2023 [MoM]

Rather daft, innit, but kinda works? Heck. Sabbath meets Ghost meets Deep Purple meets kvlt? Something like that. Comes together surprisingly well in that late career Mr Bungle way - the old school heavy metal solos slot in just fine next to the classically inspired piano and puddles of mushrooms thank you very much. Entirely unpredictable, and yet exactly what Iā€™d expect from the worldā€™s first (as I understand it) Japanese black metal band. Stupid goofy fun.

Trip rating: Stag do that starts in Amsterdam and ends in Tokyo.

Album rating: [4] stupid good start to this list jeez

5th October 2023 [TIM]

Thereā€™s something in the juxtaposition of the upbeat/goofy/sparkling bass lines and the unfathomably loud FEEDBACK///REVERB wombo combo that is simultaneously hilarious and also kinda stirring. Conjuring images of sweaty basement guitar mashing acoustics painful and glorious. Fuck itā€™s long tho - not sure Iā€™m qualified to apply rating yet, but Iā€™ll give another spin and weā€™ll return.

Update (06.10.23): very much like, but feel like love will require more time.

Update (12.10.23): keep returning to this and realising i just dont have anything else in the other 2000 albums in my back-pocket that quite scratches the effervescent atmospheric itch that this hits. +[0.3]

6th October 2023 [DAD]

Another cute mishmash: the shoegaze plus the NOISE plus the Sonic Youth circa Modest Mouse nonchalance-stroke-anxiety plus the space-aged-stoned-as-balls tings (*deep breaths*). Completely impenetrable in the sense that songs blur into themselves and one another in steaming psychedelica. Head spinning sauce. Also very LONG. More bongs required.

Update (06.10.23): epic highs, kinda mid lows, all around very pleasurable, my my I do like the sludge this occasionally sinks into.

Trip rating: An iridescent blunt in the shape of the moon.

7th October 2023 [JON]

I have brain ouchies. It is because of the open bar. Bloody matrimony getting in the way of my psychedelics.

This is good soothing handholding calm YES great timing. Patient, warm production guides patient, warm compositions, despite the spacey metallic qualities to the corridors. Clever sequencing, holistic and wholemeal, grainy, thicc, does not feel like 80 minutes but is (why these recs all long help). Right place right time raking in bonus points as a result.

Trip rating: hangover cure.

8th October 2023 [HYP]

Less opportune timing this makes my spinning head spin faster hold on to your chunks boys or we be blowinā€™. The most properly psychedelic anything on this list has felt, reality yanking beep boops, the colours become blotchy, purple orange green yellow. Mostly relaxing. Also over an hour long grrrr I have plans important plans goddamn.

9th October 2023 [MEATsalad]

Old school blue balls banger - we're talking heady proggy hard psych with heart and soul and suprising amounts of girth for 1970. Touch of Floyd / Hendrix, bit of Sabbath, some Captain Beyond flavour stuff. Lovingly and attentively put together - the flair never overtakes the humanity, despite how impressive and techy the musicianship is (drumming is bananas, bass beefy, guitars godly, keys cute, and vox understated but kinda perfect within that mix).

10th October 2023 [BLAZINblitzer]

This gloops and bloops itā€™s way into some cute lil pockets nawww. Way cleverer than itā€™s veneer suggests - got some meat and potatoes under the hood. Idk the chord/key/melody (yeah seriously idk) choices are weird but gorgeous; giving me multicoloured fishie vibes but the fishie is in love and likes twee(d); shoegaze but in poppier shoes than she usually flaunts.

11th October 2023 [SINT]

This is nice! I like this! Very pleasant! Very danceable! Somewhere in the kraut/psych rock spectrum with some shoegazey/triphopy tendencies. Kinda v/a/g/u/e the whisper vox kinda flutter about rather than making a statement and songs come go come go without jamming a hook into my chest.

New Hymn to Freedom

12th October 2023 [SNIFF]

New Hymn to Freedom is that moment where you realise that you are more drunk than you realised like the shapes were cogent and now they are gone and youā€™re dancing and sleeping and canā€™t stop. I was going to walking around and would forget what happened. For that reason alone, a cool new agey weirdo jazz electronicA thing.

13th October 2023 [CYLINDER]

Woof one of the big bois OKAY Halleluhwah is absurd and magical and very stoned and I love it; Aumgn and Peking O are weird as fek and I need more time to decide if I love their wavey incoherence or want to kill them with a shovel.

Update (12.10.23): ima have to move on knowing that i havent fully bottomed out this or my relationship with this - far too much rich soupy goodness here to grasp in 2 days and 3 listens - but overall i currently think it is lovely. Stonking big grooves that it takes pleasure in disintegrating /// setting on fire. Listened to as the full 2LP makes me far less patient with the silliness in the second-half, but listened to in two sittings/parts = fresh and non-weary experience of the latter tracks = stupid good sky high losing mind couch sinking leaf scoffing afsljaliwaa KAAAAAAAAA sknandfadfpiefjaal chaljvalffaldjaj cbasbascbshdbsfvb.

Regularly cute, often beautiful, many hugs, yay. Particularly like this when it dials in the upbeat folktronica; the more ambient, hazy, dream pop asides are less exciting to the empty space between my ears. I can just sense thisā€™ll have worked itā€™s way deep into my soul, given time and rain.

16th October 2023 [DEDEX]

Lovely lush dust bowl melodies; cute novel take on the stoner rock ting w/ more raga etc. flourishes, definitely psych very hypnotic yes yes yes BUT i kinda wish it did a lil something extra with it, ya know? Theyā€™re quite content to sit on the same progression for 10 mins and not play around with it substantially, which is a shame. Also, when youā€™re innovating, why stick so firmly to the cheesy vox style that, although I donā€™t mind, feels a bit off, when the broader soundscape has grown so much further; AND, if you're gonna lean in to the very NOT heavy lane of the genre, why not go HAZIER, double track lengths, become indecipherable, get silly? Idk, probs being a whinge as I mostly very like this, it's just things like 3 do it better.

Just weird lol carousel dingaling violin warble kinda psych pop kinda janky strange psych rock kinda a bit weeeeeeeeeee of everything must have been wild in 1967/8. The opener and closer in particular are hallucinogenic mind melters of weird samples, flashbacks/forwards, the goof is everywhere and growing, ayayayayaya. Cloud Song is pretty. Very very very very very much NOT my usual thing, and some of the blue(sy) cheese just grates an eek out of me. Hodgepodge alert we have a hodgepodge nobody panic. Idk where to begin uh itā€™s proggier and folkier than I was expecting for what I understood to be an ambient techno downtempo kinda band, but I take it thereā€™s some weirdness with it not actually being a FSOL album I can see weā€™re already getting confused. BIG trip! Lots of things! Very effervescent like a tablet in water in my brain or a cannon. Eclectic in a way that may undercut something idfk. God im tired.

Ah Elephant 6 you do hath some juicy fruits. Honestly I have no fucking excuse for not having checked this band sooner given their ties to NMH. Trippy 60s psych pop goodness but torn to shreds and put back together half a dozen times what the fuck is happening. Occasionally goes in an elliott smith direction, then back to the beatles / beach boys, then very much into its own hallucinations+cuteness thing. Big heavy onion, this. Good onion. Six pound onion. Lots of collage-y layers. Gonna take some time to cry my way through ā€˜em all but I currently think this is hugs.

Sky high sunny day trip hop ish tings with thicc grooves of the bounce and good heat radiation but god either I was not in the mood for this level of repetition or this is simply not my bag. I seem to have an irrational hatred of the album art which is bleeding into my appreciation of this fun lil romp. Dirty mildly lo-fi bluesy hard rock nā€™ roll that occasionally goes a kinda RUSH-BUT-HIGH direction before pivoting into the beatles wut. Production is off putting. Not much else to dislike, but for some reason I am feeling very un-enamoured (maybe the vox irk idk?).

That guitar/bass tone plus the snare tone plus the shoegaze-y ethereal-ness tone = some good tones right here. Tees (I think I mean "toes") that line between girth and grace in a way I've heard very little guitar music do in a long ol' while, topped off with just perfect production for the style. Only two listens deep, but the lyrics are already drawing me in further.
