| Average But Still Awesome Post-rock
post rock has an way too many generic/average bands who just go for that one epic sound and its kind of annoying. But I still love that basic post rock sound so here's a few albums which are mostly average but have the occasional moment where they get post rock just right. | | 1 |  | Red Sparowes
At the Soundless Dawn
Most of this album is just a little too content to sit in a mix of broodingly epic tones and never really do anything with them. But on the opener and on 'The Soundless Dawn...' when they find a strong opening theme they wring it for all it's worth. | | 2 |  | Gifts From Enola
From Fathoms
A whole bunch of distorted post-metal/rock riffs with some muffled screaming do not make a convincing album all on their own, especially when some of the tracks feel like they're being repeated. Luckily the two longest songs 'Trieste' and 'Aves' come in and save this by being colossal monsters that really do feel like they've been dredged up from the ocean bed, full of intricate, morphing guitar lines that flow naturally but also have an incredible impact. Above the Earth, Below the Sky
You could play any song from this and not bother with the rest of the album because you've heard it all now. The tremolo picking over a single note riff, giving way to echoing space before erupting into martial drums, a blistering wail of noise and some sudden silence. Re-arrange that in any order and you have this album. But you should still listen to 'What's in the Ground Belongs to You' and 'The Sun is in the North' because that formula is still kind of perfect. | | 4 |  | God Is An Astronaut

The piano tones and furious drumming isn't really enough to disguise the paucity of emotion in this album. However the double punch of 'No Return' and 'Zodiac' is just enough to give this album a flicker of fire. | | 5 |  | The American Dollar
A Memory Stream
It's probably a bit harsh to berate the ambient duo for not having enough going on to keep your attention but I'm going to do it anyway, because too many of these songs give up halfway through and substitute mournful sounds for atmosphere. Luckily the last third picks up with the subdued guitar freak out on 'Our Hearts Are Read', the beautifully minimalist 'Anything You Synthesize' (which really has to be watched with its video for the true effect) and the 12 minute journey of 'Starscapes'. Awful title but by about 4 minutes in you're too relaxed to notice. | |

10.09.09 | tbh i could have filled this list with about 20 post rock bands with similar sounds (and i would probably have enjoyed every last repetitive drum march, one note piano and echoing guitar) but this is really enough to get the point across. I love post rock but you have to really like that basic sound.
Anyway if you don't feel like listening to boring post rock go listen to And So I Watch You From Afar instead because they're amazing and like nothing else. | Oneironaut

10.10.09 | i definetly agree, post rock is one of, if not my favorite genre, but there is just a lot of post rock that sounds all the same and just like the next artist, at times its hard to find new artists in the genre when most of them sound very similar | RawJimmy
