Deafheaven always been a band I appreciated far more than I actually enjoyed listening to. I liked their last album the most. I don't know what it is with bands like this, reminds me of Pianos Become the Teeth last album. "Hey guys let's kinda go P/R aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand our balls just fell off". Would gladly welcome more P/R vibes with their balls still attached over shoegaze, personally. this aint it chief =( maybe other songs..

Very mixed on this. Deafheaven had to shake it up I think on this record but the direction they did isnt really my thing. Glad its been well received. Hope the album is a mixture of old and new.

Haven’t been sold on anything this band has done, yet this is more likeable.

This somehow gets better every time I listen. I love the chilled out vibe. I'm sure this is the softest on the record, but, like, I just accidentally looped this like 7 times in a row while working and loved every second.

The only thing that I could critique this track on is that it neither stands out as sounding unique or original, nor does it really sound all that much like Deafheaven. I love the vibe and sound though, so I am looking forward to hearing the full album.

This is some straight-up stress-reducing drug. 12 plays in a row, well over an hour. Woulda never expected Deafheaven to sound quite like this but honestly I love it. Exactly what I needed this morning while I catch up on 2 days of missed work while ultra stressed. I get some people disliking it vehemently but I'm proud to sit in the opposite end of the spectrum.

I expected to be disappointed and then remembered I was already bored of what they were doing with OCHL. This is the smart thing for them to do and I think the song is pretty good, the style works, and the build/payoff was nice. Hoping they can make the whole album pretty dynamic though or it's going to get real boring.

song was losing me for a bit but using the gazey/clean stuff to build into the screamy bits worked like a charm -- I hate when bands try to isolate their harder and softer sounds into separate tracks and never blur the lines. basically the last minute of Great Mass of Color redeemed the previous 5 for me

Let’s all be real, George’s screams were never that great (well except for “I WANT TO DREAM!”). I think the singing is cool and has much more of a dominant Morrisey vibe rather than the “buried in the mix” whispery signing of other similar acts. If they can balance the black metal with this vibe, it could be something cool and different.

i think this new wave bm vibe fits pretty well with them and i cant wait to see bm larpers go absolutely insane over it.

His "black metal" skramz were always intense and awesome, but they got old after 4 albums of just screaming. (besides Night People) Super happy about this stylistic change. Might even be their finest work next to Sunbather if they pull it off correctly.

yeah i hope it's not a straightforward purely shoegaze album, at least. if it puts as much influence on instrumental sections as other albums have then I'll probably be satisfied, as long as the songs remain fairly structurally unique to one another.
