pretty cool titles to be honest like the album title, i assume being a lament to the concrete jungle, though being in new york you can have a break if you go to central park, its like a whole other world

I think I'll just pass, even when it's good, which is very unlikely.

I don’t like the direction of the new song from what I’m hearing . Will the rest of the album be good ?
| |
Lmao people are going to be so pissed I love it
| |
Hope it's better than their last monstrosity and I have faith that it will be.

people are going to be so pissed [2]

I heard a sample of the new song Great Mass of Colors on Apple Music. If I had heard this sample without knowing who recorded it, I would never have guessed Deafheaven. My expectations are lowered. : (

Awful intro track aside the last album was great
| |
Found the song and all I gotta say is the people who prefer their heavier, more aggressive stuff are gonna be very disappointed
| |
Good
| |
song's fucking great black metal chuds are gonna cope so hard

new single is wonderful, i'm so down for this

I didn't like the snippet I just heard tho but I'm not a fan of George's clean vox in general so now the plot thickens

"I think I'll just pass, even when it's good, which is very unlikely. "

| |
ctrl f "heavy"
what is this in relation to lol

deafheaven good

"damn i'm in the mood for something heavy... imma spin some deafheaven" is a sentence i don't think anyone would ever utter

New song is a beaut. Glad they're trying out something new. Of course that alone is gonna piss a lot of people off, but who cares? Officially hyped for the new album
| |
not the best Ride song I've ever heard
| |
Is this article format pasta or something? or just a really bad attempt at dry humour?
| |
It's a dry reference to the info being leaked on reddit, partially by Kerry's mom.
| |
pure crap.
| |
Regardless of the tempo change, the instrumentation just comes off as bland and lifeless.
This song sounds like a really bad attempt at a bad attempt of trying to be Holy Fawn.
| |
I'm not as much into this style as you guys, but Great Mass of Color rules. Remember when people called Shelter by Alcest lifeless? Lmao

"Pre-ordered"
where da hell dis pre-order at

Deafheaven always been a band I appreciated far more than I actually enjoyed listening to. I liked their last album the most. I don't know what it is with bands like this, reminds me of Pianos Become the Teeth last album. "Hey guys let's kinda go P/R aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand our balls just fell off". Would gladly welcome more P/R vibes with their balls still attached over shoegaze, personally. this aint it chief =( maybe other songs..
| |
What does P/R mean? Pop Rock?
But yea, you don't have to like it of course. It really enjoy Deafheaven's last album as well. Took me a while to really appreciate it though
| |
"Hey guys let's kinda go P/R aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand our balls just fell off".
lolwuttttttttttt
| |
Deafheaven did a Turnover
Edit: and it actually works
| |
Yea they pioneered NPR. Narcolepsy Post-Rock.
I was in the middle of describing it but then I clicked on the Wait for Love review and he summed up everything I was trying to say far more articulately than I ever could.
| |
P/R lol I'm stupid.
Whose review? Wait for Love has few of them
| |
The staff review.
| |
Aye, gonna read it
| |
I hate the new song a little. The singing is fucking gag-worthy. Could maybe shift in either direction because the last part of the song is actually pretty cool, but the first part sounds like the most generic indie-gaze shit
| |
"the first part sounds like the most generic indie-gaze shit"
yeah that's p much the exact reason as to why i like it hahaha
| |
Is it George who's singing???
| |
I have a feeling their Heaven's Club sound is more prominent here. Very drastic change from OCHL. Any traces of black metal are gone, but I don't mind honestly. Looking forward to what's next.
| |
Ah damn, this new song is chill af.
| |
"yeah that's p much the exact reason as to why i like it hahaha"
Well shit, glad you're enjoying it lol. Just not my cup of tea
| |
New song may be run-of-the-mill neetgaze, but it's still better than anything off that tacky naked santa album
| |
Faaaaark I'm into this.
| |
"New song may be run-of-the-mill neetgaze, but it's still better than anything off that tacky naked santa album"
big nah
| |
Naaaah that record was fantastic
| |
nah, it was meh at best
| |
I hope song 5 and 9 to be a blackgaze
| |
it's... okay
| |
I gave the new single a few listens this morning. The last minute of the song kind of reminds me of the end of Canary Yellow which was one of the best songs from OCHL. Therefore, I am going to reserve judgement and optimistically agree with Hawks.
"Hope it's better than their last monstrosity and I have faith that it will be."
| |
https://consequence.net/2021/06/deafheaven-infinite-granite-great-mass-of-color/
"According to the press release, singer George Clarke’s black metal howls are at a minimum on Infinite Granite. Instead, he employed “falsettos, whispers, multi-part harmonies, and other adventurous vocal treatments” to utilize his full range. Meanwhile, guitarists Kerry McCoy and Shiv Mehra incorporated more synth textures alongside their expressive fretwork."
| |
lol this new song is boring
| |
Shocking. Does it have gybe parts or metalcore chug parts?
| |
Wow its not metal. They are doing the post-NEU sonic youth thing now
| |
This band is too metalcore for me
| |
i take back my deafheaven good comment that single sucks ass and im mad they never capitalized on Black Brick
| |
This new song is promising. I'll judge it in the context of the album.
| |
His voice kind of sounds like Garm’s on the last two Ulver records
| |
"This band is too metalcore for me"
me too
| |
Single is boring but gets better as it goes, very interested to hear more
| |
fuck yes I love this so much.
| |
It’s weird that anyone’s surprised by this- I mean they’ve flirted closer and closer to psych-tinged shoegaze for a while now.
I personally think George’s croony-vibrato fits really well here— leagues better here than that last soft take from the last LP. My only gripe is their decision to cull his screams w all them effects at the end(?). Regardless, hyped 4 this
| |
these guys suck
| |
I appreciate the thoroughly irreverent tone of Sputnikmusic.com music news.
DGAF about whatever is happening with this band

thanks for commenting

"DGAF about whatever is happening with this band"
aww shucks
| |
This shift was more than expected

Sick just what the world needed another shoegaze band

Shit thread. Song rules. Feel like the new one is gonna be Shelter Pt. 2

"tacky naked santa album"
dude how do you like this but not the great dismal
| |
song was great, singing sounded great, stay mad neckbeards
| |
So it is basically Hundredth.
| |
New song sounds like a decent Chapterhouse/Swervedriver tune but nothing more. However, it actually makes me curious about the album, which never happens to me with Deafheaven.
| |
song fuckin slaps
| |
Slaps straight into the trash
| |
consider me the garbage man, babyyy
| |
This is great
| |
Deafheaven channeling lots of Slowdive.
| |
"Shit thread. Song rules."
Agreed
| |
"New song sounds like a decent Chapterhouse/Swervedriver tune"
exactly why it's great
| |
I didn't expect George's clean vocals to sound a bit like Morrissey.
| |
Yeah song is dope, vocals were solid, I’m hyped

| |
"where da hell dis pre-order at" Nowhere, it was a joke.
Song's interesting, I like his clean voice a lot, but I hope they add some more aggressive tracks in between cause a whole album of this would be insufferable. If they balance it out nicely, they could have smth really special with this one.
| |
sounds like a generic indie rock song
| |
lol dude i served a hard diss on balls's facebook status
| |
Love the song, exactly the direction I hoped they'd go in. Would be even better if the album also had some long-form post-rock stuff too that reaches the 10-15 minute mark, cause they do those epics really well.
| |
TBH it's growing on me. Like new-wave post-rocky vibes. It certainly gets better as it goes. Color me curious.
| |
oh sick
| |
wait did i just accidentally sign into my old account oh shit lol
| |
off you go
| |
on i go
| |
How the hell do you accidentally get "ianblxdsoe" instead of "ian b" when signing in?
| |
this is ur brain on deafheaven
| |
already don't like them but man i hated that
| |
Great Mass of Men makes me think of Night Flowers. Maybe that's proof it's a bit generic idk, I'm not well versed enough in these genres, but I enjoy it
| |
@div idk dawg apparently there was a password on my chrome app that let me back in lol, prob last comment on this acc for a while though. just thought it'd be fun to screw around with heheh
| |
yo @ianblxdsoe why you tryna impersonate me 😳😳
| |
"Who still cares about this hipster black metal band"
Lmao.
| |
p4k and some other posers who just discovered aircon musik
| |
Very mixed on this. Deafheaven had to shake it up I think on this record but the direction they did isnt really my thing. Glad its been well received. Hope the album is a mixture of old and new.
| |
yeah people act like this band were straight up raw black metal on their first albums then shifted lmao
| |
yeah, I never got that
band never tried to be trve in the first place
| |
the same shit happened to Myrkur, i love Myrkur but meh on this band. Of course her being fine as hell may have me biased
| |
Haven’t been sold on anything this band has done, yet this is more likeable.
| |
This somehow gets better every time I listen. I love the chilled out vibe. I'm sure this is the softest on the record, but, like, I just accidentally looped this like 7 times in a row while working and loved every second.
| |
It's a great song.
| |
The only thing that I could critique this track on is that it neither stands out as sounding unique or original, nor does it really sound all that much like Deafheaven. I love the vibe and sound though, so I am looking forward to hearing the full album.
| |
This is some straight-up stress-reducing drug. 12 plays in a row, well over an hour. Woulda never expected Deafheaven to sound quite like this but honestly I love it. Exactly what I needed this morning while I catch up on 2 days of missed work while ultra stressed. I get some people disliking it vehemently but I'm proud to sit in the opposite end of the spectrum.
It's. A. Bop.
| |
I expected to be disappointed and then remembered I was already bored of what they were doing with OCHL. This is the smart thing for them to do and I think the song is pretty good, the style works, and the build/payoff was nice. Hoping they can make the whole album pretty dynamic though or it's going to get real boring.
| |
I think it is absolutely fucking brilliant. This makes a lot more sense than PBTT going completely clean. The softer moodier melodic transition of Deafheaven should shut up the blackgaze/black metal elitists, but lo and behold we have people bitching. It is fucking funny. XD
IMO, the transitional period for Deafheaven has been way less awkward compared to bands like BMTH, Underoath, and even Thrice.
| |
Does George do all the vocals?
| |
Yep. His cleans have come a long way.
I'm with Nomos on this one. New song is so addictive I can't stop listening to it
| |
Addictive.
| |
yeah this is a really nice song. the vocals in a few parts remind me heavy of Neil from Slowdive
| |
Thanks for the correction.
| |
"IMO, the transitional period for Deafheaven has been way less awkward compared to bands like BMTH, Underoath, and even Thrice."
whut
| |
It’s way less awkward
| |
how many zits
| |
Underoath did not have a "transitional period" they had all hits and one huge miss released as a comeback album.
| |
Song's pretty good. inb4 3.2 average score.
| |
This is pretty cool. First time I've been interested in anything from them post-Sunbather.
| |
"This makes a lot more sense than PBTT going completely clean."
other way arounddddd
| |
It's a good song, but I find this direction quite unexciting. Hopefully the execution will be good.
| |
Song is a trillion times better listened to with headphones, stunning single
| |
""IMO, the transitional period for Deafheaven has been way less awkward compared to bands like BMTH, Underoath, and even Thrice."
what on earth is Thrice doing in this list, their 'transition' has been 'Beggars but with slightly less energy and dynamics on every album'
song was losing me for a bit but using the gazey/clean stuff to build into the screamy bits worked like a charm -- I hate when bands try to isolate their harder and softer sounds into separate tracks and never blur the lines. basically the last minute of Great Mass of Color redeemed the previous 5 for me
| |
song is absolutely stunning, i keep coming back to it again and again.
| |
Let’s all be real, George’s screams were never that great (well except for “I WANT TO DREAM!”). I think the singing is cool and has much more of a dominant Morrisey vibe rather than the “buried in the mix” whispery signing of other similar acts. If they can balance the black metal with this vibe, it could be something cool and different.
| |
i think this new wave bm vibe fits pretty well with them and i cant wait to see bm larpers go absolutely insane over it.
| |
"Let’s all be real, George’s screams were never that great"
real bad take right here. they were perfect on the demo-sunbather era recordings
| |
His "black metal" skramz were always intense and awesome, but they got old after 4 albums of just screaming. (besides Night People) Super happy about this stylistic change. Might even be their finest work next to Sunbather if they pull it off correctly.
| |
Night Peole sucked though
| |
George's screams are perfectly serviceable but agreed that just for my personal tastes I need some variety after a while. This is a direction I'm very glad to see them veer in.
| |
" i cant wait to see bm larpers go absolutely insane over it."
Idk why people keep saying this as if bm nerds shouldn't be elated that the fake bm hipster band finally dropped their facade and just went full indie rock
| |
i love how it's 2021 and we're still making fun of bands for not being trve
| |
^^^^
| |
if they keep whining about posevr bm then i will continue to make fun of them for it

Make Black Metal Krieg Again
| |
Krieg could use a new album now that you mention it.
| |
Not going to lie, actually prefer this pist-rockey gaze sound to their black metal. Mr tea kettle can sing damn
| |
This is the most interested I have ever been in Deafheaven damn. New tracks great
| |
Great Mass of Cum is gud
| |
So thats what they how they passed time in lock down just built up all that juice for this Great Mass of Cum

that's why it's so juicy lol
love it!

another new track
this new album is gonna slappppp
| |
Second track brings the “meh”. On this trajectory it will be lucky to hold a 2.5 average by the end of the year
| |
Nah, it's great. I'm more hype for this than I was OCHL
| |
the new songs suck a lot
| |
in case anyone was hoping these would be outliers and the rest of the album would be heavier, here's a quote from a new Pitchfork interview:
"Their upcoming album Infinite Granite is their biggest left turn yet, with radiant, arena-ready production from Justin Meldal-Johnsen—known for his work on pop breakthroughs from Tegan and Sara, M83, and Paramore—and clean, melodic vocals (and honest-to-god choruses) from frontman George Clarke."
| |
if it's not on paramore's level i'm gonna kill this band
| |
i'm gonna have to get inovolved
| |
from the songs so far it sounds like this band is finally going to make music that actually lives up to the hype around them.
| |
I think the album is gonna be polarizing af, much like Shelter. Unless they can pull off some really creative twists and turns and merge at least some of their black metal nuances.
Great Mass already sold me on it and I'm confident the rest of the album will pull through. The Gnashing is cool too, but George's vocals do come off as boring in that one
| |
Don't like great mass at all but gnashing quite good
| |
Why have they turned into Interpol?
| |
My thoughts exactly. Aping of the fking Pretender opening arp in the Epic Bridge made me chuckle too
| |
Best song they’ve done yet.
| |
massive stretch as it is their worst song
| |
modest stretch as that hilarious opener on their last album probably still exists
| |
no wayyyy oltna the guys voice is like butter and those guitars were so twinkly and shiny and then they did the whole reverb crushing guitar things with the screams at the end to make fun of the people who wanted a hardcore gaze album it was even sooooo beautiful
| |
Opening riff was nice, then turned boring and then back to nice. Album will be a solid 3.7
| |
"modest stretch as that hilarious opener on their last album probably still exists"
I fucking love that song lol
| |
"Unless they can pull off some really creative twists and turns"
yeah i hope it's not a straightforward purely shoegaze album, at least. if it puts as much influence on instrumental sections as other albums have then I'll probably be satisfied, as long as the songs remain fairly structurally unique to one another.
| |
Sounds like a deafheaven/Bo Burnham collaboration.
| |
Swear to god this dudes trying to randomly sound like Davey Havok at times.
| |
sounds more like Morrissey to me
| |
Great mass of color is a great song. If the rest of the album is that quality it will be a 4 or 4.5. Like the screams at the end of GMOC. Hope they keep some of those on the album.
| |
