Sister is the Ride the Lightning of Sonic Youth's career; it is essentially the major turning point where they go from being your college kid's jerk material to everybody's jerk material.

This is SY's most up-tempo release so far, with the tunings not as dissonant and the overall sound being sleeker than usual. It's a streamlined propulsion, a bridge between EVOL and its melodic touches scattered between atonal no wave and Daydream Nation and its grandiloquent ode to alternative music. Best of both worlds.

"Sister" is both understated and extremely exciting. Moore and Ronaldo blend conventional but eerie indie jangle with their infamous power tool barrage for an album that is subtler than the follow-up "Daydream Nation" but more evocatively textured. Best songs: 'Schizophrenia', 'Beauty Lies in the Eye', 'Pipeline', 'Pacific Coast Highway'

This is better than Daydream Nation. I bought this first, and after reading a bunch of reviews, expected a lot out of DDN. But I was actually disappointed! Concise noise rocker album!!

i think this is actually a BETTER introduction than Daydream Nation. it's more concice of an album (1/2 of the running time of DN) and just as adventerous. the first song alone contains more mind-bending guitar effects than most bands touch on in an album, or most guitarists can even play. this was alternative back when the word was understood to mean something. unflinching and uncompromising, one of the touchstone albums of the 80's. influential on a good many bands. when you hear this you feel a real sense of inspiration and empowerment. Daydream Nation is probably more brilliant, but more of a chore for just one sitting. this is the best Sonic Youth album to cut your teeth on. then be prepared, Daydream Nation is their peak. (though this is still my favorite!)

"It's hard not to romanticize about Sonic Youth's long, trippy career. You could easily think of them as the 'godfathers of grunge,' who went against the conventional song structure, but somehow, kept it there the whole time. Thurston Moore and Lee Ronaldo are the Keith Richards and Mick Taylor of indie, with their alternate-tuned guitars pushing out dissonant melodies, interlocking and twisting around each, crafting some of the most unique guitar work of their time. Their sound is easily identifiable, especially when you consider an album like Daydream Nation, which followed in the wake of the fairly 'small' Sister. Indeed, Sister was a precurser to the huge, anthemic sound of it's follower, but the atmosphere it creates is like nothing else. Sister is like falling into a large thorn bush, with dozens of rabid bunnies tearing your flesh off simultaneously, but you could care less, because you've got a lollipop. Oh, that sweet, sugary lollipop." - somethingvague

Excellent work from the youth. Melodies are really nice and this record seems to perfectly combine noise and melody to create the best sonic youth record. though it does have some annoying moments, this record shows the artyness of the youth in its most presentable and beautiful form. Guitar work is fucking amazing.
