2.2 poor | Erwann S. STAFF | July 20th 23 | As usual, can't get past the shitty clean vox, the constant chuggy chug chug, and the shift between cheesy boys band song ("Silhouette") and faux hevvyyy shit (the chug chug).

2.5 average | LikeWindOnANipple | July 10th 23 | Kinda samey. The parts that aren't samey are random breaks. Song structure is only vaguely relevant. Periphery is one of those bands where I could complain to the point where it sounds like I'm talking shit, but those complaints are inherent in the strengths of their identity, so there isn't any real point in complaining. I'm not going to get subtlety, or tasteful ambience / dynamic interplay, or meaningful / significant song progressions, or any experimentation that doesn't have some level of safety to it already established in its genre, but that's okay, because Periphery has been doing this long enough for me to not have to critically analyze my expectations. Still, not bad. They can djent. They can sort of do pop. It works. It's just a lot of the same.

1.5 very poor | chalkecheese | March 29th 23 | Hearing where they pushed their sound with Periphery IV after stagnating a bit in Periphery III made me hopeful that they'd continue to do new things in this medium with this one. Admittedly they did do new things here, but they're god awful synth-pop things that they do NOT pull off (Silhouette and Dying Star) and feel almost like a pastiche of all the things I've grown to dislike about this genre: shoehorned, thoughtless sax solos (Wildfire), songs reaching up towards ten minutes not justifying their lengths (Dacul Gras, Zagreus), and just a general lack of atmosphere or depth in most of the songs. Spencer's voice was never a problem for me, but it was such a negative presence on this album. He has a such an obvious lack of nuance in his vocals (the over-compressed mixing on them doesn't help) that really makes the soft sections fall flat for me. Maybe I'll give it another shot in a few months, but it feels like they ran out of ideas this time around.

4.0 excellent | ajcollins15 | March 15th 23 | It is kind of funny how on the most recent Haken release ?Fauna? I went into how this brand of progressive metal might be starting to get stale with me. However, this new Periphery album might have completely taken that point away because the long-standing Djent band continues to push out explosive and memorizing progressive metalcore with that heavy and meme-filled djent style guitars. Honestly, if it wasn?t for the weird cooldown track in ?Silhouette?, this would easily be a higher score. I am also glad to see the band pulling a little from what made their very early records such a highlight for me with more focus on melodic guitars than just the brutality they have been working with. ?Periphery V? might not be the most groundbreaking record for the genre and even for the band, but it continues to show how consistent this band is year after year.

3.3 great | Trey STAFF | March 13th 23 | It's Periphery doing what Periphery does. The meat of just about every song is awesome, but everything overstays its welcome. Also, Silhouette, Dying Star, and Thanks Nobuo could have been left off the album completely because they're pretty damn boring. It would have helped with album pacing and length.

2.5 average | altmjw | March 10th 23 | Yea, Periphery are arguably more skilled than most of their peers (including vocalist Sotelo), but technical proficiency alone doesn?t write good songs. They have to know by now that songs like Silhouette are not good in any sense. Despite this, there are smaller than a handful of decent songs here.
