It's fitting that a shitty sound off like "It's fitting that "Ether" and "One Mic," two of the most overrated hip-hop songs of all time, are from STILLmatic, one of the most overrated hip-hop albums of all time." comes from one of the shittiest sputnikmusic users OF ALL TIME.

Nobody expected this to be good. Nas has fallen off so hard by this point that when Jay-Z called him out on "Takeover", it was no more than kicking a man while he's down. Who could have known that Nas would use that feud as a springboard for a career revival of epic proportions? "Ether" bettered Jay-Z on every level, "Got Urself A Gun" was brilliant, and the amazing "One Mic" was simply the song of his career. Even the lesser tracks - "Rewind", "Every Ghetto", "Smokin'" - displayed an desire and invention that had been sorely missing in the 2 albums prior to this. This album not only made it okay to like Nas again, it reinstated him as probably the most technically gifted and naturally talented rapper of all time. Honest to God, this is nearly the match of Illmatic, and it's among the best rap albums of the decade so far.

This album is considered by many to be Nas second classic (me being one of them), and it truly is. So let's get started with the review.
1. Stillmatic (The Intro): Great song where Nas freestyles. 5/5
2. Ether: The song where Nas viciously destroys Jay-Z, and is the best diss track of all time. 5/5
3. Got Ur Self A Gun: Great song with a great beat, where Nas showcases his lyrical ability. 4/5
4. Smokin: One of the weakest songs on the album, which talks about smoking, but it isn't bad. 3.5/5
5. You're Da Man: Great song with great production by Large Proffesor, who we have come to expect great beats from. 5/5
6. Rewind: A genius song where Nas tells a story backwards, where it starts at the end, and ends at the beginning, with a great beat by Large Professor. 5/5
7. One Mic: Now we have come to the best song on Stillmatic, and one of the best Nas songs in general. 5/5
8. 2nd Childhood: Another great song, this is the only song on Stillmatic produced by DJ Premier 5/5
9. Destroy and Rebuild: Another great diss track, in which Nas disses Cormega, and Nature, and theres an interpretation of The Bridge Is Over in the chorus. 5/5
10. The Flyest: A great collaboration with AZ. 5/5
11. Braveheart Party: Nas is good in this song, but the Bravehearts suck, the worst song on Stillmatic. 3/5
12. Rule: One of the weakest songs on this album. 3.5/5
13. My Country: After the album slowly fell down, it came back up with this song. 5/5
14. What Goes Around: Another great song. 5/5
15. Every Ghetto: Great way to finish the album. 5/5

Nas came back bigger than ever lyrically, Stillmatic is consistently killer lyrically, no doubt. the problem, though, is that the beats are consistently worse than anything even Nastradamus would accept. "Ether" was acceptable because, like that bitch in the Ludacris song, that beat just got out tha way, but that's the stand-out, most of the rest of the songs just crappily interpolate with Nas's newly refound lyrical prowess. *Sigh*

For those that enjoy a genuine hip-hop album containing various sounds, styles, and poetic stories, Stillmatic is a great album to chillax to. NaS invites you into his world (or his mind) and it can be a beautiful ray of sunshine surrounded by love or a sudden, crippling gunshot wound. Raw & Thought-provoking in both senses.

Altough the 2 weak tracks of filler (Smokin' and My Country) let down the other 12 songs of lyrical creativity, conscious material and never before seen levels of flow from NaS. Superb album

It's always nice to see an artist that had been reeling somewhat catch a second wind and release some great stuff, not only because it's awesome they're doing the stuff they had the potential to do, but because you know it feels good for them too. Nas righted a ship that was all but foundering with STILLmatic, which eschewed the days of 1999 and sounded like he recorded these tracks in the same period as It Was Written. With much better production, hooks that were actually good, and lyrics that painted more vivid pictures of Queensbridge, this "comeback" album reminded listeners that Nas still had greatness in him, as evidenced by two stone-cold classics in "Ether" and "One Mic". Of course, the entire first half of the album, ending on "Destroy & Rebuild", is practically flawless, so it's no surprise some unforgettable material came out of it. Though it does lose steam in its second half and doesn't really recover, it's hard not to look at STILLmatic as the statement it was: that Nasty Nas was finally back to form.
