Wormrot at their most straightforward and autopilot are still some of the most ferocious and infectious grind you'll hear out there.

With tracks that have a clear influence of Black Metal, Wormrot continues to walk the path inside the Grindcore ground, and proves to be the best band of the genre nowadays. Note: Clearly underrated because of the change and the step back in heaviness compared to Dirge.

Voices is a beast. 20 tracks in 26 minutes and pure, unadulterated violent energy. Grindcore with chordal complexity akin to melodic black metal and even some metalcore at times. The sheer amount of noise and energy makes it a hard one to really listen to over and over again but as with any good grind album each track makes even the deadest of souls want to get up and move; it drains you. A lot of grind albums make it hard to recall tracks from, this is the opposite. There are many memorable riffs spread throughout the record and Wormrot do good by juxtaposing slower, chugging rhythms with breakneck tempo, ride cymbal backed chaos. The ebbs and flows are key similar to what Nails accomplished on their 2016 release. Lots of good tracks with Hollow Roots, Oblivious Mess, Dead Wrong and Fallen Into Disuse standing out.

Singaporean grindcore trio Wormrot have been purveyors of very solid and fun grind for about eight years now, but the knock on them has always been their lack of originality, despite their knack for writing some nice riffs and keeping high energy. Voices won't do much to sway those opinions, but it's apparent that they are doing more this time around to set themselves apart from their peers. For instance, many of the riffs here are reminiscent of something you might hear on a screamo record (just listen to "Hollow Roots" and "Shallow Standards" for proof of this). There's also some influence coming in from crust punk later in the album on its longer tracks, which in addition to the aforementioned riffs and the very solid grind of the rest of the album, gives the overall product a nice variety. It's clear that the band has spent a lot of time harnessing their craft, but hopefully next time it won't take as long and will be even better. For now, though, Voices is one of the better grind records of 2016, and for that it deserves a listen from any fan of the genre.
