Hey kid, d'you like Deftones? Our music is divided into two parts: the random ones where our singer will sound like a sick (ie: sick in the sense of ill, not dope) Chino, and the other random chuggy mcchugface ones written by the guy who found Car Bomb unused material. Quitting that ragemode, no part is truly bad, but they each feel completely independent and not connected at all to each other.

Love seeing a band that makes smart use of their influences as a vehicle to introduce listeners to just how fucking technically proficient and solid their songwriting/playing truly is. The atmosphere that bathes this album is addictive.

so typical of sputnik to see a metalcore album FINALLY getting praise and its users immediately retaliate with their ?ACKTUALLY? ass reviews/soundoffs. this music is damn good, metalcore may be stale as a genre in general but this aint one of THOSE albums, stop acting like it is one. albums like this are rare. edit: yeah this is for sure a 5, upping the score

This lived up to my expectations and then some. Glad to see this group take off with that melodic and shoegaze-y soundscape in several of the tracks here whilst balancing it with heavy and frantic riffs found in others like "Broken Vision Rhythm" (The vocals were great too). Thoroughly enjoyed "Two-Way Mirror", "Screaming", and "Heavy Is the Head..." as well. Here's hoping this is a grower.

Many times of 'I Let It In...' you will find yourself swathed in imposing atmosphere and awe-striking splendour. Many times. But not most. Because mostly you are bombarded with songs compromising their melodic memorability and concise song-writing for heavy sound and pretend-complex instrumentation. In hopes of sounding bombastic, blistering, emotionally riveted, they come off more as having a musical tantrum, not knowing what to shout or weep first, blending everything into one ugly unintelligible pile.

immersive and vast. One second I have butterflies, the next an aggressive haze. The best source of escapism in

I guess I am not too surprised that there is a 2.4 and a 5.0 review of this album. 'I Let It In And It Took Everything' is riding the wave of alternative nu metal rebirth while blending in djent, metalcore and atmospheric gaze elements and really, really honing in on prime era Deftones feels in the best tracks Loathe has to offer. The flow of the record is really superb. 'Two Way Mirror' is an alternative metal masterclass which precedes an ambient interlude track before Loathe explodes into 'New Faces in the Dark' which blends djent, alt metal and metalcore seamlessly. Honestly, the songs that focus on the singing are the best here but are they too derivative of Deftones? The heavy songs are effective and give the album a nice flow but often the breakdowns and djent elements seem repetitive and less memorable than those softer tracks. A lot of great things going on here but some moments feel a bit too emulative for this to really be an AOTY contender.

Loathe's sophomore record has some pretty good production and a fair amount of enjoyable passages throughout, but when the band incorporates these cleaner sections I just feel like they try way too hard emulate their very obvious Deftones influence to the point where it feels really derivate, like the singer is trying his absolute hardest to sound like Chino Moreno. This on-the-sleeves kind of approach can sometimes work out (Agressive Evolution, Screaming, Is It Really You?), but also really fall flat (A Sad Cartoon), above the fact that I think the band hasn't really perfected this Car Bomb meets Deftones dynamic either, as the transitions on this album from time to time can still clash a bit sonically. Still, I'd be interested to see where the band takes this formula in the future, because while it did need to grow on me a bit at first, I do think this is a decent LP from a band that is going through the growing pains of crafting their sound. Some of these soaring alt metal choruses are actually genuinely stunning, and the band seems pretty open to experiment with their dynamics as well, as there are a few beautiful ambient sections scattered throughout the tracklist that to me nicely enhance the atmosphere of this record. The track Heavy Is The Head That Falls With The Weight Of A Thousand Thoughts opens with a pretty cool, dense black metal passage which actually does not feel out of place at all, and generally when the band breaks into these really heavy sections with those groaning djent-style guitars and throat-shredding vocals they actually pull it off quite tastefully.

Want to like this more, but there are still some fairly predictable/corny moments and a lack of cohesion vocally throughout the record. Still, can?t deny they have a massive sound and bring plenty of syrup-coated moodiness with their heaviness a la Deftones, but with more spite and gloom than any recent Deftones material. 3.7
