This is a very overlooked album, and I don't mean it in the fanboyish way. I mean from a music technology standpoint, the way Gira assembled this album is amazing. The whole album was built up from previous studio recordings, live recordings, CIA interviews, found sounds, loops used in live performance and interviews. All assembled by Michael Gira, with overdubbing from the all the members at this point in time.rThis album acted as a way for Gira to dissolve Swans, and move on with his life. It is an amalgamation of their entire career (Pre My Farther Guided Me), and is haunting, freaky and beautiful. One of my favourite albums

This album has a very interesting concept and puts it to music masterfully. I don?t have anything bad to say about this album. It does everything it sets out to do. It evokes a lot of different emotions, through its central themes, like Alienation, Isolation and does so with overwhelming, very impressive production. However, at 2h21 long, this really isn?t somthing I wanna go back to. I understand perfectly why it?s among the greatest list, but it?s not something I would ever strive to listen to again.

I have put myself through this album non-stop for three weeks. I listened to it at work, while I studied, even before I went to bed. It's intriguing, daring, and terrifying. But I can't possibly give it more than this rating. This double album strives to literally do everything. Unfortunately, such an eclectic mix of genres and ideas more often than not crumbles under its own weight. For every gem like "Helpless Child", there is a song like "I Was A Prisoner In Your Skull" or "Empathy" that goes literally no where over the course of its entirety. For every terrifying experience like "Her Mouth Is Filled With Honey", there is a pointless filler track like "Fan's Lament" that makes you wonder why the song exists. And then, there are songs so good they almost standout TOO much. "The Sound" could stand alongside some of the greatest musical achievements in history, it's that good. It's so good, I get impatient while listening to the first disc of the album because all I want is to just cut the crap and get to hear "The Sound" again. Soundtracks For The Blind is quite the musical achievement and Swans should be commended for what they've done here, but the harsh reality is that THIS style was not perfected until the group reformed in the late 2000's. Their later stuff makes this look like an unfinished idea and unrefined.

This album was really awesome. I wasn't sure at first, but after a little bit into the second song it started getting a lot better, and I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of it. Innovative, all over the place and experimental; everything you could ask for in an album. It's a bit overlong, but if you don't mind the length it's very worth it.

Swans were known back in the Eighties throughout the underground for making some of the most terrifying music known to man. Soundtracks For The Blind, the double disk opus that is also Swans's last album, is a very terrifying album. Only while those Eighties, no-wave behemoths Swans released terrified you through sheer noise, Soundtracks For The Blind performs its torture in a different style: pure tension. Nearly two-and-a-half hours of ominous instrumentals, post-rock-influenced build-ups, and Michael Gira's depressing vocals make Soundtracks For The Blind anything but an easy listen, but like many difficult endeavors, it is a rewarding one. This one just doesn't do it for me. I get a lot of experimental albums after first listen (or
second) like The Drift by Scott Walker, both This Heat albums, The Art Of Walking by Pere Ubu (and
the other earlier ones) and all albums by Radian for example, and Pale Hands I Loved So Well by
Eyeless In Gaza (one of my all time favourite bands). I absolutely adore those albums I mentioned.
But I just can't give this one more than 2.5 because I just don't feel anything. Maybe Swans just
aren't my cup of tea. Only my own music world is important for me and Swans are playing only a
small role in it.

Though I'm in love with the newest incarnation of Swans, listening to this album will probably remain the most intense musical experience for me. Regardless of my surroundings listening to it takes all of my attention, I find it difficult to read on even the minimal ambient tracks. From the lofi voice samples to the post-rock opuses and folk the entire thing works to create the most disturbing and strange world in music, and the sequencing is so well done, it would be a shame to skip a track of this 2.5 hour album.

The most interesting 2h+ music album you'll ever hear, Soundtracks for the Blind is an inconceivably ambitious masterpiece that takes post-rock, dark ambient, noise, musique concrete, gothic rock, drone and many others and takes them to places you didn't even know existed (the dark fatalism of "Helpless Child", the dying innocence of "The Beautiful Days", the longing of "I Was a Prisoner in Your Skull", the mourning of "Her Mouth Was Filled with Honey" and the despair of "The Final Sacrifice").

This album is almost unlistenable due to how utterly terrifying it is. Just try listening to I Was a Prisoner in Your Skull or Minus Something late at night with headphones on - it is near impossible. No album has ever done that to me before and for that reason alone makes Soundtracks for the Blind a classic. But there are also amazing drone, ambient, techno, indie, and post-rock compositions on here too, all of which contribute to the album's brilliance.

Really genuinely incredible music, carving into the depths of Michael Gira?s mind and divining its cold and often upsetting nectar. Could've been a five, maybe it will be in the future, but for now I?m withholding that because just because you can musically recreate the incestuous codependent relationship between siblings doesn?t mean you should, no matter how experimental you are.

Equal parts disturbing, ambitious, harrowing, and jaw-dropping, Swans break new ground for themselves as a band and for music in general. Swans present an aural masterpiece of psychological torture that keeps the listener in its firm grasp due to its off the wall, extremely gratifying indulgence. Despite this Swans is not afraid to abuse and punish the listener as well, creating a relationship that makes me hate the album just as much as I love it. In that sense the album is incredibly haunting, and it cast a shadow over the rest of Swans' discography. It is the black sheep album, the elephant in the room that makes talking about their evolution as a band very difficult. Even if this album isn't their best, it's still undeniable how much the album stands out in more ways than one. Its presentation is unshakable, although it might be hard to say it's enjoyable. In the same way that a scary movie is able to entertain, this album is able to entertain.

Soundtracks for the Blind is Swans at their undeniable creative peak. An expansive 2 hour double album covering territory of post rock, drone, noise rock, and the occasional slippage of the punk aesthetic that was synonymous with their early work are all blended to create an awe inspiring journey. Gira's artistry of crafting delicate and diverse soundscapes and textures is brought forward more so than any other album in Swans's catalog. An album that everybody should experience at least once in their life because there really isn't anything else like it when it comes to treading this much ground and still remaining a cohesive piece of art.

A lengthy and ambitious summary of Swans' extensive discography. Soundtracks compresses the influential group's dark, expansive, and above all strange musical style into a patchwork-style compilation clocking in at over two hours. To explain this album or call it cohesive would be impossible, but the tracks are held together by an overarching and perpetual darkness that is found in various way across each song, building and building until it indoctrinates you and leaves your mind warped.
