The start of "generic" metalcore or the "Killswitch" style, it's KsE dropping a huge bomb on the metalcore scene. From clean vocals to high-pitched screams and harsh grunts, Jesse Leach is an exceptional vocalist (though some may argue Howard is better), and the emotional clearly pours from his voice. The guitars are ferocious attacks and the drums pound through the speakers with huge force. The most troubling problem from the record is that the ending falls off, as all of the memorable songs (minus "Temple...") are all towards the beginning.

This was basically the first Metalcore record I got into. Back in the days I was quite hooked by the combination of metal riffs, clean vocals, and screams. The old singer had quite a vocal range, from deep grunts to high pitched screams. This set the style for a lot of bands doing the "Killswitch Engage thing". Still a decent record, but today I prefer different bands from the genre.

Definatly my favorite band at the moment. love all their albums espically the end of heartache and alive or just breathing. Howard Jones is definatly one of the top vocalist in metal in my opinion.

Low 8 out of 10: Killswitch Engage's sophomore LP really took all the elements of their debut and twerked them to be even better. Each good moment became great, and most of the eh moments became good at the very least. Such a shame that Jesse would take a leave after this LP.

One of the most influential albums for metal in the early 2000's. Basically a release that has been aped by practically every bland metalcore band that followed...all of them falling short of the original. Alive or Just Breathing strikes the perfect middle ground between amazing catchy song writing and undeniably hardcore infused instrumentation. Best songs: Just Barely Breathing, Life to the Lifeless, and Fixation on the Darkness

Found AOJB when going through my stuff, and remembered why I fell in love with it in the first place. This was the first metal album I ever got, and was a good place to start. Jesse's lyricism along with the fact each song is distinct but none are really weak and throw the album off cement this as a 5 in my mind, it's very high on the list for me.

The clean vox and the frequent, chugging bro-downs take away from the experience somewhat. But all musical snobbery aside, you have to be fairly soulless not to enjoy this stuff. This is really tight and catchy. And I'll be honest, a few of those bro-downs did get me awkwardly headbanging with headphones on, alone in my room at 2AM. Hey, I'm not going to deny what is essentially a good bit of fun. Metal can groove, too.

"Alive Or Just Breathing" is where the wave of Metalcore began. The first epitaph of Metalcore and one of the best albums in the genre by one of the best bands in the genre. "The Element Of One", "Just Barely Breathing" and "Rise Inside" are three of ny favorite songs of all time.

Eleven years later, facing a fully matured KsE sound, this one isn't quite as epic as it was when it hit the scene. The musicianship isn't up to par with their later releases, but that is to be expected, as they were young. Still top 20 modern metal albums of all time. Just hasn't aged as well as many claim in my opinion.

A classic of the Metalcore scene, and metal in general. While it shows some weaknesses in terms of songwriting, the overall album is both brutal and beautiful, and shows the potential that metalcore used to have. My favorite tracks are probably "Numbered Days", "Self Revolution", and "The Element of One". A few of tracks in the middle of the album fall short of ideal.

What is referred to by a lot of people as the best Killswitch album. While I'm not 100% sold on that idea, I am 100% sure that this is one of my favourite metalcore albums ever (but then so are two of Killswitch's other albums). I loved Jesse on this album and am glad he's back with KSE. Also loved him on Times of Grace!

The style that so many bands at the moment are copying was basically invented by Killswitch engage. This is a perfect album from start to finish. Breakdowns are employed tastefully, the songs are great and Jesse Leach is possibly the best vocalist in modern metal

Jesses last album with the band. This was a great way to leave his part in the band behind. Self revolution has Amazing freaking lyrics. As does all the songs. the guitar is obvously great. My last serenade was a great song as was Rise inside and element of one. These songs were prolly the three that stood out the most for me on this album. Making Great messages and songs. Their guitar Awesome their Vocalist (as is howard) Awesome lyrics awesome Drums Awesome oh forget it its all awesome Great job killswitch and great way to end it Jesse, you will be missed.

This is Killswitch Engage's finest work and the reason for that is that AOJB doesn't sound like every Metalcore band out there like TEOH or ADD sound like. To sum it up the most innovative Metalcore record ever. And the most important thing about this album is Jesse David Leach. This man is just GOD. He sings/screams/growls with so much emotion that every single tone of his voice knocks me down on my ass. It's truly amazing.
