2.0 poor | Xenophanes EMERITUS | September 8th 17 | Stunning. Jaw to the floor. Absolutely in awe of how fucking boring this band is. If I had known that a beard and a
baritone could make so many guys this wet then I probably would have had a more interesting college
experience.

3.5 great | BigHans | August 23rd 17 | The National made Sleep Well Beast at Long Pond, and you can see the studio on the album cover, a black pyramid set against a gray sky with the band visible inside of a square window. Ultimately, I ended up talking to 80 percent of The National, drummer Bryan Devendorf was already in the pond, opting to spend a muggy July day swimming rather than doing an interview. r** Sounds like Devendorf is kind of a dick

4.0 excellent | Lucman | December 5th 17 | After months of listening it dawned on me that Sleep Well Beast may just be The National's second rbest album, sitting comfortably below Trouble Will Find Me. May even make the second slot on my ryear-end list.

4.5 superb | JesusCage | November 27th 17 | And they did it again, another classic. I was afraid they might turn down a notch quality wise this time, or just make the same album again (which wouldn't be too bad), but they managed to maintain their level while adding something new in the mix.. well done sirs.r(5)

4.4 superb | Benjamin Kuettel EMERITUS | September 3rd 17 | A masterful departure from recent predecessors, The National enter a new era of their sound with further musical experimentation. Some moments recall Alligator, others Radiohead even. Everything falls into place masterfully, being the best album of the year. "The System Dreams...," "Guilty Party," "I Will Destroy You," and the final two tracks are highlights.

2.5 average | Introu1 | May 17th 21 | Its long, the song arent bad, they're jsut average, and the majority of them are really forgetful, at least not turtleneck or The system only... Its sound a bit like if The Strokes got depressed and decided to make an album. Anyway its not bad for an album and i really see why people could enjoy this, but its not my cup of tea.

4.5 superb | charlopiano | March 13th 21 | I had only listened to Boxer before this one and I loved it. And it baffled me how I loved Sleep Well Beast even more. The adding of electronic elements added a whole new dimension to their song. I'll Still Destroy You Someday is such a master piece. Holy fuck
Bump |
4.0 excellent | olisz | December 12th 19 | Great and much needed stylistic change for The National. This album feels different due to a slightly more electronic sound. This sound is mostly cohesive through the album and has a great recognition value. The songs feature good songwriting and also often catchy lyrics, like the repeating theme "I'll still destroy you", which can be probably interpreted in many different ways. Some tracks in the middle of the tracklisting don't impress me too much, but there is plenty other satisfying material on here. For example "The system only dreams in total darkness" is a highlight, expecially when played live. This track also serves as an example of the superb production on this record.
Bump |
3.5 great | Malcontent | August 16th 19 | With the exception of a handful of standouts such as "Day I Die", "Empire Line", and "Nobody Else Will Be There" this album does not stick with the listener the same as prior records. The electronic elements don't noticeably improve or change their sound, and the songwriting, while solid, lacks the stunning ennui of prior records.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | GoldenGuy444 | October 8th 18 | A dark depressing brooding effort by the critically acclaimed group. Some highlights include the sharp "Turtleneck" , the depressing "Nobody Else Will Be There", and the hard hitting "The System Dreams in Total Darkness"

4.0 excellent | TheSupernatural | December 14th 17 | Can't help but feel like this is a slight misstep. The National needed to play around with their sound, but Sleep Well Beast feels like a transition rather than a completion. The songs with more electronic elements don't grab me at all, but there's still a few classic tracks on here that make it worthwhile listen regardless.

4.5 superb | notkanyewest | September 13th 17 | I'm just finishing up my first month of law school, and this is probably going to be of my 3 or so favorite albums to be released this year. I'm well on my way to being a miserable middle aged white guy! ("Nobody Else Will Be There", literally the whole run of "I'll Still Destroy You" through the end)
Bump |
5.0 classic | 3waycrash | September 9th 17 | The National have always played music about the sort of "everyday" man. It has proved to be successful over the course of a number of albums, but eventually something had to change in their sound to keep things from being stale. Sleep Well Beast is a refresher that revitalizes and also pushes The National forward. Things are still essentially the same (in a good way), but there's just enough new to mix in to keep things fresh. From the pristine production to the more electronic textures, it feels like the logical next step for the band, but also like it could compare to some of their best material. Thematically the album deals with the usual topics to be found on a National album, done in the way they do it best: ever so subtle. "It feels like we're in this period where there's a tendency to just want to hibernate when things get really weird. It's an escape to try to sleep through it, but the beast for me isn't a negative thing: it's the future. We've all got kids, and when I see all of our kids? They've got a challenge ahead of them, but I feel positive about the future." This sentiment can be felt especially with the numerous current predicaments faced in the modern day world. Sleep Well Beast is about the tendency to want to sleep or disconnect ourselves when the unthinkable happens, but to choose now, despite those feelings, to be awake. This is just as relevant today more than ever. With Sleep Well Beast, The National continue their string of fantastic albums and continue to prove to be one of the most important modern bands being as classy as ever.
