Arena rock that will never go to the arenas. Shame they didn't make this kind of music in the 90s: it's introspective, extremely melodic, it's got the stringz (even though they do sound cheesy at times), it's heavy-but-not-too-heavy (the way "Deer" transforms into "Mighty"), even epic at times ("Pale Black Eyes"), and, most importantly, it's full of sing-along tunes. It takes some time to apprehend the album and truly understand it. It's gonna be overlooked in the coming years for sure, but this is one hell of an onion: just peel it for it to reveal itself.

Simple Math sees Manchester Orchestra taking it to the next level in their sound. From both the rocking moments to the quiet moments, Simple Math has it all. Sweeping and epic, it's their best work to date. (On a side note, this album will always be my graduation album)

Originally a 4. But that's the beauty of a superb album, it'll keep you coming back for
more. Every song on this album just pours emotion out of your headphones, with songs ranging
from heart pounding rock, to orchestral journeys to minimalist introspective numbers. Andy
Hull is one of the best lyricists I've had the pleasure of listening to, a must listen
record if I've ever heard one. My highlights are Apprehension, Pensacola, Simple Math and
Leave it Alone.

It seems that the new fad sweeping the nation is one of alt./Indie Rock (play Manchester Orchestra, Brand New, and From Indian Lakes consecutively and I'm sure 75% of people wouldn't be able to tell the difference) much like Nu-Metal did in the 90's. Thankfully, THIS genre is for the most part much more listenable. When you get down to it this is just that, one of your standard Alt./Indie Rock albums. Nothing on here that hasn't been done before, but in the whole scheme of things, it's a solid album from a band capable of just a bit more. 3.7/5

After putting the "rock" back in indie-rock, Manchester Orchestra return in majestic fashion on 'Simple Math'. An even fuller sound is evident here, with intricately layered arrangements being complemented by a strings ensemble & occasional horns. Both within songs & between them, the balance of vulnerable intimacy & tense power is expertly crafted, with Andy Hull's intensely captivating vocals begging to be crooned, & then screamed, along to. With only the closer approaching filler, this is another superb & consistent release from this prolific & evolving Atlantan quintet. Recommended Tracks: Mighty, Simple Math, Virgin, Pale Black Eye & Pensacola.

At the few first listens I really dug this album and this band. Little did i know that it would find its way into my cd player again, and again, and again. I cant stop listening to this album, you can put it in and let it ride (a'thank you) top 100 cds of all time for me.

I agree with many of the reviews of this album but offer a grain of salt: because of poor production choices (the drums *cough* *cough*) and short running time "Simple Math" isn't quite the classic I hoped for... but damn it's close and I love it all the same. Buy this thang.

at this point (5/3/11), ive listened to this 3 times. will be dissapointed if i have to move this down. the whole album is fantastic. i thought they would completley lose their souther rock influences but i was wrong. the title track might be more intimate than "i can feel a hot one". i didnt know that was possible. btw the kids in virgin. need i say more?FUCK
